âč Erratic, volatile mood swings: one minute, they're all smiles and the next, they're expressionless, and no one can quite predict which will happen when.
âč Lacks comprehension of basic, human morals: they don't quite understand why they should care because it has nothing to do with them, no? Sometimes, harming people is necessary.
âč Experiences cautiousness from even the most trusting characters: when the kindest, most open, and most trusting characters are wary of them, that's how you know it's bad.
âč Self-Centeredness: they treat others as tools to gain what they want because that's what matters most.
âč Inappropriate behavior and reactions: do they feel the need to laugh when a someone is hurt? Do they enjoy purposely provoking people to get reactions?
âč Impulsive, reckless actions: they do what they want when they want, regardless of what others might think.
âč They don't care: they don't care what society believes. They don't care what their friends or family wants. The only person they care about is themselves, which can develop into a lack of empathy.
A/N: Please don't take this too seriously; as the title suggests, this is simply for story-writing fun. Just because someone has one or two of these characteristics doesn't make them "unhinged"; there are many other outside factors to also take into consideration. Still, I hope this has helped and/or inspired you all!

âCount slowly and clearly,â the womanâs voice rang out. Every day a new person demanded something of the girls. Two armed men stood behind the woman. Their arms were raised and ready for the slightest change of demeanor in the girls. It was as if they feared the kids. The same kids were bound and chained to the broken heater in the withering room.Â
âOnetwothreefourââ the youngest of the two girls answered. She picked away at the dirt underneath her nail beds. The tiny clumps of dirt always seemed to reappear no matter how many times she scraped them away.Â
âEllie. Stand up. Slowly. And clearly.â The woman repeated. Her thumb brushed over the pen in her hand. A faint sound of clicking filled the air. The mundane noise plucked the strings of annoyance in the young girl's brain.Â
The older of the two girls stuck out a leg, kicking her sister. Ellie whipped her head in her sisterâs direction. Her eyes were wide and accusing as she gasped feigning hurt and betrayal. However, the glare in her sisterâs eyes overpowered the young girlâs determination of perpetual annoyance.Â
âFine,â Ellie grumbled. âOne. Two. Three.â Ellieâs voice enunciated each syllable with perfect pronunciation. To some, it may have seemed as if Ellie was behaving, but her sister knew better. The wide eyes, the over-exaggerated inflections, the spit flying from her mouth with each consonant, and her fingers that were clenched tightly into fists. They were all signs of the young girlâs defiance.Â
âFour. Five. Six. Seven. EightâŠ,â Ellieâs eyes now stared right into the womanâs soul. She saw how the womanâs grip around her pen tightened, earning a smile from Ellie. â...Fuck.You.âÂ
The woman rolled her eyes and mumbled something along the lines of âjackass kid.âÂ
âNow, hold out yourââ the woman instructed. Her eyes darted up from her clipboard and looked right at Ellie.Â
The young girl stood tall. Her arm extended out. The muscles were still and controlled. Exactly what the woman had asked of her. Ellieâs grin grew wider as the womanâs eyes fell on the long finger pointed straight towards the sky. The girlâs sister couldnât help but chuckle at the sight.Â
âState your name. Slowly.â The woman added. The tone of annoyance had grown apparent.Â
Ellie lowered her arm and brought a finger up to tap her chin. Her eyes playfully darted side to side. âSir Theobald Buster Himen.â
The womanâs frantic scribbling stopped as look at the name she had jotted down. She harshly scratched it out and glared at Ellie once again. In turn, Ellie flashed an innocent smile. Her hands extended and palms facing that dayâs chosen inspector showed that she meant no harm.Â
âJesus!â Ellie exclaimed. âCanât take a joke. Itâs Ellie. Same as yesterday. And the day before. And theââ
âYou.â The woman pointed to Ellieâs sister.Â
The teen stood up from her seat on the splintery hardwood floor with a groan. She stuck her arm out and counted from one to ten. No clever tricks or attempts for a reaction.Â
âMy nameâs Piper Willaims. SeventeenâŠâ She looked at the woman. âAnything else?â
The woman clicked her pen and vacated the room. The clipboard hugged tightly to her side as if it were the most precious thing in the world. It very well could be if what they suspected about the girls was true.Â
One of the two armed men stepped forwards and picked up the empty food tray. His gun raised with each step he took closer to the two girls. What were they going to do? Bite him? thought Piper. Within the blink of an eye, the door was shut with a slam. Ellie and Piper stood behind the locked door. Their wrists were chained to the wall. The only hope for escape was the cracked window in the corner of the room.Â
âHey!â Ellie shouted. âPeople are gonna come looking for me and my sister. People from FEDRA,â she emphasized. âYou hear me? Let us out or youâre gonna pay, motherfuckers!âÂ
âEllie,â Piper said. Her hand laid against her sisterâs shoulder giving it a squeeze.Â
Ellie shoved the hand away and grumbled. âWhat happened to Miss Ann Al?!â
Piper rolled her eyes and slumped against the wall behind her. Her body slid to the floor. Her free hands scratched away at the already peeling green wallpaper in the room. âEllieâŠâ she began.
âNo, donât give me this âEllieâ bullshit.âÂ
âI just wanted it over with,â Piper confessed. She buried her head between her legs. âJust accept that weâre stuck here. No oneâs coming Els.â
Ellieâs shoulder dropped. âThatâs not fucking true. Weâre not supposed to be here!â She cried. Her hands flew up to grab at her messy hair. Her grip threatened to yank out the wavy brown locks. âIâŠI.âÂ
A tightness formed in Ellieâs chest and spread to her throat, her heart, and even her fucking lungs. Piper shot up from her seat and scurried to her sister. âHey, hey, EllieâŠcome onââÂ
Ellie had turned to look at her sister. A sight that disassembled Piperâs heart piece by piece. The fragile pieces threaten to fall to the floor and shatter the last of her resolve. Piper scrambled to pick up the pieces as she held her sister close. Her arms coiled around Ellieâher baby sister.Â
A shudder ran through Ellieâs body turning her legs numb. âShhhâŠâ Piper comforted as she held the weight of her sister's limp figure. Slowly, Piperâs legs bent at the knee and lowered inch by inch to the wooden floor. The splintered surface was their only hope of refuge.Â
An instinct, that Ellieâs body couldn't help but cave into, brought Piper even closer until they shared one breath and one wild heartbeat. Ellie leaned even nearer into the shield Piperâs body formed; a shield that hid Ellie from the monsters of the world and the fears that plagued her mind. Ellie submerged her dirtied face into the shirt covering her sisterâs chest. It was gray but looked more like a shade that was a tad lighter than black. It smelt of death: the rancid smell of rotten mushrooms, dirt, the blend of copper and iron, and smoke. Ellieâs body trembled against Piper. The tears that stained Piperâs shirt were the closest thing it had gotten to being washed.Â
Piper leaned her back against the wall. Her arms enveloped Ellie. Her mouth whispered words of comfort to her sister. A hand measled its way up and began to brush softly through Ellieâs earth-colored hair. As her fingers tangled with the strands, the brown shade merged with the red and gold highlights bringing Piper home. A home that the two of them shared in their hearts, minds, and souls. Ellieâs hair was growing long. Piper glanced around the room, hoping to find something that could be used to cut it before catching her error in thought. They, the people keeping them here, wouldnât leave them in a room with potential tools of escape. Piper would have to find something else to keep her and her sister busy and distracted from their current situation.Â
The sun had begun its descent in the sky. It was the only thing, despite the daily check-in, that was consistent for the two girls. The food and water would come and go. Some days theyâd only get a meal. Others theyâd have three. Sometimes a rodent friend would come to visit and on other days, Piper and Ellie would only have each other to keep company.Â
The golden light flooded the opposite side of the room. Its empty warmth taunted them, only letting the girls imagine. Imagine what itâd be like to feel the fading heat that the light of the world provided. White spray-painted letters flashed across the room. The sunset presented the words with center stage. âWhen youâre lost in the darkâŠlook to the light.â Piper scoffed.Â
There, she sat in the shadow of the room. Her sister was concealed in her arms. Piperâs dark brown eyes looked at the light and were disgusted. Her stomach turned and her throat was caught in a chokehold. The hope, the lies that the message delivered. It wasnât true. The words spewed from the terrorist organization. The one that sought for peaceâfor a cure. The crumbling foundation of hypocrisy. Hope was ignorance and ignorance was blind. Blindness to the fucked-up world outside the walls of Piperâs prison.
Sheâd already lost too many people to the blindness. A tear snuck down her cheek. The tear tracks washed away the dried blood, soil, and grime, and with it came the memories. The memories of the people sheâs lost to the blindness.Â
ê§_____________ê§
There was something about the smell of cotton sheets that eased even the greatest of nerves present in Piperâs body. The smell was faint; as it would be if the sheet were over two decades old. She was lying in the bottom bunk. Of course, Ellie got the top. The metal bed above Piper creaked and groaned as her sister twisted and turned. An attempt to settle her mind.Â
It wasnât much: the room, a roof over their heads, a bed to sleep in, and safety from the world outside the walls. In fact, Piper might have even indulged in the necessities they were provided if it hadnât been for the price. It all came with the promise of their futures. Piper had already signed hers away earlier than the rest of the kids did in the FEDRA Preparatory School. FEDRA states that kids arenât old enough to âserveâ or become âdogsâ until their eighteen years of age. That rule, strictly enforced, didnât apply to Piper. Why would it when she showed potential others didnât reveal until they were shot and buried six feet under? To FEDRA it was simple, the girl could shoot and shoot well. Nine times out of ten sheâd hit her target. Piper was also tall and thin. Her arms could reach high places, but her figure was small enough to easily avoid attacks and enemy fire. In FEDRAâs eyes, she was fucking perfect, so they bypassed the law and put her to work. A twelve-year-old girl in a war of men.Â
However, since she was still a kid. Piper went to school. Sheâd learned science, math, and whatever bullshit the teachers wanted to spew at her. It was all propaganda to break the will of the young to fight back, to want more. FEDRA was the only option and they made sure of it. But the clock was ticking. What seemed years away, was now only a year. A year until she turned eighteen. A year until FEDRA could have her do anything they wanted. No more school. No more smell of cotton sheets. No more Ellie. To make matters worse, Ellie knew. There was no hiding it from her sister.Â
Piper closed her eyes. The rustling from above had stopped. Maybe Ellie had fallen asleep. A groan fell from the sky. Never mind. The springs of the mattress above screeched out.Â
âPsshh. Pipes,â Ellie whispered. Although it was more like a loud hiss.Â
âPipes.âÂ
Piper remained silent. Her eyes were adamant about getting some shut-eye. Something sheâd not be getting on the shift that night.Â
Piperâs eyes pried open. âJesus, Ellie! What?! Iâm trying to get some sleep.â
Ellieâs head was dangling off the edge of the bed. Her hair fell down to the ground with the force of gravity. It seemed like the blood in her body was doing the sameârushing to her head. âThatâs a load of infected shit and you know it,â Ellie chuckled, catching her sister in the lie. Ellie grunted and swung her legs around. Her feet were now planted firmly on the floor with her hands on her hips as Ellie stared down at her sister.Â
âHowââÂ
