One week ago, the world witnessed yet another terrorist attack in Paris. People around the world have been using the hashtag #JeSuisCharlie, which in English translate to I am Charlie, to show their support for the cartoon, Charlie Hebdo.Β
The video above posted by the Associated Press shows the millions of people rallying together, all holding up signs that say that Je Suis Charlie and even chanting Charlieβs name.
CNN reportedβ http://money.cnn.com/2015/01/09/technology/social/jesuischarlie-hashtag-twitter/ β At itβs peak last Thursday evening, there were close to 6,500 tweets per minute with the hashtag. As of late last Friday there have been more than 5 million tweets with the hashtag #JeSuisCharlie just in a time span on 2 days. The BBC reported that within the last week, #JeSuis Charlie has been tweeted around 7 million times. http://www.bbc.com/news/blogs-trending-30797059
Twitter reported that they are compiling a list of the most popular news hashtags although #JeSuisCharlie is close to reaching the top of the list, it has not reached number one yet.Β
Although the hashtag has not reached number one on Twitter, the hashtag is being used on other social media sites. Mark Zuckerberg, one of the co-founders of Facebook, used the #JeSuisCharlie hashtag on Facebook condemning those attacks. Also, SnapChat, a social media application, complied a story using images and videos that incorporated the hashtag.Β
http://mashable.com/2015/01/09/jesuischarlie-hashtag-popularity/
Mashable posted a video time lapse on January 7th, 2015 of how popular the hashtag was growing through the world. As the time lapse increases, so does the use of the hashtag.Β
On Sunday, January 11th, 2015, 50 of the worlds leaders gathered together in Paris for a unity rally to remember the victims and come together as one. A reported 3.7 million people crowded together at the unity rally and held up flags from all different countries but one thing they all shared in common was holding up signs that said #JeSuisCharlie.Β
On Sunday, I was able to watch the unity rally live on Foxs news on television, it was amazing to see thousands of people from all different nations come together and stand as one. Although #JeSuisCharlie did not break the number one record for the most recorded hashtag, it shows how effective social media is when everyone from around the world is talking about the same topic.
On Sunday night, several celebrities at the Golden Globes showed their support for Charlie Hebdo by bringing signs, wearing buttons or even flashing their phone cases that all showed βJe Suis Charlieβ on them. These celebrities include Diane Kruger and Joshua Jackson, George and Amal Clooney, Helen Mirren, Kathy Bates, and Alexandre Desplat.Β
#JeSuis Charlie has spread internationally and I think it great that celebrities are able to raise awareness about it. Do you think that by celebrities and people holding up signs that say Je Suis Charlie, it is helping the hashtag become more effective on social media?Β
