I recommend visiting campuses and asking for tours of the Graphic Design program facilities. Ask the professors/students if they focus on any fine art skills in the intermediate stages of the program. They might also have this information on their websites to save you a trip. 

The school I went to had all of the fine art majors and graphic design majors take the same classes for the first two years and then the same electives for the next two years. So we were learning about the basics of graphic design for 5 semesters before we ever touched a computer and we continued painting/sculpting/etching/drawing/photographing into our final year, and I’m very thankful for that.

For the record, I went to a public university in Alabama called Auburn University and loved to program, my peers, and the professors a ton. (Off the record, the general student population was awful and made for a pretty shitty milieu.)

Aside from all of that, the best thing to do is practice. Buy and read books, watch videos, find people in real life who are doing what you want to do and ask for internships/apprenticeships. I’m happy I went to school and it has served me well, but figuring stuff out and practicing it all the time has been just as important for me.