âYou can never sleep when you have a guard shift at night.â Ellie clutched at her chest right where she thought her heart would be. âFourteen years, Iâve been by your side. What am I? Chopped liver?âÂ
Piper sat up and, in an instant, reached out to her sister and yanked her down on the bed. Ellie let out a scream at the sudden movement. The young girlâs arms flailed around in an attempt to gain some control. Ellieâs hand latched onto the bottom of Piperâs jacket and flipped it forward, covering Piperâs face. Piper chuckled at her sisterâs distraction. Her hold on Ellie only tightened as her legs wrapped around her younger sister.Â
âNo, no, noâŠnot the legs,â Ellie heaved. âItâs not...fair.â Her breath was heavy as she squirmed in her sisterâs hold. Ellie kicked up her legs to push Piper back but only secured her trapped position.Â
âGive?â Piper asked. Her voice was slightly strained from the playful struggle.Â
âJesus, flying fuck!â Ellie cursed. She took a free hand and slapped Piperâs shoulder. âI give. I give. I give. I givââÂ
A sigh escaped Ellieâs mouth as her lungs relished in the ability to breathe without some restriction. She craned her neck side to side with a satisfying pop sound soon to follow. Ellie flexed her arms, shaking them. âHowâhow do you win every single time? Itâs like youâve got superpowers or something.â
âCome on Ellie. Seventeen years. Three years longer on this miserable planet than you. Just enough time to finesse my superb skills,â Piper brought her fingers to her lips and performed what was called a âchefâs kissâ. Ellie groaned and Piper could practically hear her sisterâs eyes roll into the back of her head. âYou love me.âÂ
âDo I?â Ellie asked. Piper smirked. âYeah, I do,â Ellie said. Her voice had grown soft.Â
Piper knew that tone. âWhatâre you thinking of?âÂ
âHuh?â Ellie responded.Â
âYouâre thinking,â Piper noted. âA dangerous thing, by the way.â
Ellie shrugged her shoulders. âJust tired I guess.â
Piper raised her brow comically high. âEllie? Tired? I thought Iâd never live to see the day.âÂ
âFuck off,â Ellie said as she shoved her sisterâs shoulder. Without another word, Ellie stepped onto the lower bed and pushed herself up and onto the top bunk. There was a shuffle and a deep sigh before Ellie lay still.Â
Piper sat in her bed. Her ears tuned into Ellieâs breathing like a stereo. The inhales and exhales served as a metronome to try and lull Piper to sleep. Ellie was right. Piper could never sleep when she had the night shift, so instead, she thought. Something Piper was good at. Her eyes peered over to the window. There were a few clouds in the distance, Piper noted. Although not enough for rain. Sheâd be saved from another soggy socks evening. Even without the rain, there'd be other things to look out for: Raiders, infected, those out after curfew. She thought of the possible bribes sheâd received to spare a life. Her backpack and a few other survival tools were amongst those bribes. Then her mind recalled the feeling of loading, aiming, and shooting a gun. The feeling of the trigger underneath her finger. A weapon of potential destruction in the hands of a child. Piper shook her head. She wasnât a child anymore. She hadnât been for a long time, not since the night FEDRA decided she was old enough to venture into the world. She rolled onto her side. At least she could offer Ellie the childhood she never got. A silent tear rolled down Piperâs cheek. The salty taste entered her mouth. Sheâd see the world burn before they touched Ellie. That spark, that fiery innocence in her sister was her hope and light and Piper would do anything to see it thrive.Â
ê§_____________ê§
Ellie had fallen asleep by some miracle. It was deep and restful. She didnât even hear Piper get up for her shift on guard. A true miracle indeed.Â
However, what wasnât a miracle was how she woke up. There was a snarl and a few clicks before Ellie registered a weight on top of her.Â
âRaaa!â A voice growled at her.Â
Ellie screamed and shoved the figure on top off and toppled to the floor. Whoever it was landed on the floor with a groan. Not that Ellie cared. Her hand already gripped tightly around the switchblade Piper had gotten for her.Â
âRiley?â Ellie croaked. Her voice was sore from the sudden awakening.Â
âOw,â Riley groaned. Her hand rubbed her hip. âI landed on my hip.âÂ
Riley stood up just as Ellie hopped down from her bunk. Her brown eyes caught sight of Piperâs empty bed.Â
âWhat the hell? I thought you were an infected,â Ellie said.Â
Riley smirked. âI know. It was kind of awesome.â Her eyes fell on the knife in Ellieâs hands. âWell, youâre not gonna kill me, are you?â
Ellieâs eyes widened and she quickly shoved the knife under Piperâs pillow. âI havenât seen you inâŠI donât even know how long.âÂ
âForty-five days. Well, forty-sixâŠtechnically,â Riley clarified. Her smiley persona faltered for a moment as she took notice of the vacant bed. âWhereâs Piper?â
Ellie looked back at the bed, âUhâŠsheâs on shift. Should be back soon.â
âYouâre lucky to room with your sister. I had to sleep under Liz for three years and you know how much that girl smells,â Riley said.Â
Ellie chuckled. âI never said Piper didnât smell.âÂ
Riley nodded. Her smile reappeared. âWanna know what Iâve been up to?â
âAll this timeâŠâ Ellieâs voice grew soft. âI thought you were dead.â
âYeahâHere,â Riley said. Her hand reached around her neck and removed a small pendant. She ran her thumb over it before passing it over to Ellie. âLook.â
Ellieâs jaw fell open. âNo way. Youâre a Firefly.â As Ellie gawked at the pendant, Riley meandered around the room. In the corner of the room were a couple photos. Most of them were of Ellie and Piper, but one was of Ellie and Riley.Â
Rileyâs face flushed pink. âYou still have it up,â she muttered.Â
Ellie's eyes widened as a wave of realization hit her. She rushed to the door and pulled it open. Her head stuck out into the hall and looked both ways. Right to left and to right again.Â
âWhat are you doing?â Riley whispered.Â
Ellie peered over her shoulder at Riley, âIâm making sure I donât get caught with a Firefly in my room.â
Riley chuckled at her friendâs antics. âRelax. There are no soldiers on the entire floor.âÂ
âYou sure about that?â A voice rang out. Ellie jumped back and scrambled to grab her switchblade.Â
Piper stood leaning against the doorway with her arms crossed. Her long dark brown hair was glued to her sweaty forehead. She had a smirk on her face as she watched Ellie and Rileyâs panic. How her sister had crept up on the two of them like that, Ellie had no clue.Â
âJesus fucking Christ, Piper! You gave me a heart attack,â Ellie exclaimed.Â
Piper stepped into the room and shut the door behind her. âRiley. Youâre looking good.âÂ
Riley gulped.Â
âSheâs a Firefly,â Ellie blurted.Â
Riley shot Ellie a nervous look.Â
âRelax Riley. Iâm off duty. No Firefly killing for me anymore,â Piper teased. The words did little to subdue Rileyâs fear. âHey, Iâm not gonna hurt you. I promiseâhere,â she stole the pendant from Ellieâs hands and passed it back to Riley. âCongrats. You got out. Unlike me. Are we cool?â
Riley glanced up from the pendant to Piper. âWeâre cool.â She placed the pendant back around her neck. She looked back to Ellie and Piper. âLetâs get out of here, and Iâll tell you guys all about it, being a Firefly and all.âÂ
âItâs almost morning and I have military drills,â Ellie groaned. âYou know, where we learn how to kill Fireflies.â
âPiper,â Riley begged.Â
Piper sighed and opened up a dresser drawer. She chucked a pair of pants at Ellie. âPut some pants on and letâs go. It won't hurt to miss one drill.âÂ
âThis is so dumb,â Ellie complained as she shoved her legs into the pant holes. This was a new pair Piper had gotten her. With a grunt and a zip of a zipper, Ellie was dressed and ready to go.Â
âCome on. When have we ever gotten into trouble?â Riley reached over to Piper. âPlus, we have FEDRAâs sharpest shooter by our side.â
Piper chuckled. âFlattery will get you nowhere, Riley.â Piper crouched down to the ground and pulled out her backpack from underneath the bed. She opened it up, made a mental checklist of what was missing, and then returned to the dresser to fill the empty spaces. Soon the bag was swung over Piperâs shoulder. A matching one on Ellieâs shoulder per Piperâs request. She knew it was better to be prepared than sorry, especially in the shitty world they lived in.Â
ê§_____________ê§
Piperâs back was leaned up against one of the games in the arcade. BAC-MAN or something like that. The bright yellow letters had faded with time making it hard for the teen to read. Piper had a watchful eye on Riley and Ellieâs cheerful forms. Their hands gripped tightly around the controls of a game that had stopped working long before any of them were born.Â
They were playing an imaginary game of The Turning. Riley squealed and pointed to the black screen telling Ellie to watch out. The two giggled as their playthrough finished.Â
âSo?â Riley asked.Â
Ellie shrugged. âIt was alright.â The smile on her face betrayed her bored tone.Â
âYou loved it!â Riley corrected.
âYeah. I kinda did,â Ellie confessed.Â
The two of them shared a look and then burst into a fit of laughing. Piper smiles as she pushes herself off the game. âAlright, you twoââ
âDo you hear that?â Riley interrupted.Â
The trio went silent. A faint sound in the distance began to creep into their ears. It was music and it was muffled by a door in front of them.Â
Riley smiled and headed towards the door. Ellie tensed and reached out to grasp Rileyâs arm.Â
âHey,â Riley stopped in her tracks. âWe should head back.â Ellie turned to look at Piper for reassurance. âI need to head back.âÂ
Piper sent her sister a confused look at the mention of âIâ.Â
Riley brushed Ellieâs arm away. âYouâve got plenty of time.â
âRileyâŠâ Ellie muttered. âI donât have any more strikes left at this place.â Riley and Piper froze.Â
âWhat do you mean you donât have any more strikes, Ellie?â Piper asked.Â
What had Ellie been getting into when she was away, Piper thought. Her worry for her sister grew. Piper knew that she was a treasure to FEDRA but that didnât extend to her sister. The line that allowed Piper to stay close to her sister was already thin, but now it seemed to be hanging by a thread.Â
âTomorrow, weâll just pick up where we left off,â Ellie proposed, completely ignoring her sisterâs question.Â
Rileyâs expression fell. Piper knew that look. That look of fear, sadness, and a lost future. There wasnât going to be a tomorrow.Â
The words that left Rileyâs mouth next only confirmed Piperâs suspicions. âI canât.âÂ
âWell, weâll just do it another day then.â Ellie was getting desperate. Riley stepped away from the door and reached out to Ellie. Ellie scoffed and pushed Riley away. âOkay Firefly-girl, when?â
âThereâs not going to be a when, Ellie. Or a tomorrow for that matter,â Piper answered for Riley.Â
Riley looked down. The ground seemed really interesting right now. Almost as if it held all the secrets of the world. Â
Ellie shook her head. It couldnât be. âRiley?â
âTheyâve asked me to leave,â Riley muttered.Â
âLeave what?â Ellie felt her throat tightening up.Â
Riley sniffed and looked up at Ellie. Her dark eyes filled with tears. âBoston. Iâm supposed to join a group in another city.âÂ
Ellie glared at her friend. Anger melted with frustration, and sadness. She wasnât mad at Riley. She couldnât be. Instead, she bore a hatred for them. The ones who were sending her best friend away. Soon Piperâd be taken from her. Sheâs heard what the FEDRA soldiers say about her sister. Sheâd be eighteen soon. Everyone was leaving. They were leaving and Ellie would be alone.Â
âI argued with them to stay here!â Riley exclaimed. âBut you know how Marlene is. Nothing is easy with her. Everythingâs a testâŠâ Riley grew quiet. âTheyâre picking me up tomorrow.âÂ
An âOkay,â was all Ellie could muster.Â
Riley scoffed. âThatâs it?âÂ
Piper took a step back from the two of them. Their argument was one she was not invited to. She knew her presence would only aggravate them more. She stepped back to the comfort of the BAC-MAN game and closed her eyes. Her eyes tried to tune into the faint music. It still could be heard over Riley and Ellieâs commanding voices.Â
âWhat do you want me to say?â Ellie was exasperated.Â
âI donât know. How about some friendly advice?â Riley suggested.Â
Ellie rolled her eyes.Â
âEllie. Iâm serious.â
âFine!â Ellieâs jaw clenched. âWhyâd you bring me and Piper here?â
Piper sighed. Looks like she couldnât escape the argument after all. She began to shuffle out of her place by the machine when Rileyâs voice broke through.Â
