As the reality of Rey's situation settled in her mind, she sighed heavily and walked back to the horizontal bench on the wall at the back of the classroom. It was stretched between two standing cabinets, but was just long enough for Rey's small body. She dropped her backpack on the floor and laid down with her back on the bench, but when she did she covered her face with her hands. This wasn't what she needed today.
What she hadn't seen was Kylo watching her back as she walked. When she covered her face with her hands, his chest squeezed tight. She can't think it's that horrible, being in here with him. Then again she obviously does if she's reacting this way. The thought hurts his feelings a little as he tries to think of something to say. "They'll be back in a couple of hours. It's not like we're trapped in here forever." That had been what he'd settled on. Maybe giving her a light at the end of the tunnel would help.
"I...I know." She said without moving her hands from her face. "Professor Snoke has another lab this morning right?" "Yes, he does", Kylo replied. "But it's from 11 to 1 in another lab. It's on the opposite side of the building." "That's great! So we're stuck in here for at least 2 hours", Rey seethed. "Probably but Snoke or Hux will be back to prep the lab for the next class by then", Kylo supplied. If Rey didn't know any better, she'd think he was trying to lighten her mood a little. When Rey didn't respond, she heard Kylo shifting awkwardly on his feet. He finally decided to sit back down at the lab bench closest to the back of the room and the door. Rey could hear him zip open his backpack and reach in to pull out his laptop. When she heard him start typing, she sighed. She peeked at his form, his back, long hair, and broad shoulders, through her fingers before she decided to get up and do the same. He had the right idea- start working on the final lab report. That would kill time.
When she sat up, turned, and stood to get off the bench with a groan, Kylo froze and partially closed his laptop. That was weird. "Relax", she said. "I wasn't going to look at your laptop. I was just thinking that I should work on my lab report too." With that, she walked to the opposite end of the lab bench he was at and pulled out her laptop. As she began typing, he slowly set his screen back upright and continued his work. She was focusing on the wording of her intro when he suddenly broke the silence.
"Rey", he said, before he turned to look at her. She looked up, confused, because she was sure that was the first time he'd ever said her name in a sincere tone. "What?" She hadn't meant for it to sound so snippy, but she really couldn't help it around this guy. "Is there anyone else who knows you're here? Will they come looking for you?" Rey paused briefly.
"Why would you ask me that when we're alone in here and you know the answer? That sounds like a question someone asks another person before they murder them." Rey was surprised when Kylo laughed at this, a low rumble in his chest. The sound was astonishingly pleasant to Rey's ears and she could feel herself smiling. Damnit. "I was just trying to think of other solutions." He held up his hands in mock surrender.
"I'm sorry", she found herself saying. She looked down and brought her hands to her lap, lacing her fingers in and out repeatedly. "I don't mean to be so snappy." He was trying to help for once. He was stuck in here too. It's also not his fault that she has exactly three friends who were all in class at the moment. "Can I ask you a question?" His tone was cautious. She didn't know what he would ask her next but she looked up and nodded her head slightly. "You've acted like I'm the last person on this planet that you'd want to be stuck in here with. Why?"
His words felt like a slap in the face. Her mouth dropped open at his question. She spoke without thinking. "Because you are." She saw him flinch back a bit but she didn't care. How dare he ask her that? After the way he's always treated her. Rey felt her temper flaring as she struggled not to speak through clenched teeth. "You've acted like you hate me since the first day I got here. You mock me in front of your friends. Believe it or not, you're not my favorite person."
The silence stretched between them then. They continued studying each other, as if they could analyze what the other was thinking. After what felt like an eternity, he broke the silence again. "I understand why you feel that way. I deserve it." Rey couldn't believe what she was hearing. She scrunched her brow, thinking that he must be trying to poke fun at her. But then he continued. "I would just like to explain, if I may. I had no friends when I came here either. A few guys were talking about some girl in the library one day and I joined in. You walked past us and they laughed; that's when I realized they were talking about you. I recognized you from move-in day and I'd been not-so-friendly to you then. I figured it would be easy enough to keep up the charade. But that was before I realized how similar we are."
If Rey could scrunch her brow any deeper, she was doing it now. She continued to look at him, dumbfounded, until he resumed talking. "I think we both came here to start over. And to let the past die."
Rey was confused to say the least. "Kylo", she said, shaking her head and putting her hand up for him to stop talking because she wasn't sure what he was going on about. He huffed a breath at that. "It's Ben." She stopped shaking her head and locked eyes with him again. "What did you say?", she asked incredulously. He cleared his throat, clearly feeling the pressure of her gaze now. "My birth name is Ben Solo. I had it legally changed to Kylo Ren a few years ago, when I had the falling out with my family."
Rey felt the color drain from her face and let her hand fall on the tabletop. She suddenly struggled to speak. "You- you're Ben Solo? The "Lost" Son of the Solo family?" She made air quotation marks with her fingers as she said the word lost. Kylo chuckled again. "I guess you could say that. But there's not much left of Ben Solo anymore." "I don't believe that", she countered quickly. She didn't know what she was saying. Apparently nothing that she thought she knew about this guy was correct.
