Unmanaged hosting is cheaper because there’s no management – i.e. no routine support. The host will replace failed components, reboot servers, maintain the network and keep the lights on, but it won’t support any software or install anything for you. It’s effectively your computer to maintain and control. You install security patches, you fix weird error messages and you’re responsible for installing everything but the OS. Many hosts won’t even provide a control panel or web server software: it’s up to you to do that.

Unmanaged hosting gives you complete control: sole access and total freedom, just as though your server were your own computer. Unmanaged services are significantly cheaper than managed services, so if you’re comfortable with your OS, it’s a no briner.

An unmanaged dedicated server is the complete opposite of a managed dedicated server. Unmanaged dedicated servers are cheaper where your hosting provider will install everything and leave the maintenance to you. Although you have key access to your server and have the liberty to configure, when you are faced with issues such as reconfigurations and upgrades, your provider will not be there to assist you. If you decide to call on IT support from your provider, you may need to pay fees.

Get an unmanaged dedicated server if:

You do not have the budget to avail a fully managed hosting plan.

You have the technical expertise or you have an IT department that is experienced in server management.

You have the time for server maintenance and like the idea of having the freedom for configurations.

Before settling on which dedicated server type is right for your business, take the time to evaluate your needs first. Does your business needs more security and support when it comes to server administration? Are you looking for affordable dedicated servers? Do you have the IT personnel to help you maintain your server? Do you see yourself as tech-savvy enough to take on an unmanaged plan by yourself?