It was soft, clear, pure, and sincere. âI wanted to see you.âÂ
Oh, Piper thought.Â
There was a small pause before Ellie asked again. The meaning behind Rileyâs words went in one ear and out the other. Piper wanted to smack her sister on the side of her head and call her a dumbass but decided against it. Ellie could figure this out on her own.Â
âNo. Why did you bring us here?â
âI donât know.â
ââI donât know?ââ Ellie repeated. âYou want my advice? Go.â
Piper winced. Jesus Ellie. She knew her sister could be cruel, but this was just mean.Â
âCâmon. Letâs just say our goodbyes. Piper,â Ellie stated.Â
Piper re-entered the conversation. Her head spun from the dancing Ellie and Riley were doing around each other.Â
âIâm gonna go check out this music,â Piper announced.Â
Ellieâs eyes went wide at her sister's actions. One might think she was just stabbed in the back.Â
âPiper!â Ellie reprimanded, earning a middle finger from her sister as she disappeared through the doors. Ellieâs eyes flashed to Riley. âRileyâŠâ Ellie warned. Riley shrugged and followed Piper.Â
The arcade that moments before seemed so lively and fun, now was the cause of chills to climb underneath Ellieâs skin. The eyes of the game characters on worn posters stared at her following her every movement. She was alone. It was dark. She was alone. Her ears echoed with the pounding of her heart, and the faint sound of music seeping through the doors.Â
âGoddamn it, âEllie cursed. Before the walls around her could cave in, Ellie opened the door and chased after Riley and Piper.Â
She found herself in a large and open space. Ellieâs eyes narrowed as they adjusted to the warm lights that flooded her view. There was a distant hum. Electricity. There was power. Ellie scanned the room and found her sister and Riley huddled over a radio.Â
âHave you ever seen anything like this?â Riley muttered. Her eyes were agape bright smile on her face.Â
Piper shook her head. The view was undeniable. There was something about the wake that the fall and chaos humanity caused that created an enticing atmosphere. The three of them stood in what Piper thought to be a mall of some sort. Sheâd heard about it from the older folks in the QZ. A store with many more stores. âYou could find anything you needed,â theyâd tell her. Despite the debris and trash scattered all around the floor, the mall had retained its original state. Piper knew that the stores had probably been picked over and that most of the dark corners were probably piled up with bodies or infected. She could still imagine what it would have been like before the outbreak.Â
She imagined that she'd come here with friends, a big group of them. They'd hang out all day, spending money and snacking on the food in the food courts. Piper smiled. Thatâs how life should have been not patrolling the QZ and shooting at anything that makes a sound or moves.Â
âAre we done gawking?â Ellie asked.Â
âI donât know. Are we?â Piper snapped. She was over her sisterâs tantrum.Â
âHey, you donât get to be pissed off at me, when Iâm not pissed off at you,â Ellie retorted.Â
âFor what?â Riley shot back. âAsking you what you think?â
Piper rolled her eyes.Â
âWhen have you ever cared about what I think? We were good. We were better than good and then you told me to fuck off. And then you just up and vanish. This whole dayâŠâ Ellieâs voice cracks just enough to make Piper regret her harsh words. ââŠDo you feel guilty? Do you want an out? Iâm giving it to you.âÂ
âIâm supposed to hole up on the other side of town. If I get caught as a Firefly, Iâm dead,â Riley spat. Theyâd all be dead if they were caught, Y/N corrected. âGuilt didnât make me cross a city full of soldiers, Ellie. And yeah, I did some shit that I donât know how to take back butâ Iâm trying,â Riley pleaded.Â
She shrugged off her backpack and placed it on the floor. The group was silent as they all watched Riley reach into her bag and pulled out two plastic guns-water guns. Piper had only seen them once before. A family in the QZ once had them before they were killed. Piper was friends with their little boy. He was sweet, but sweet isnât cut out for the world.Â
âThose water guns youâve been dreaming ofâŠâ Riley began.â I nearly got shot for these,â she chucked as if almost dying was funny. âSurprise.âÂ
Ellie didnât know what to say. Piper had told her about water guns before. How the cool water sprayed in your face as youâd chase after your friends under the summer sun was exhilarating. Even if it was just in the streets of the QZ. Ellie walked over to Riley and took a water gun into her hand. The plastic was smooth and there wasn't a scratch in sight. From the looks of it, the toys could have been manufactured yesterday and Ellie wouldnât have been able to tell the difference.Â
She twirled the water gun around in her hand. âOkay. FirstâŠIâm gonna destroy you.â She cocked the hammer back and readied her stance to aim. âAnd then weâll talk.â
Riley smirked and mimicked Ellieâs actions. âYouâre about to get drenched.â
âOkay,â Piper interjected. Ellie and Riley lowered their âweaponsâ and turned to look at her. âIâm gonna go up ahead and make sure the area is clear. If I remember correctly FEDRA has already swept the building.â Ellie sighed. âThat said. Iâm still gonna check. You two stay together. Ellie, do youââ
âMy switchblade is in my jacket pocket. I promise to not venture into dark areas. I promise to stay next to Riley and pay attention to my surroundings,â Ellie recited on instinct. Â
âAndâŠ?â Piper nudged on.Â
âWhat? I know Iâm not forgetting anything,â Ellie exclaimed.Â
âAnd have fun,â Piper replied. She flashed her sister a smile. âIâll keep a lookout for anything useful. Any requests?â
âOoo,â Ellie blurted. âA new shirt would be nice. This one is starting to stink.â Riley cocked a brow up. âPiper takes requests on what weâd like and maybe sheâll bring it back,â Ellie explained.Â
Riley nodded. âShirts would be great.â She said.
âOkayâŠâ With that Piper left Riley and Ellie to their own devices. Their cheerful screams and playful taunts filled Piperâs ears. Sound was better than silence. Though sound could attract the not so pretty things. While she didnât think there would be anything or anyone, she still left the safety of the group to ease her nerves.Â
Piper reached for her thigh holster and pulled out her pistol. It was old, but it hadnât failed her yet. Her hands gripped the gun tightly. A makeshift flashlight was taped onto the weapon, guiding Piper through the unlit areas of the mall. Her skills from the past five years were put to use. Each twitch in her muscles was calculated. Her feet falling toe to heel avoided the broken glass and breakable debris. Her thighs burned from her low stance, but it offered protection. Easier for her to duck, roll, or dart away. Her muscle memory made it easy for the teen to clear store by store. Her eyes scanned each area for anything useful.Â
Piper had gained a reputation amongst FEDRA and in the QZ for her luck. Sheâd always seemed to find what she was looking for. A skill that came in handy. Piper had discovered a clothing store and was amazed to find clothing still hung up on the racks. She trekked through the aisle and scoffed at the womenâs fashion. The scandalous, short t-shirts with bright colors and thin fabrics did nothing to stave off the fury of nature. Piper never understood how someone could dress like thatâdress impractically.Â
Finally, Piper found the menâs section of the store. In a back corner, there was a shelf full of long-sleeved shirts. Piper reached out her hand and fumbled with the material between her thumb and pointer finger. Thick and warm. She checked the sizes, grabbed the ones that were in the best condition, and shoved them into her backpack. She glanced around the store one last time, before making her way to the next one.Â
The voices of Riley and Ellie grew faint, and Piper prayed to God that theyâd be safe.Â
ê§_____________ê§
To say they were wet was an understatement. Riley and Ellie were drenched to the bone. One round was played. Soon one round became five. They would have continued on, but the way their lungs screamed at them, it wouldâve taken an act of God.Â
âHey, soâŠI said like an asshole, but I totally meant it. You should go,â Ellie told Riley. âThis is something that youâve wanted forâŠyou know, forever. So, who am I to stop you?âÂ
Ellie couldnât believe the words that were leaving her mouth and the fact that they were genuine was even more improbable. If Piper had been here, sheâd be so proud of her.Â
Riley smiled. âThe one person that can.â The words sounded like a joke, but it was an empty threat. Truly only one person could stop Riley from leaving.Â
Ellieâs face turned a bright red. She chuckled and brushed off the feeling. âNo. Please, donât go. Iâll be so miserable without you.â She teased, unsure of the way her heart was beating in her chest. âIâll be fine. Youâll be fineâŠweâll see each other again.â
Riley nodded. She motioned to the water guns. âYou should keep these. Theyâre not gonna do me any good.âÂ
Ellie happily removed the gun from Rileyâs hand and placed it in her bag alongside her own. Riley watched Ellie over her shoulder and noticed a pair of headphones wrapped around a box-like shape.Â
âYou still lug that Walkman around?â Riley wondered.Â
âAlways,â Ellie states like it was the only truth she ever knew.Â
âLet me see it.âÂ
Ellie reached into her bag and pulled out the Walkman. Her hands gently passed it over to Riley. The headphone wire coiled around the Walkman that had seen better days. Â
âWhatâs in it?â Riley asked. Her hands unwrapped the headphones.
âThat tape you gave me,â Ellie said.Â
Riley smiled and nudged Ellieâs shoulder. Ellie gazed at Riley as she walked over to the stereo system popping the lid open and inserting the tape inside. With a click, the stereo sprang to life and a song began to play. It was I Got You, Babe. A song that Ellie listened to religiously.Â
âYou really will be miserable without me,â Riley teased.Â
âShut up.â Ellie reached down to pick up her backpack.Â
âLeave it,â Riley instructed. Ellie, confused, left the bag alone. âFollow me.â
âWhat are we doinâ?â Ellie asked.Â
âYouâll see.âÂ
Suddenly Riley hopped onto a jewellery table. The stereo played the beat to which Riley swayed her hips.Â
âWhat are youââ Ellie giggled. âReally?â
âCâmere,â Riley motioned for Ellie to join her. âYour sister did say to have fun.â
Ellie jumped onto the table with Riley. âSo stupidâŠâ
âCome on,â Riley begged. With the combined efforts of Rileyâs pouting face, the way she danced and twirled around the table tops, and the familiar tune of the song, Ellie soon found herself bobbing along.Â
The two share a dance: arms twirled around, feet stomped and tapped around, hips swirled from side to side. The song came to an end and a new one began. Ellie had lost momentum and finished her dance.Â
âEllie? What is it?â Riley asked.Â
Ellie looked up at Riley. The tiny lights of the mall flashed around them like stars. Ellie wondered what Riley would look like under the stars. She just knew Riley would be beautiful. Riley always was. Ellieâs vision blurred. Who was she kidding? Theyâd never see the stars together. Ellie would never again hold Riley in her arms as they danced together. The thought of it made Ellie sick. Sheâd still have Piper, but Piper wasnât Riley. No one was Riley.Â
âDonât go,â Ellieâs heart pleaded.Â
Riley could only stare at Ellie. The anger, the sadness, the frustration, and the freedom they were both feeling from earlier melted away only leaving one thing left: love. Riley couldnât leave. She couldnât leave Ellieâher Ellie. So, Riley did the only thing she could think of. She took the pendant, her dream (what she thought was her dream) and cast it to the side. Her sight solely focused on Ellie. Her dream came true.Â
Ellieâs heart jumped at the sight. She found her body doing what she had spent nights thinking about. Ellie stepped forward onto the tips of her toes and kissed Riley. It was perfect for that one moment when her lips were against Rileyâs. In that one moment, everything was Riley. Her smell, the taste of her lips, and the feeling of Riley kissing her back was more than enough to send Ellie to the grave and back again.Â
Just as fast as it came. The moment was over. Ellie opened her eyes. Riley was still there. It was real. The kiss. Riley. Everything was real.Â
âThat was beautiful,â a voice interrupted. Riley and Ellie stepped back from each other facing Piper who had a proud smile on her face.
