When writing the adaptation - looking back at the structure that Vladimir Propp set out for fairytales and the characters it was much easier to write the adaptation in such small amount of words. just making a synopsis of :
the beginning -introducing the 'hero',
middle - having the action
end - the resolution.Ā
I did go against some of his theories though, creating the illusion of a villain and actually not having the monster be bad. This was more inspired through the Hotel Transylvania having the fear be what is the villain and cloud judgement. But show the reader this is the illusion and have it lifted to so the true person that the character is.Ā
Looking back at Frankenweenie and comparing it more to Hotel Transylvania. Frankenweenie is almost a modern replica of Frankenstein - though the sympathy for the monster and the understanding of humanity from the Victor character is actually there. this is to put across the themes in a way that is easier for children to digest. Having Victor love his creation makes the viewer go on the journey of wanting everyone else to accept and love what is different.Ā
Very similar to Hotel Transylvania, Frankenweenie has a happy resolution - giving the children the answer of what makes you human is the ability to accept what is different and don't create without love.Ā
Frankenweenie does the illusion of presenting the factors of a horror - black and white film/ monsters/ dark shadows and monsters etc when it actually isn't. It is simply family film - which is why it has a lot of comedy (The creepy looking characters saying/doing the most funny things) and ends with a happy resolution.Ā
Adaption - based upon Frankenstein
A young boy called Victor put down his monster book and headed to bed. Snuggling under his covers he quickly fell asleep dreaming of the monsters heād read in his book and of his fighting and defeating them. The clock soon passed midnight and Victor was awoken by a noise. Peering round he was unable to see anything in the dark, with a trembling hand he snatched up the torch by his bedside and flicked it on. Two giant blue eyes stared at him from the end of his bed. With a scream he dived under his quilt crying for his mother. When she arrived the eyes had vanished. The next night Victor shook in his bed, scared the eyes would return. Keeping his nightlight on his mother kissed him on the forehead and bid him goodnight. Hours passed before Victor began to nod off. But again he was awoken by a noise. āPlease donāt screamā said a voice. āI donāt like it when people screamā āWhat are you?ā The boy bravely whispered back. āIām your monster, iām the one you dreamt of. Though iād rather you didnāt hurt meā āBut youāre a monster?ā āDoesnāt mean Iām bad. I simply want a friend. Iād hoped youād be my friendā Victor, too scared to see the monster agreed to talk with the monster if he promised to stay under the bed. Weeks past and the boy and monster became good friends. Slowly Victor grew braver. They would play checkers , a fluffy pink claw would pop out from the darkness causing the boy to hold his breathe everytime it did. More time passed before finally the boy and monster played checkers on his bed both out from the darkness. Playing happily as friends.
