The Heritage Conservation Workshop organized by my alma mater UPVTC through UP Leyte Samar Heritage Center and supported by NCCA and DOT was relevant, riveting and refreshing. Prof. Eric Zerrudo of the UST-CCPET who is also the UNESCO National Commission Culture Commissioner gave participants a refreshing take and offered a different perspective to heritage as one of the fundamental pillars to sustainable development aimed at protecting, preserving and promoting our natural and cultural heritage. Riveting because what strike me the most was his statement that "Heritage conservation is not just about the study, but an action" because indeed, what is most important after learning all the theories, techniques and policies is on how these will translate to action, to taking concrete steps and proactively participate in the efforts to relearn and relive the past so as to improve the present and to ensure the continuity to the future. The activity was coincided with the 2017 National Heritage Month celebration and UP Tacloban's 44th Founding Anniversary dubbed as "Pagpadukwag han aton Kabilin" or "Enhancing our Heritage", which was geared towards heritage appreciation and activation of local leaders and key individuals to take part in the advocacy, a relevant concern that we must address. Heritage is more than old structures and antique collections, beyond the told stories and built memories. Our heritage defines who we were in the past, describes who we are at the present, and determines who we will be in future. Only be understanding that we start to value things; if we value, we tend to care for it; by caring for it, we learn to enjoy it; and once we enjoy it, we understand its meaning; and so the cycle of heritage continues.