âPiper, I can exââ Ellie began to say.Â
âI was wondering when youâd get together,â Piper said. Ellie opened her mouth to say something else, but Piper continued. âFound some shirts in real good condition. Here.â She threw the shirts to Riley and Ellie. âPut them on. Youâre drenchedâŠOh and,â Piper stuck her hand into her bag. âFound some socks and underwear. You can never have enough of those.â
âSocks and underwear?â Riley chuckled.Â
âSeriously,â Y/N said. âFucking life savers. Wet socks and dirty underwear are horrific. The worst things ever. Plus, itâs unsanitary and a one-way ticket to getting sick. Then fromââ
âSick to being dead.â Ellie finished. Sheâd heard her sisterâs preaching about consistently changing clothes, bathing, and keeping good hygiene. Piper was smart, but sometimes Ellie didnât think her sister truly understood the world they lived in. Wet socks, dirty clothes, and poor hygiene were probably the least of their problems.Â
Once the two girls had changed into the dry clothes and Riley had stuffed the extra socks and underwear Piper had gotten her, an air of awkwardness fell over them. Piper was quick to pick up on it.Â
âIâm gonna continue looking through the stores. Iâm sure thereâs something else I can find,â Piper said. Her body quickly moved away from Ellie and Riley.Â
Ellie hopped down from the table. âWait,â she hissed at Piper. Piper turned around to face Ellie. Ellie nervously looked back at Riley just to make sure they were a safe distance away from her. Ellie didnât want her to overhear anything.Â
âSoâŠâ Ellie began. The words failed to leave her mouth.Â
âSoâŠ?â Piper repeated.Â
âYou know?â Ellie looked nervously up at her sister. Piper smiled and readjusted her hold on her backpack. âI was gonna tellââ
âI know. Iâve known for a while. Plus, youâre not the only one who likes girls.â
Ellieâs eyes bulged out of her head. âWhat?!â
âOkay, not just girls, but yeah,â Piper said sheepishly.Â
âWho?â Ellie asked.Â
âCassie Langsome,â Piper replied.Â
âCassie? Youâve got to be kidding me.â
âWhat?â Piper asked.Â
âYou liked our weapons instructor? Sheâs likeâŠforty years old.â
âHey, Iâm not saying Iâm perfect. And come on, have you seen her? Jesus.â She shook her head. âAnyways, this is about you. Not me. Go and be with the girl of your dreams while you still can.â Piper pushed Ellie back to Riley.Â
âButâŠhow? Like what do I do?â Ellie harshly whispered.Â
âI donât know. Youâve got this. You were doing just fine on your own.â Piper reassured Ellie. Â
âThanks,â Ellie said. The sarcasm oozed from her voice.Â
Piper sighed. âCâmere.â Ellie stepped forward and Piper raked a hand through her sisterâs hair. Then she straightened the shirt, tucked it into Ellieâs jeans and took a step back to admire her handy work.Â
Ellie stood holding her hand. âHow do Iââ
âYou look great,â Piper answered. Her sister did look beautiful. Ellieâs hair was tied in a ponytail with a few strands to shape her face. The light shown down on Piperâs sister catching the numerous shades of Ellieâs hair: pine brown, gold like the sun when it hit the windows of the decaying buildings in the QZ just right, and red like the flowers Piper had only seen in picture books. The shirt Piper had given Ellie moments before was slightly too big, but with it now tucked in, it looked nice.Â
Ellie smiled before dashing over to where Riley stood. Piper smiled watching her little sister climb back up onto the table next to Riley. Without another word, Piper excuses herself. Her worries about Ellie's safety are tucked away behind the happiness of the moment. Ellie and Riley deserved this.
âSorry,â Ellie said.Â
âFor what?â Riley asked. Her eyes shamelessly eyed Ellie up and down. Whatever Piper had done was working its magic.Â
There was, yet again, another awkward silence. However, this one no longer spawned from the presence of another person. This was a hesitant silence. Riley and Ellie crossed the line of friendship that they knew so well. These were uncharted waters. Dangers lurked nearby, by the two of them that theyâd face them together.Â
Ellie was the first to break the silence. âWhat do we do now?â She internally cringed. Thatâs the best you can come up with Ellie?
âWeâll figure it out. But I donât think Marleneâs gonna go for itââÂ
Riley was silenced by a roar in the distance. It was an eerie roar that chilled the very blood pumping in their bodies. The deep growl rumbled through the ground shattering the bliss the girls relished in.Â
There they were. The Infected. They came charging into the store. The same path Piper had taken out moments before. The two girls froze. Not a breath left their lungs. Not a muscle moved.Â
âRun!â Piperâs voice screamed. Ellie didnât need another warning. She jumped from the table and ran in the direction away from the runners, but Riley wasnât beside her.Â
âRiley!â Ellie cried.Â
One of the runnerâs heads whipped around to the sound. Its bloodshot eyes narrowed on Rileyâs figure. Her arm extended and pistol in hand. Riley took in a shaking breath. A finger hovered over the trigger. The runner ran and Riley shot.Â
ê§_____________ê§
It didnât take long for Piper to find another store. Unlike all the clothing stores from before, Piper found herself in a weapon store. The glass display cases had been smashed and stolen. The only things that remained were empty boxes of ammunition. Piper sighed. If anything, finding something from this store would be the real jackpot. She waved her flashlight around. Piper spotted a shimmer in the corner and took a few cautious steps forward.Â
A triumphant cheer left her mouth. She really did seem to have the best of luck. In her hands, she held a pistol left behind. She opened the cylinder and found three bullets left. Not the best but it was better than nothing. Plus, she had access to ammo from her work with FEDRA. She checked her own gun. Two bullets. She had five shots left. Five shots to make count if needed. Hopefully not any time soon, Piper prayed.Â
The minute the prayer circulated her mind. It was ripped from her as a guttural growl echoed throughout the mall. The sound of pounding footsteps fell closer and closer to where she was. Quickly, Piper turned off her flashlight. If these were what she thought they were, they relied on sight. If she couldnât see. Neither could they. The thundering steps faded away and for a moment a wave of relief fell over Piper. She was safe.Â
The infected had passed her by. Then Piperâs blood ran cold. Her heart stopped beating. Ellie. Riley. Fuck.Â
She shoved the extra gun into her holster and dashed out of the store. Her figure ran after the infected. Stupid she knew, but so was leaving her sister and Riley alone. âHey!â She called out to the infected. They were only ten feet away from her. Four infected with their backs facing her. They shouldâve turââ HEY!!â She screamed.Â
Still the infected ran. The music. They had heard.Â
âRUN!!â She screamed hoping that her voice could warn them in time. She didnât know what sheâd do if they were killed. What if they were bit? What about Ellie?
Piper shook away the tears threatening to blur her sight. Now was not the time.Â
Piper raised her pistol and shot. An infected fell to the floor. Two of the remaining three, whipped around to face her. Piper stood her ground. One bullet left. The infected charged her. Its arms reached out and hit the floor. It reminded Piper of a rabid dog. Only one thing on its mind. It leapt forward. Bang!
The runner dropped to the floor. The other infected soon by its side. Itsâ dark eyes scanned the area roaring in frustration. Piper cursed silently as she fumbled for the extra gun. Three bullets. Three shots. She reminded herself. Piper raised the gun once again. The runner tilted its head at her. A growl rumbled low, shaking Piper to her core. Bang!
One. Two. Three. Piper counted. There were four. She heard another shot of a gun. Piperâs eyes found Ellie and Riley. Riley hastily shot the gun over and over in the direction of the fourth and last runner. Each shot missed the monster.
The runner charged Riley. It leapt over tables and scattered chairs. Itsâ speed never slowed.Â
âRUN!!! RUN!!â Piper screamed. Her body was fueled by adrenaline like the oxygen she breathed.Â
Ellie and Riley didnât need another warning as she ran from the infected. Their speed was much slower and more frantic than that of the calculated hunter.Â
Piper screamed, she shouted. Anything to grab the runnerâs attention. But it ignored her. âCOME GET ME!!â Piper bellowed. She raised an unsteady hand shot. It grazed the infectedâs leg knocking it off its track. Piper scrambled to get closer. Being closer meant a better shot. Piper cried out in frustration as her steps became uncertain. Her feet tripped over chair legs and her body ran into tables.Â
Riley screamed.Â
NO. NO. NO. NO. NO. NO.
Piper could see the struggle. The runner cornered Riley against a wall. It was snarling and its spit flew in her face. Ellie was on the floor. She stood up with her knife in hand. She grunted as she brought her hand down on the infected. It spun around and jumped on Ellie.Â
NO. NO. NO. NO. NO. NO.
One bullet left. One shot. It was too far away. Not enough time.Â
FUCK. FUCK. FUCK. FUCK. FUCK. FUCK.
Piper raised the gun. Her hands were shaking. Sheâd only been afraid once before. Fear. Something Piper shoved down and locked away. It broke free and corrupted her entire being: her mind, her body, the very blood that ran through her veins.
BANG!
The infected fell limp. Itsâ weight crashed onto Ellie.Â
Piper dropped the gun and ran over to Ellie and Riley. She pulled the infected off of Ellie. Riley was sobbing against the wall. Ellie stood up shaken. Her eyes were wide as she looked around.Â
âI think itâs clear,â Ellie stated. She brushed the stray strands of hair back to calm her nerves.Â
Ellie looked down at her sister and the alarm bells went off. She had never seen Piper scared. The infected were gone. Piper had saved them. The girl who never missed. So why was Piper looking at Ellie like she was broken?Â
âEllie,â Riley muttered. âEllie, your arm.âÂ
Part of Ellie knew. Of course, everything had to come crashing down. She moves her gaze down to her arm. It was bloody. It wasnât supposed to be bleeding. It didnât even hurt. WhyâŠ?
Ellie brushed the blood away. Her mind was fighting the inevitable. There was a bite mark. Deep and bloody.Â
âNo. no, no, no, no, no!â Ellie screamed.Â
Riley raised her hand up to Ellie. The runner had bitten her too.Â
Ellie ran over to Riley taking her hand in hers. âNo, this isnât supposed to happen. NO!âÂ
Piper sat on the ground. The infected lay dead at her feet. She felt sick. She wanted to puke. To scream. To cry. To take the butt of her pistol and bang the infected over and over until itsâ skull collapsed. But all she could do was sit. Her mind was trapped in a never-ending loop. Protect Ellie. Protect Ellie. Protect Ellie. She had failed. Piper had failed.Â
âWhat are we going to do?â Ellie asked Piper but Piper couldn't hear her. Piper couldnât do anything. âPipes?â
âThe way I see it,â Riley answered. âWe got two options.â She took out her handgun.Â
The gleam of the handle in the light snapped Piper out of her trance. âNo. Thereâs no fucking way.âÂ
Riley ignored Piperâs opinion. âOption one. We take the easy way out. It's quick and painless,â Riley told Ellie. âI'm not a fan of option one.âÂ
âWhatâs option two?â Ellie croaked.Â
âWe fight.â
âFight for what? Weâre gonna turn into one of those things,â Ellie sobbed.
