Bede's first instinct was to scoff at the compliment

❝ . . . What an odd thing to say . ❞

Yet , despite the dismissive tone , he couldn't quite bring himself to look away immediately . His gaze flickered elsewhere for a moment , a faint warmth creeping onto his face before he quickly composed himself .

❝ & why are you looking at me like that ? ❝ he muttered , smoothing a hand through his hair . " Anyone would think you were planning something . ❞

When the request came , Bede let out an exaggerated sigh .

❝ You've already decided I'm helping , haven't you ? ❞

His eyes narrowed , though there wasn't much bite behind it .

" thank you. had you not helped, might it have taken another century to make these rooms hospitable to the company of a new arrival. "

the chuckle was flat, even at the attempt at some form of humor. living another century felt like so little; by comparison to his over three thousand years. might he hope that such a curse never be placed upon another that did not deserve it.

pushing himself up, with a staggered huff escaping before standing up to half his full height.
