Her hands clutch the Styrofoam cup as if it were an anchor, a feeble attempt at steadying it from her bouncing leg. Because that she couldnāt work on right now, trying to still muddled thoughts and pounding head, nervousness and worry and shame written on delicate features. She didnāt know if she should be here.
The smell of cheap instant coffee filled the air, and she hissed as said cheap instant coffee spilled over the brim of the cup she was holding, thin and watered down, but caffeinated; an attempt at normalcy. In the corner, near a folding table stacked with brochures and pamphlets, and the little name tags that you got at the muggle markets, was a large sign that saidWerewolves Welcome. A small, wizened woman with scars across her face sat there next to a stiff Ministry official, a man who looked as if heād rather be anywhere else.
This is the first place theyād told her to go when sheād gone to the Ministry to register ā a mandatory support and anger management group, a small step in the direction of progress towards werewolf acceptance. She hadnāt felt very accepted when the witch had slipped her the card, a look of disgust mixed with fear in her eyes.
She supposed sheād have to get used to that ā the redhead was fresh off her first full moon, all aching muscles and new wounds. More scars to add to he collection; she wondered briefly if these would eclipse her brand.
This was not much of a job, but it was something. Remus had been doing this for years. heād been going to every meeting since graduating Hogwarts. Four times a year, werewolves of the UK and IrelandĀ gathered in this utterly normal space. It was laughable really. This room was so normal. The reason for the meeting was not.Ā
In truth this was just part of his job. He was supposed to travel around, checking on the other werewolves and making sure they were safe (they were okay). With the rise of You-Know-Who it was a dangerous time. Some pureblooded wizards, not in league with You-Know-Who, did not like the different (and werewolves were definitely different). Some werewolves were tired of being treated like second-class citizens and were actually joining You-Know-Who.Ā
So yeah, Remusās job included stopping more from joining ranks. What a laugh. He found, in most cases, werewolves did what they wanted to do. For Remus the patrols (no matter what there were for) were unsettling. It felt like he was spying on them. He felt like he was a pawn chosen to keep control. These meetings, too, seemed like a means to keep control. At the very least they were a means to keep tabs on UK and Irelandās werewolf population.Ā
Normally nothing new happened at these meetings. Very rarely did anyone new come (maybe a one or two each time). But this meeting was different for two reasons. One, a dozen new ones came; that happened last time too. The increase was unsettling. Two, the last to arrive was a familiar face from long ago.Ā
He left Fiona to her business. She didnāt like these meetings any more than he did. The difference between the two of them was that she wasnāt good at hiding her disgust at attending. Joining Lily, he sat down and pulled a packet of hot cocoa powder.Ā āIt makes the coffee taste better,ā he offered with a wry smile.Ā āChocolate helps....ā He didnāt quite know how to say it, so he gestured to himself.Ā
āForgive Fiona over there. Sheās just.... what you see. Not too happy about her lot. Pureblood from old money. Slytherin to boot, but not the worst. She makes the best toad in the hole that youāve ever eaten,ā he said.Ā āIām Remus Lupin. Go ahead and laugh. I donāt know why my father thought giving me a name that means Wolf Wolf was a good idea. Forgive me for rambling. I happen to recognize you. I canāt place it.āĀ