Riley scooted closer to Ellie. Her hand lifted up to cup Ellieâs cheek. Piper could only watch on. âThere's a million ways we shouldâve died before today. And a million ways we can die before tomorrow. But we fight... for every second we get to spend with each other. Whether itâs two minutes. Or two days. We don't give that up.â
She paused for a moment to look at Ellie. âI donât want to give that up. My vote; letâs just wait it out. You know, we canâŠbe all poetic and just lose our minds together.âÂ
Slowly, Ellie shook her head up and down.Â
âAnd thenâŠRiley continued. Before we turn into one of them Piper can finish it off.â Riley raised the pistol to Piper.Â
Piper frantically shook her head. A sob escaped Piperâs mouth. âNo,â her voice was broken. âI canâtââ Suddenly Piperâs body trembled. Tears fell freely down her sweat, blood, and dirt-stained face. âYou canâtââ
âPiper,â Ellie whispered. âIâm sorry.â Ellie wasnât sure what she was sorry for. Maybe the fourteen years of attitude she had given her sister, or maybe it was allowing herself to get bitten. She was sorry for those sleepless nights she gave Piper. She was sorry for all the annoying jokes that made her sister groan. She was sorry for being her sister. Sorry that you got stuck with me.Â
Piper continued to shake her head. âNoâdonât. You canâtâ,â her tongue and mind failed her. Just like she failed Ellie.Â
Ellie nudged her way out of Rileyâs arms. âPipes,â Ellie reached out to her sister. She took Piperâs hand and placed the gun into it securing her sisterâs fingers around the handle. âPromise meââ Ellieâs voice cracked.Â
âNo! Fuck, noâ Piper begged as she tried to shove the gun back into Ellieâs hands.Â
âPromise me you wonât let me, and Riley become one of them. Thatâs weâll die just me and her.âÂ
âNo! Ellie, Iââ Piper squinted over Ellieâs bite mark. âYouâre bitâinfectâŠâ She couldnât bring herself to say it. As if she never muttered the words, the reality of their situation would never come true. âEllie,â Piper stuck out her arm. Her sleeves rolled back. âBite me.âÂ
âWhat? Piperââ
âEllie, please!â Piper pleaded.Â
What was her sister thinking? Ellie shook her head and fearful tears fell down her cheeks. Piper crawled over to Ellie and shoved her arm in Ellieâs face. âPiper, what are yââ
Piper cried in frustration. âRiley?â Piper raised her arm in Rileyâs direction. The girl was trembling at the sight. She hurriedly shook her head.Â
âFuck! JustâEllie please,â Piper begged. Her arm struggled to stay up.Â
âNo! Piper, I wonâtââ
âFine! Fucking fine!â Piper screamed. She moved away from Ellie and towards the lifeless infected. She turned the body over and pried open its mouth. The fungus would survive after death, right? Piper stuck her forearm in the infectedâs slack mouth and closed its jaw around her arm.Â
âPiper!â Ellie screamed. She pulled her sister away from the infected and grabbed her arm. There was no bite mark. âWhat the hell are you thinking?!âÂ
Piper cried and yanked her arm away from Ellie. âDonât leave me,â Her quiet voice spoke amplitudes. Those simple words broke Ellie. Her sister was scared. She was fucking scared of being alone. Just like Ellie. Had her sister been scared this whole fucking time?Â
âPiper, Iâm not going toâ,â Ellie sobbed.Â
Piper, in her anger, fury, and fear, bit down hard. She couldnât feel the pain. She couldnât taste the iron and copper of her blood seeping into her mouth covering her tongue. She couldnât hear Ellie and Rileyâs screams and cries at the sight. Piper pulled back. Her eyes surveyed the bite mark. She was bit. But even that wasnât enough. Piper wasnât infected. She would never be.Â
The realization awakened something deep within Piper. Ellie was infected. Riley was infected and she wasnât. Why didnât the infected attack her? Why had she missed the shot? Why? Why? Why? Piper now resorted to her whole body shaking no. It was hard to see now with her puffy eyes and the never-ending tears that clouded her sight. Â
Then, Ellie began to cry. âPlease, Pipes. Please. Youâre scaring me.â
Piper choked on a sob. She didnât feel the way her hand clutched the gun tighter. She didnât feel her legs tuck in close. She didnât feel Riley and Ellie wrap their arms around her holding her close. Piper didnât feel her arms pull them closer. Sheâd hold onto them until she couldnât hold on any longer.Â
As Piper held onto Ellie and Riley, her mind settled. The second her sister turned. The second she had to pull the trigger on the two girls was the second sheâd raise the gun to her head. Sheâd find comfort in the smooth surface of the trigger. The barrel leaned against her head. Piper had made a promise fourteen years ago. Me and you till the end, Ellie. Thatâs what itâd be. Piper and Ellie until the end.Â
ê§_____________ê§
Ellie jolted awake. Her neck strained from falling asleep on Piperâs shoulder. Was it already time for another check-up?Â
In walked Marlene. Her posture was tall and confident as she approached Ellie and Piper. Ellie nudged her sister awake. Piper took in a sharp breath as Marlene crouched next to the girls. The woman handed them their backpacks. The second the familiar possessions were in their hands, Ellie dug through the pockets pulling out her switchblade and Piper her empty gun. They didnât need to know it was empty.Â
Ellie and Piper pointed their respective weapons at Marlene. Their backs pushed into the wall as far they could go. Marlene looked the girls up and down and laughed.Â
âYouâre not scared,â Ellie noted. Her defensive stance fell slightly.Â
Marlene shook her head.Â
âThen unlock us,â Piper commanded. Her hands were still raised, unwavering.Â
Marlene scoffed. âHow âbout we start with thank you?â
Piper rolled her eyes. âFor what?â
Marlene cocked her brow up. âFor saving your life? For telling them not to shoot you or your sister? That was me, just in case you didnât know.â
Ellie and Piper shared a glance before completely lowering their weapons.Â
âWhy did you stop them?â Ellie asked.Â
Marlene sighed. âWeâll get to that.âÂ
She leaned forward causing Ellie and Piper to jump back. Piper on instinct raised her empty gun. Marlene cautiously raised the key. Ellie looked from the key to Piper. Piper nodded her head and Ellie extended her chain hand out. Marlene unlocked the chains, doing the same for Piper afterwards.Â
âSo, Sir Theobald Buster HimenâŠâ Marlene said. Ellie giggled earning a look from Marlene. âHow ya feeling?â
âThe same.âÂ
Marlene looked to Piper who just nodded in response.Â
âIs it gonna happen?â Ellie asked quietly. Her voice was unsure and her eyes carefully watching her sister.Â
Marlene shook her head. âNo.â
âCan we go?â Piper questioned.Â
âNo,â Marlene replied.Â
âWe won't tell anyone about any of this, I swear,â Ellie promised. She couldnât stand being locked in the room any longer. All she wanted now was to be back in that tiny room with the bunk beds and cotton sheets. Ellie wanted to sleep above her sister in a bed that squeaked too much. She wanted Piper to never grow oldâto never turn eighteen.Â
âWhere are you gonna go?â Marlene asked. âBack to FEDRA Military School? Are you that anxious to be a soldier? What about you Piper? Do you really wanna be their dog?â
Piper lurched forward her face inches away from Marleneâs. The woman didnât so much as flinch at the action. âYou think we chose that place? That I wanted to be their dog? They put us there when Ellie and I were barely old enough to walk. Itâs for orphans,â Piper spat. The spit landed on Marleneâs face.Â
Marlene wiped the spit away. âThey didnât put you there. I did.â Her voice was calm.Â
Ellie chuckled. â...Are you my fucking mom, or something?â
âDo I look like your mom?â
Ellie turned to Piper who answered. âNo.â Ellie knew Piper had a better clue as to who their mother was. Even though she was three years old when their mom died. It was better than having no memory of her at all, even if it was a vague picture.
âMy name is Marlene. Though you probably already know that. Iâm the leader of the Fireflies in the Boston QZ.âÂ
Ellie scrunched her nose up. âWhy would terrorists dump me and Piper with FEDRA?â
âBecause itâs where youâd be safest, and you were safe until you decided to sneak out andâŠâ Marleneâs brows furrowed. âTerrorist? Was Riley a terrorist?â
Piper flinched at the name. A hand sneaked up to hold Ellieâs.Â
âWhy wonât you let us go home?â Ellie whispered. Tears threatened to fall from her big brown eyes.Â
Marleneâs stern composure dropped at the sight of Ellie. She was only just a kid and so was Piper. âBecause you two have a greater purpose than any of us could ever imagine.âÂ
Ellie looked up at Marlene with wide eyes. Her? Important?
âSo, weâre leaving tonight, and weâre taking you two with us.âÂ
Piper opened her mouth to refute Marleneâs words, but she was interrupted by a harsh knock on the door.Â
The woman who had inspected them earlier stepped into the room. âHeâs here.â She told Marlene.Â
Marlene nodded. âFive minutes.â Then the door shut. Marlene leaned in close to the two girls. Her eyes conveyed a seriousness that made even Piper cower away from her desire to fight back.Â
âWhat Iâm about to tell you two cannot be repeated to anyone. Because if you do,â Marleneâs next words were slow and clear. âI assure you; you will die.â
Well, fuck, thought Piper.Â
ê§_____________ê§
Ellie wasnât prepared to hear the sounds of gunfire so soon, and neither was Piper. The second the first gun went off, Piper jumped in front of Ellie. Her empty pistol raised, and an arm held her sister behind her. The gunshots only got more frequent. With each bang, time slowed.Â
Piperâs mind was wired. She noted the distance of the shots and the time between them. As each second passed, the shots died down. A muffled groan came from behind the door.Â
Piper took in a quiet breath and whispered to Ellie to stay behind. Ellie opened her mouth to refuse her sisterâs orders, but Piper threatened to chain her sister up. Ellie reluctantly agreed to stay back. Her small hands held the switchblade close as Piper crept towards the door. She turned the tarnished knob and stepped out into the hallway. Her gun was raised as she looked around each corner.Â
Marlene was bent over on the ground and some Firefly lady was helping her up. Marlene winced. So thatâs where the groan came from. Piper stepped over the fallen body of one of the guards and approached Marlene.Â
There was the creaking of wood behind her. Just as Piper whipped around, Ellie grunted her hands raised as she charged a man with a rifle. He swatted her to the side as if she was a fly.Â
âFuck!â Ellie cursed as she hit the wall.Â
âEllie!â Piper shouted. Her gun was raised at the man, who, in return, raised his gun at the teen. He didnât care if he was pointing a weapon at a child. The girl to his side reached down at his feet. He quickly stepped on the small knife, successfully stopping her from reaching it. His eyes glared at her warningly as if asking her to try and see whatâll happen if she takes it.Â
âJoel?â Marlene croaked.
Piperâs nose scrunched up. Did Marlene know this man?
âMarlene?â The man said.Â
Piper narrowed her eyes. She looked at Ellie. âYou okay?â
Ellie tore her eyes from the gun and pointed at her sister. âYeah.â
âJesus, Ellie, you canât be stupid like that,â reprimanded Piper.Â
Joel scowled. Didnât these kids realize they had guns trained on them?
A womanâs voice spoke up from behind the man. âSo, this is who Robert screwed us over with?â She scoffed. âThe Che Guevara of Boston? I mean the war must be going shitty for you to buy merch from scumbags like him.âÂ
Marlene sighed and clutched her side. âYeah, well it has been. The merch was bad, and he obviously didnât take âfuck offâ for an answer.Â
âGive me my knife,â Ellie commanded.Â
Joel ignored Ellie. âWhat do you need a car battery for?â He asked Marlene. Ellie stuck her hand out. âDonât,â Joel warned. His gun was now on Ellie.Â
Piper stepped forward. The grip on her gun tightened. Marlene looked from Piper and then to Joel and Ellie. If she didnât step on soon something bad was going to happen.Â
âNot at her. Point it at me.â Marlene said calmly. âPiper.â
 Piper grunted.Â
âPiper,â Marlene said again. âLower your gun.â
Piper grumbled and lowered the weapon to her side.Â
Joel eyed the teen up and down. The scowl grew on his face.Â
âTo answer your question,â Marlene said to Joel. âI need it for a better reason than you do. No offence, but Tommy is just one man.â
âHowââ Joel questioned.Â
âItâs our business to know things,â Marlene explained.
âTo know things,â Joel mocked. âYouâre the cause of it. You turned my own brother against me.â
Piper winced. Sheesh did these two have it out for each other.Â
Joel shot her a look and Piper raised her hands up innocently.Â
âOkay, Joel.â Marlene agreed, trying to get the man to not shoot the girls.Â
âThat was a lot of gunfire,â One of the Fireflies noted. âFEDRAâs gonna be on the way.â
Piperâs jaw clenched. She was right and Piper would give anything to not be caught. In FEDRAâs eyes, she deserted them. Something that they did not take lightly.Â
âWe were gonna move Ellie and Piper outta the zone tonight, but we wonât make it anywhere like this. Not for a while anywayâŠâ Marlene explained.Â
Piper turned to look at her with confusion. Why was she telling these dipshits what the plan was? Her question was soon answered.Â
âSo now Iâm thinking youâre gonna do it,â Marlene stated.Â
Piper and Ellie immediately argued against the idea.
 âIâm not going with them.â
âThereâs no fucking way,â Piper and Ellie said at the same time.Â
It seemed as if Joel didnât agree either. âThe hellââ
âLet me take her,â The Firefly said.Â
âTessâŠwe donât have time for this,â Joel said.Â
It was beginning to be hard for Piper to hear anything anyone was saying.Â
Marlene cleared her throat and spoke loudly, silencing the group. âYou donât have time?â
The woman behind Joel stepped forward. Piper eyed the gigantic purple bruise on the womanâs eye.Â
âWho are they to you?â She interrogated Marlene.Â
Marlene sighed. âThereâs a team of fireflies waiting for them at the old state house. I know whatâs out there. We were going with an entire squadron for that very reason. But now, I donât have a truck. I donât have a squadron. FEDRAâs five minutes away. What I do have, is you. And I know what you guys are capable of. For better or worse.Â
Piper gulped. This wasnât good at all.Â
âWhat are they capable of?â Ellie asked. Piper shook her head, begging her not to go there. Ellie lowered her eyes to the floor avoiding her sisterâs gaze.Â
âYouâŠYou get her there safely; they get you what you need. Not just a battery. The whole thing. Fueled-up trucks, guns, supplies, all of it. I swear.â Marlene promised.Â
There was a pause as the wheels in Joelâs brain turned. He looked at the woman before kicking Ellieâs knife away. He pulled the woman to the side, out of earshot from the group.Â
âAsshole,â Ellie cursed.Â
The second, Joelâs back turned. Piper rushed over to Ellie helping her to her feet. She pulled her sister as far away from the man as she could. Her body served as a shield. Joel flinched at the motion but soon went back to discussing the deal with his partner.Â
The woman broke away from Joel. âOkay. Hereâs the deal,â she pointed to Ellie and Piper. âWeâll get them to your crew at the statehouse. But before we hand her over, they give us everything that we want. If not, we kill them there and then.âÂ
Marlene nodded. âDeal.âÂ
Ellie gasped. âReally? That fast?â
âEllieâŠâ Piper warned.Â
âYou two are all that matters. My team will not jeopardize that. Remember what I told you? Now go get your backpack. Now, Ellie. Piper.âÂ
Piper didnât need to be told what to do. She shuffled Ellie back into the room where the two of them retrieved their things. In less than a minute, the two sisters were back in the hall. The woman, who introduced herself as Tess, looked them up and down.Â
âLetâs go,â She instructed.Â
Piper stepped forward to follow the woman. Ellie peered over her shoulder at Marlene. Her eyes begged her to find another option. Marlene just shook her head and motioned for Ellie to follow.Â
âJoelâŠâ Marlene called out. âDonât fuck this up.â She paused. âPlease.â
ê§_____________ê§
To say it was raining was nothing. The sky was mourning. Rain poured down on top of the four of them. The streets quickly filled up with puddles, splashing the group as they walked by. Piper wished that sheâd put on her coat before stepping outside. The group received many looks from onlookers. It wasnât normal to see a family-like group in this world.Â
When humanity collapsed, one of the first things to go was family. Families meant a group of people. A large crowd attracted certain attention: raiders, FEDRA, infected, the whole lot. Not to mention supplies were harder to come by in the masses, so feeding a group of four was out of the question.Â
Piper felt the urge to scream at the passersby. âThey arenât my parents.â She didnât like the feeling of having to trust someone other than herself. Let alone two adults sheâd met minutes ago. Two adults who wouldnât have hesitated on shooting her and Ellie.Â
Tess led the group down the streets of the Boston QZ. Her jacket hood lifted up and covered her face. Joel stood in the back. His watchful eye was on Ellie and her sister. Very early on his mind deemed Piper a threat. Despite her being a kid, Joel knew she was not to be messed with.Â
Up ahead was a FEDRA agent. They wore the traditional gear: a bulletproof vest, decked out in all black, helmet, and fully loaded rifle in hand. Joel lowered his head as he passed, but not before noticing Piper duck her head down low as she pulled up her sweatshirt hood to cover the side of her face. Elie doing the same.Â
Just how important were these kids? Joel thought.
Soon Tess led the group into one of the housing buildings in the QZ. Up the stairs, they climbed. More eyes followed their every move. Piper didnât like it. She didnât like being watched. Tess shuffled through her pocket before pulling out a key and inserting it into a lock. A door swung open, and Tess ushered Piper and Ellie inside.Â
âGive us a minute alright?â Tess asked. Her tone told Piper she wasnât asking before slamming the door shut.Â
âWhat the fucââ Ellie shouted. âPiper?âÂ
âLeave it, Ellie,â Piper said. She found an empty chair and shrugged off her bag.Â
They were in an apartment. Modest and well-kept. At least it was warm and dry. Piper shivered and zipped open her bag to find some dry clothes. âEllie, change into somââÂ
âWay ahead of you sis,â Ellie mentioned as she flung off her shirt replacing it with a new one.
Once they were changed, the two meandered around the room. Piper found a book on one of the shelves and slumped down into a seat. She cracked the book open and began to read.Â
Ellieâs eyes scanned the room. She turned toward the door. A minute was sure as hell looking more like an eternity. She shuffled through the objects on the table in the room. One of which was a big book of songs. She picked it up and flipped through the pages, landing on one with a hidden slip of paper. She furrowed her brows as she read the page.Â
Suddenly the door opened, and Joel stomped into the room. The door slammed shut behind him. He marched over to the couch and sat down with a sigh. He stretched out his limbs, and a few pops followed.Â
Jesus, how old was this man. Piper guessed him to be in his late 50s from the peppery shade of his hair. Piper chuckled. He was a grumpy old man.Â
Joelâs face flashed in confusion at Piperâs giggle.Â
âWhoâs Bill and Frank?â Ellie blurted. Joelâs body tensed. âThat radio is a smuggling code, right? â60s songs, they donât have anything new, â70s they got new stuff, whatâs â80s?â
âEllie.â Piper harshly whispered.
Joel stood up from his seat and stole the book from Ellieâs hands. His eyes bore into Ellieâs. Suddenly the book slammed onto the table making Ellie flinch. She quickly raised her hands up defensively and tiptoed over to Piper. As if she made the wrong step, Joel would wring her neck in between his large hands.Â
Joelâs eyes followed her. When she reached her sister, Joel grumbled and returned to his seat on the couch. He laid back resting his arms over his eyes.Â
âWhat are you doing?â Ellie asked.Â
âEllie,â Piper said again.Â
Ellie shrugged her sister off.Â
âKilling time,â Joel replied.Â
âWell, what am I supposed to do?!âÂ
âIâm sure youâll figure that out,â Joel replied.Â
Piper tugged on Ellieâs sleeve motioning for her to sit down. Ellie sighed and sat down next to her sister.Â
âYour watch is broken,â Ellie noted.Â
Joel didnât answer her. He cracked his eye open to peek at the watch before closing his eyes once again. Soon, the sound of Joelâs sleep-ridden breaths filled the air.Â
Ellie leaned against Piperâs shoulders and read the book along with her. Her sister quietly whispered the words aloud. The pages were worn thin from years of use. Piperâs hand delicately slid down the pages, her eyes reading the words that her finger skimmed under. Ellie smiled softly at the sound of her sisterâs voice. In the corner of her eyes, she caught sight of the book.Â
âDonât think about it,â Piper commented. Her eyes never left the page.Â
âWhaââ
âLeave the book alone.â
Ellie grumbled. âFine.â She returned her gaze over to the book. Sheâd break the code sooner or later.Â
ê§_____________ê§
It was a few hours later when Joel stirred awake from his sleep.Â
âYou mumble in your sleep,â Ellie pointed out.Â
Joel quickly rolled to his side. His shoulders tensed at the sound of her voice. It wasnât long before he remembered why the two girls were there.Â
Ellie looked outside the window. She could feel Piperâs eyes on her. âIâve never been on the other side of the wall. Look how dark it isâŠYou guys go out there a lot?â
Piper removed her gaze from Ellie and looked out the window. Night had fallen. The QZ had gone quiet for the night. A shiver made its way through Piperâs body as she thought of her night shifts for FEDRA. There was stillness in Boston at night. People safely indoors. The rain was pouring down from above. It was almost peaceful. However, Piper knew better. Night was when the monsters roamed the world.Â
Joel shrugged. âI guess.â
âWhen was the last time?â
âMaybe a year. Whatâs it matter?â Joel wondered.Â
âBut you know where to go. So, weâre gonna be okay,â Ellie whispered.Â
Piper reached out to rub her sisterâs back in a comforting manner. They would be okay. Piper would make sure of it. She wasnât going to let anything happen to Ellie.
Joelâs expression softened for a moment before building his walls back up. âYeah. So, whatâs the deal with you two anyway? Are you two some kind of bigwigâs daughter or something?â
Ellie was silent as she looked out the window. Piper lowered her hand and nodded. âSomething like that,â she said.Â
There was a long beat. The rain so graciously filled their silence.Â
âThe radio came on when you were sleeping,â Piper muttered. Ellie turned around to face her sister. A confused look on her face.Â
âWhat? What was the song?â There was an urgency in Joelâs voice.Â
âSomething likeâŠâ Piper cleared her throat and sang the song. âWake me up before you go-go?â
Joel pinched the bridge of his nose with a force that could have broken it. âShit,â he cursed.Â
Piper smiled. âGotcha. â80s means trouble, Ellie.â She turned to Joel. âCode broken.â
Ellie smirked at her sisterâs clever trap. Joel could only stare at the teen. There was a glint in her eye as she smiled triumphantly at Joel. It was a fire. A raging and vengeful fire. A glint that said I am not to be messed with.Â
Joelâs jaw clenched and stepped forward. âListenââÂ
Tess barged into the room. The door was quick to lock again. âThe spot under Lancaster looks good.â She turned to Piper and Ellie. âYou two got a jacket in your pack?â
âYeah,â Ellie replied.Â
Tess nodded. âOkay, get it. Itâs time to go.â Her tone had a hint of familiarity to it. Piper couldnât help but think that Tess had been a mother before everything. From the way she looked at the girls to how she asked about the jackets, reminded Piper of how she watched over Ellie.Â
The two girls quickly threw on their jackets. Tess and Joel gave each other a look before leading the girls out of the apartment.Â
There was a tightness in Piperâs stomach. The uncomfortable feeling kept biting into her side. It was a feeling she couldnât shake. Something was going to go down tonight. Something not so good.Â
ê§_____________ê§
Even out of the tunnel, everything was pitch black. Above their heads, searchlights flashed. Ellie shuddered. She didnât like the dark. With Piper always out of patrol, she was always alone when it was dark. Piper pulled her sister close once they emerged from the tunnel. Joel placed the cover back on top of the whole.Â
âHoly shit! Iâm actually outside,â Ellie muttered a bit too loud.Â
âJesus Christ,â Tess and Piper said at the same time.Â
The sinister light flashed in their direction. Piper yanked Ellie down to the ground. The light narrowly missed the group.Â
âOh shit.â Ellies cursed.Â
âYeah, oh shit,â Piper hushed.
Tess grabbed onto Piper and Ellieâs shoulders and pulled them in close. âOkay, weâre gonna tail the left edge around the buffer zone. You stay close and you follow my lead. Got it?â
Piper and Ellie nodded.Â
âLetâs go.âÂ
It was strange for Piper to go out at night without the protective gear that FEDRA provided for her. Yeah, she did have to admit that the working conditions were shitty and that she never really got a full night's rest in five years, but at least she had the comfort of a bulletproof vest and those hard helmets. Now she felt bare in her jacket, hoodie, and jeans. Even the gun she held in her hand was empty. Just a symbol of empty powerâempty threats.Â
âOkay, weâre gonna tail the left edge around the buffer zone. You stay close and you follow my lead.â Tess told the two girls.Â
âYeah. Yeah, of course.â Ellie agreed.Â
Piper scoffed, earning a condescending look from Tess. Piper wanted to blurt out that she knew how to take care of herself out here but thought it wouldnât be wise to tell the two adults whose patience was on a thin line that she works for FEDRA. A line that Ellieâs life was resting on. So, she bit her tongue. The twinge of pain helped Piper keep her head straight.Â
âLetâs go,â Tess muttered.Â
Through the rain, they trekked. Under cars, buses, and into makeshift tunnels they walked. The rain was beating down on their backs. Tess was still in the lead and Joel in the rear. Piper was stuck in the middle. She felt like a sitting duck. Tess and Joel would be the first in the group alerted. Leaving Piper and Ellie with scraps of time to defend themselves. Being in the middle of a group meant you had to trust in the leaders. You had to trust theyâd notice everything. You had to trust theyâd avoid risky scenarios. You had to place your life in their hands trusting that they wouldnât let you fall as they walked in the dark with their eyes closed. Piper knew she should be in front. She knew the FEDRA routes like the back of her hand. When youâre twelve and forced into a world of violence, you have to learn fast or get left behind. Being left behind was not a choice, so Piper learned. She knew the blind spots the officers had from the helmets they wore. She knew that the rifles more often than not got jammed when firing. She knew that being in the rain was as lucky as they could have gotten. The rain muffled the noise which made it hard to hear. This meant itâd also be hard for her to hear. She knew where the soldiers would look. She knew how far the flashlight illuminated. She knew there was a space between the shoulders where the padding was thin.Â
She knew she should have heard the hum of the officer. She should have seen the dim flashlight bouncing off the wall. She knew she should have seen the glint of the scope on the rifle. She knew she should have grabbed Ellie and ran.Â
âWhat the fuck? Hey! Hey, hey, hey, don't move! Don't move!â an officer shouted at them. Joel and Tess immediately raised their hands. Piper stepped in front of Ellie.Â
The officer stepped forward. His gun raised and a flashlight blinded the group. Piperâs eyes shut from the brilliant light. âYou gotta be shittin' me,â the officer gasped.Â
Piper froze. She knew that voice. She immediately forced her head down doing the same with Ellieâs head. Her eyes shut tight hoping he hadnât seen her.Â
âOkay, let's talk this out,â Joel said in an attempt to negotiate.Â
The officer wasnât having it. âTurn around,â he told Joel.Â
âHold onââÂ
âGet on your fuckin' knees. Get on your fuckin' knees!â The officer shouted.Â
âHold onâŠâ Joel tried again.Â
âGet on your knees!â The officer was no longer asking. He was so close; Piper could see his nostrils flare and eyes turn red.Â
âJust get on your knees. Just get on your knees!â Tess begged. She motioned for Piper and Ellie to copy her. The three of them fell to the ground. Mud and gravel tainted their jeans.Â
âListen. You let us do this run⊠We'll split the cards with you.â Tess proposed.Â
âOh, will you?â
âYeah!â Tess nodded.Â
The officer feigned happiness. âI'm so blessed. Hands-on your head, eyes forward. Hands-on your head!â
Piper quickly raised her hands up and interlocked them behind her head. Ellie did the same.Â
The officer turned to Tess, his gaze on the small device in his hand. Piper whispered to Ellie. âEllie.â Her eyes never left the officer. âHand me your switchblade.âÂ
Ellie was too trapped in her fear to hear her.Â
âEllie, come on.â Piper hissed.Â
âReally, man?â Tess grumbled as she saw the device.Â
âYep. We're doing this by the book.â
âJesus Christ,â Tess muttered.Â
Ellie was too focused on the sound of her heart pounding in her head to notice Piper slip her hand into her pocket to grab the switchblade. The device beeps and came back green. Tess was clean.Â
The officer turned around to Joel. Piper resumed her position: knees digging into the ground and hand behind her head.Â
âUnauthorized exit. They'll hang you for that,â The officer stated.Â
âFine, everything off of this run! And half off on all the pills!â Joel shouted over the thundering rain.Â
âHalf off?â The officer scoffed. âAll off.â
Again, the device beeped. It was green. Joel was clean.Â
âRisk my job for half offâŠâ He stepped to Ellie and lifted the device up. He turned his head to the side and looked right at Piper. A large smile appeared on his face. âYou're out of your fuckin' mind. Iâve hit the fucking mother lode.â
Joel and Tess share a concerned look as the officer dropped the device down just to lift Piperâs chin up. Then he flashed the light in her eyes. She tried to pull away, but the officer only gripped harder.Â
âPiper fucking Williams. Deserter. FEDRAâs golden girl. I wonder what theyâd give me for turning you in.âÂ
Tess and Joelâs eyes widened. Who the fuck was this kid?Â
Ellie screamed and lunged at the man long enough for Piper to reveal the blade and stab it in between the manâs shoulder blades. The weak spot.Â
âEllie! Piper!â Tess screamed. The officer pulled away. Ellie fell to the ground. The blade was still lodged into the manâs back.Â
âFucking bitch! Iâm gonna fucking kill and rââ He raised his gun only to find that Joel had stepped in the way. An arm was out protecting the two girls behind him.Â
Piperâs breath caught in her throat at the sight in front of her. Joelâs back to her. His stance was tall and wide. He was protecting her. He was protecting Ellieâprotecting them. Piper was suddenly glad that it was raining. No one would think the betraying streaks falling down her face were hers.Â
âGet out of the fucking way!â The officer screamed. A vein bulged out of his forehead. He meant fucking murder. The things that he was going to do to the girls.Â
Joelâs jaw clenched and his eyes narrowed at the man. âWoah. We can fix this,â he said.Â
âMove! Move! MO-â
The officer was cut off as Joel lurched forward. His large hand found a place between the officerâs nose and brow bone. The officer fell back clutching his face. But it wasnât enough. Joelâs fist pounded repeatedly into the officerâs face like the rain falling relentlessly from the sky. Thud. Thud. Thud. Joel hit until he couldnât hit anymore. The officerâs face was a concave bowl filled with blood, sweat, and other bodily fluids. He took a step back. His breath was heavy, and his ears were pumped with blood. His hand hurt, but he didnât care.Â
âNo! No! Iâm not sick.â Ellie screamed.Â
âJoel!!â Tess hollered. She raised the device up for Joel to see. It was red. Ellie was infected.Â
âNO! Tess. Sheâs notââ Piper tried to explain.Â
âIâm not sick! Iâm not sick. LOOK! This is three weeks old. Nobody lasts more than a day! Does this look like a day old to you?â Ellie stuck out her arm. The wound fully healed. All that was left was a scar.Â
âI should fucking kill you! When did it happen?â Tess bellowed.Â
âI dare you to fucking try,â Piper spat.Â
âIt doesnât matter! You have to trust me. Theyâre gonna catch us if we donât run!âÂ
As if on command a shrieking siren slithered through the air. Its piercing noise shook all of them to their core.Â
âI know these guys. Theyâre gonna come, and they wonât hesitate to kill. Weâve got to go!â Piper yelled. Her voice was powerful, making even the screaming siren silent. Even Joel was taken aback at the raw force that came from the girlâs voice.Â
Tess nodded. Sheâd get her answers soon. âJoel, we gotta move. We gotta move, Joel!âÂ
She ushered the girls through a hole in a nearby fence. âJoel!â Tess called out. Joel looked back at the officer who heâd just beaten to death moments before. The rain dripped down from his brow. He took a hand to wipe away the water. Underneath his foot, he noticed the shimmer of a bladeâs edge. He bent down to pick it up. The rain made a quick job of washing away the blood. His hand stung as he held the small weapon. His teeth ground against each other from the pain as he turned and ran after Tess and the girls, shoving the knife into his pocket.Â
The fence jingled as he made his way through the hole. Joelâs back was turned on Boston. A city he was glad to leave behind. Heâd get to his brother one way or another. He looked at his hand. It was broken at least that was for sure.Â
Joel was starting to think he was in over his head. This was getting to be too much to handle. The girls. The FEDRA agent. Ellie was infected. He pinched the bridge of his nose as the faces of Piper and Ellie flashed in his mind. The fear on their faces. The threats left the officerâs mouth. Something that had been untouched for two decades seemed to awaken in him. It fueled his fist. The fist of justice. His fury.Â
âThis better be fucking worth it,â he told himself. Unaware that the sins of his life were coming back to haunt him.Â

Piper should have been tired, yet there she sat. Her back was stiff, tall, and defiant. Hell, even Joel could admit to himself he was exhausted and sore from the night before. Not to mention, the throbbing pain in his hand. Joel felt as if he had a million splinters stuck deep within his skin. Each time he moved his hand, the pain would spark a chain reaction. At least the swelling had gone down. That was a good sign. A sign he would have taken notice of if he wasnât so busy staring down the teenager in front of him.Â
There was no indication in her stance and glare that she was at all affected by the events of the night before. The only sign of otherwise was the dark circles under her eyes. A biological betrayal. Joel hadnât noticed it before, but the more he observed Piper the more he began to think that those dark circles may be a permanent feature on her face. Yes, he remembered clearly now. She had those same dark circles when they first met. However, this time, they were a few shades deeper than before. Missing a whole nightâs rest would do that to you. Joel was all too familiar with the dark circles that grew under his own brown eyes. It was hard to get a good night's rest when it felt like everything was out to get you. It didnât help that it was actually the case. One wrong move. One extra second of sleep could mean death.Â
âIf you stare at her any longer you may implode, Joel,â Tess muttered. Her voice filled to the brim with sarcasm.Â
He didnât respond to her. Only kept his eyes on the girl in front of them.Â
Tess sighed and followed his gaze. From her perspective, she saw the falter in Piperâs posture. Her posture was slumped over ever so slightly, though, from Joelâs view, it would be mistaken as perfect. The young girl's body looked about ready to collapse to the floor in a deep sleep, however, Tess knew that in cases like these, the mind won over the body.Â
It reminded her of her son when he was a toddler. The argument of âIâm not tiredâ flashed in her mind. Her kid didnât know any better. He wanted to stay up and not miss a single thing, but as a knowing mother, she knew that rest would allow him to experience the world untainted from the grumpiness that came when one was tired.Â
So Tess wasnât surprised when she told Piper the exact same thing sheâd tell her son.Â
âYou know, lifeâs just a bit more pleasant when you get some sleep. Trust me,â Tess said softly. She knew it was best not to push this subject. âWhy not get some shut-eye before your sister wakes up? Weâll stand guard.â
âThanks for the offer, but Iâd rather not place my life or my sisterâs life into the hands of someone who got us caught by FEDRA last night.â Piper kept her gaze on Joel as she replied. Her genuine tone had the same snarkiness that was present in her sisterâs voice.Â
Tess chuckled at the encounter. âSuit yourself.â She sat back in her chair and looked between Joel and Piper once more. The two were more similar than sheâd like to admit. They had that same tired yet proud look in their eyes. Their bodies were on guard in front of those they protected. The unwavering stubbornness that Tess had grown all too comfortable with was apparent in both Joelâs and Piperâs demeanour.Â
Ellie stirred awake from behind her sister, causing Joel to tighten his grip on the gun. Instinctively, Piper moved her body so that it defended more of her sister. Tess sighed. Joel wasnât making this easier and neither was Piper who sat even more on edge, any sign of weakness in her posture was long gone.Â
âMorning,â Tess called out. She saw how Ellie wiped the sleep from her eyes only for them to land on Joelâs gun. Great now, both girls were on edge. Way to go Joel.Â
âDo I look like I'm infected?â Ellie mumbled bringing up the elephant in the room.Â
Joel grunted, leaving Tess to interpret for the girl. âShow us your arm.â
âYeah, it's not getting any worse, is it?â Ellie spat as he pulled up her sleeve to display the bite mark on her arm. She wasnât liking the idea of waking up to the threat of a bullet in her body.Â
Tess nodded allowing Ellie to return her sleeve to normal.Â
It was quiet in the building and Ellie didnât like the quiet. Her eyes darted across the room and widened in remembrance. They were out of the QZ. In the open city.Â
âIf we're out in the open city, why aren't we getting swarmed?â Ellie asked. It was her dying question. After all the rumours she had heard floating around the QZ, you couldnât blame the girl for being curious.Â
âDon't worry about that,â Tess replied. It only served as fuel to the flame. Ellie opened her mouth to ask another question when Piper cut her off.Â
âWell, I'm gonna,â Piper growled. It was then Ellie noticed the tension in the air. A shiver ran up her spine as she saw the glare her sister was sending Joel. Joelâs glare was just as harsh. Man was Ellie glad to not be on the receiving end of either of them.Â
Tess cocked her brow. It was her turn to be curious. âWhat was Marlene doing with an infected kid?â
âSheâs not infected,â Piper spat. Her voice was seething with anger and only served as an instigator in the battle between Joel and Piper.Â
âShe found me after I was bitten,â Ellie blurted, hoping to diffuse the tension.Â
Tess moved her attention to Ellie. âAnd she didn't shoot you.â For a moment Tess could swear there was a new line on Piperâs forehead.Â
âClearly not. She locked me up and had her guys test me every day to see if I was getting sick,â Ellie explained.Â
Now this interested Tess. âTest you how?â
Ellie sighed and rolled her eyes. âI have to peeâŠâ
âTest you... how?â Tess repeated.Â
âThey'd make us count to 10 and hold out our hand and then keep it steady. But, you know, I think what really impressed them was the fact that we didn't turn into fucking monsters. There. Happy?â Piper spat.Â
There was a momentary pause in the conversation. Joelâs eyes narrowed and Tessâ brow furrowed. Did their ears hear right?
âWait, both of you?â Tess finally enchanted her confusion.Â
Without another word, Piper yanked back her jacket, just as Ellie had done before, and presented her arm for the adults to see.Â
The wound looked different from Ellieâs, at least to Tess it did. No prominent veins were spiralling out from the scabbed-over wound. In all honesty, it just looked like a normal bite mark. The only thing that dismayed Tess was the depth of the wound. It was deep. Something that would only happen if there was a determined force behind it. Something sheâd only seen from Infected.Â
âNow can I please?â Ellie grumbled. She was squeezing her legs tight to her body.Â
Tess took one more look at Piperâs arm before dismissing Ellie to use the makeshift bathroom. âFine. Back there. You can find a spot. And here. Tear out a few pages.â She chucked a magazine she had found to Ellie who caught it with ease.Â
âThere's not gonna be anything bad in here?â Ellie asked as she tiptoed over to the room Tess had pointed to earlier.Â
âJust you,â Piper smirked back at her sister.Â
âOh, funny,â Ellie responded.Â
Tess smiled. That simple action reminded her that they were just kids. Kids who were doing the best they could with the world handed to them. Kids who were bit and infected, but still kids. A grumbling beside her shook Tess out of her nostalgic trance.Â
âBroken. Maybe a hairline. It'll heal fast,â Joel mumbled just loud enough for Tess to hear. He was cradling his hand. Nasty bruises had formed along his knuckles. The skin was an angry red as Joelâs free hand brushed over the injury.Â
âShe made it through the fuckin' night, Joel. Apparently so did Piper.â Tess said in disbelief. These girls were the fucking future. They were something she hadnât had in a long time. Hope. They were hope.Â
âIt doesn't matter,â Joel scoffed. âIt's gonna happen sooner or later. All right? We're still close to the wall. We sneak them back into the QZ. We find a different way to get the battery.âÂ
âThis is our best shot. We take them back to the QZ, someone's gonna notice their arms, they're gonna scan them...then they'll kill them. They kill those girls.â Tess couldnât help the desperation that slipped into her voice.Â
âWell, better them than us. You need to stop talkin' about these kids like theyâve got some kinda life in front of them.â Joel said.Â
Tess ignored him. Joel was never one to believe. It would break his stubborn ass if he ever did believe in anything. Ellie emerged from the back room and sat down next to her sister. She nudged Piperâs shoulder and nodded toward the backpack.Â
âYou two hungry? You can share some of ours.â Tess offered. Joel grimaced as Tess raised the food out to the girls. Fuck, Joel thought Tess. She was going to hope no matter what he said.Â
âThanks,â Piper replied, her voice empty of gratitude. âMarlene sent us with our own.â Just then she handed a sandwich to Ellie and retrieved one for herself. The two girls didnât waste time digging in.Â
Tess smelt an old scent that hit her nose. Her stomach began to grumble at the thought. âIs that chicken?â
âYeah,â Ellie replied. Her mouth was full of food. âMarlene said they get it from smugglers.â She paused. â...Guess not you guys.â
Tess was surprised when she heard Joelâs voice speak up. âHey. Hey! Why...why are you so important to Marlene? And don't lie to me or we'll take you back.âÂ
âYou take us back, you don't get your battery.â Piper plainly said.Â
âYou heard that?â Joel asked in disbelief.Â
Tess butt into the conversation before it could sour again. âThen you must've heard that he wants to shoot you too.â She stood up from her seat despite Joelâs protest and crouched down in front of the girls. âI'm gonna talk to you two like you are adults. Okay?â
Ellie immediately nodded in understanding. Piper just glared at Tess, who glared back until the girl nodded as well. Tess needed them to understand.Â
âJoel and I aren't good people. We're doin' this for us because, apparently, you're worth something. But we don't know what you're worth if we don't know what we have. So answer my question.â
In a quiet voice, Ellie muttered, âShe told me not to tell anybody, and now I'm telling the first people that IâŠâ Ellie was cut off by Piper.Â
âThere's a Firefly base camp somewhere out westâŠâ Piper explained.Â
ââŠwith doctors. They're working on a cure,â Ellie finished.Â
âMm-hm. I've heard this before,â Joel grumbled.Â
âAnd whatever happened to me...to us...is the key to finding the vaccine,â Ellie replied. Her voice was unsteady but full of belief.Â
Joel was taken aback. Did this girl really believe it? âThat's what this is? We've heard this a million times. Vaccines, miracle cures. None of it works. Ever.âÂ
âFuck you, man. I didn't ask for this.â Ellie cried. She was hurt, but so was Joel.Â
âYou and me both. This isn't gonna end well, Tess. We need to go back.â Joel instructed.Â
Tess turned her efforts back to Joel. âLet's just finish it. It doesn't matter if she is or she isn't what the Fireflies say. If they believe that she is then...we get what we want.â
Joel narrowed his eyes at Ellie. âIf she so much as twitchesââ Joel warned.Â
Suddenly there is a loud screech followed by hollow clicking noises.Â
Immediately Piper, Tess, and Joel all turn to Ellie. âDon't,â they say in unison. The power of their voices makes even Ellie pause for a moment.
âOkay. Okay? Okay.â Ellie receded back behind her sister, but not before catching sight of Joelâs gun.Â
âCan I have a gun?â Ellie asked.Â
Once again three voices fill the air. âAbsolutely notâNoâEllie, don't even think about it.â
âOkay, Jesus! Fine. I'll have to throw a fuckin' sandwich at them.â Ellie groaned. She didn't like the idea of having three versions of her sister. One Piper was enough.Â
âLetâs go,â Tess told the two girls.Â
Without another word, the two of them pack up their bags and in one motion, swing them over their shoulders. Joel grunted as he lifted the makeshift barricade from the door. The shelf was heavy and put an unnecessarily large amount of weight on his injured hand. It didnât take long for the barricade to be moved and the door to open.Â
Light from the sun flooded into the room and for a moment it looked as if Joel had disappeared into the light.Â
âIt's clear.â Joelâs gruff voice started before he fully submerged himself in the daylight.Â
While some light found its way through the cracks back in the building, it could not prepare Piperâs eyes for the vast amount of light outside. Her eyes closed shut before opening once again. Her pupils shrunk as they adjusted to the early morning light.Â
âWhoa,â Ellie gasped in disbelief.Â
âYeah, looks different in the daylight, huh?â Tess said.Â
Tess was right. Things did look different illuminated by the sun. Piper could clearly see the decaying buildings that were overgrown by vines and weeds. The greens swirled around the greys and browns on the buildings. She could even see some trees that poked their way through the giant holes in the roofs. Underneath her feet was a road cracked and crumbled. There was barely a hint of the yellow and white paint that once outlined the streets. Cars were rusted over and doors were forever glued shut. On top of it all was a layer of dew. The rain storm from last night left its mark as the plants and wildlife try to soak in as much water as they can before the sun's heat dries it up.Â
Joel let the two girls take in the view. Itâs not every day you get to see the ghost that humanity left behind. âWe should get movin'.â
The group trudged along the roads. Broken glass from the buildings glittered as the sun reflected off of it in just the right spot. They twinkled almost like stars in the night sky. As they journeyed deeper into the city, more and more buildings made friends with the ground, no longer having the strength to stand as tall as they were designed. In the road ahead, sat a crater. The indented in as the grey shade of the road turned a deep black.Â
âIt's like a fucked-up moon!â Ellie cried out in awe.Â
âEllie, be careful,â Piper warned as she saw her sister approach the crater. Her legs pushed up onto the side of the crater to look down into the vast hole.Â
âIs this where they bombed?â Ellie asked. She picked up a stray rock and dropped it into the crater. Her brown eyes followed as it scraped across the ground finally resting in the center of the circle.Â
âYeah. They hit most of the big cities like this,â Tess explained. âThey had to slow the spread somehow. Worked here, but it...didn't in most places.â She walked over to Ellie to help nudge her along. Then she stopped and so had Joel. Piper and Ellie shared a puzzled look.Â
âSo, the State House is across there. It's about a 10-minute walk if you could go straight.â Tess noted.Â
âSo?â Piper asked.Â
âLong way or short way?â Joel replied. His question was directed towards Tess.Â
âI mean, it's the long way or the "we're fuckin' dead" way,â Tess stated.Â
âWell, I vote the long way just based on that limited information,â Ellie muttered.Â
Tess and Joel ignored Ellieâs comment and continued to talk amongst themselves. Piper, just for a moment, noticed the similarity to a book she had read. Something about how parents will converse amongst themselves as if the kids arenât even there. But to think that, Joel and Tess would have to be parents and Piper and Ellie the kids and together theyâd make a family. Once again, an idea that Piper wholeheartedly disagreed with.Â
âWe have to check it from the hotel first,â Joel directed Tess.Â
âOkay,â Tess replied, she looked back at Ellie and Piper. For what reason Piper wasnât sure.Â
Soon after, Joel readjusted his hold on his gun before taking a step forward. Then another and another. There was the crunch of gravel under Piperâs shoes and she found herself and the group walking once more.Â
ê§_____________ê§Â
Her feet were sore and the soles of her shoes were worn. The sun beat down on her back and a smooth layer of sweat had formed on her back. It was making her shirt uncomfortably stick to her skin. Her socks rubbed against the back of her heels scraping against the sensitive skin. She imagined it was turning a shade of red from all the friction. Ellie was soon to change the way her weight balanced on her feet. Toe to heel instead of heel to toe. This seemed to ease the friction, however, it produced a dull pain in her feet. One that seemed only to be relieved with a good complaint or two. âWhy arenât we already fucking there?â Ellie groaned. Already she felt a relief just sharing.Â
âYou'll know it when we're close,â Tess replied.Â
âI didn't know last time,â Ellie muttered.Â
âHow did you get bit?â Tess asked in an attempt to distract the young girl.Â
âEllieââ Piper whispered, but Ellie interrupted her.Â
âYou know the old mall in the QZ?â Ellie asked. She didnât care if her sister was as cautious as a mouse around cats. Ellie liked Tess and her instincts told her that Tess could be trusted. Almost.Â
âThe one that's sealed off and boarded up, and no one's supposed to go in... ever? That one?â Tess clarified. She looked back at the two girls unsure that they would have been stupid enough to go in there.Â
Piper lowered her gaze to the ground. She stuck a foot out to kick around a small pebble on the highway. She was adamant about not looking at Tess, Joel, or Ellie for that matter. Her shoulders slumped over and Joel took notice of how quiet it had gotten.Â
âWhatever. I snuck in. Wanted to see what it was like. Didn't think there was gonna be anything in there, and then one just came at me outta nowhere. Thought I got away, butâŠâ Ellieâs voice grew quiet. Maybe she didnât trust Tess enough with this information. The blood. The pain. The screams were all too fresh. Ellie knew that if she closed her eyes she would see Piper. She would see her sister tear into her skin. She would replay the scene. Ellie felt sick thinking about how the Piper she had grown up with disappeared when she was bitten. Piper was desperate and afraid. But what disturbed Ellie more was the thought that grew in the back of her head. Something in her knew what would have happened to Piper if Ellie had turned.Â
Tessâs voice broke Ellie out of her thoughts. âSo it was just you in there, alone?â
âYeahâI mean Piper was with me, but yeah. Just us two,â Ellie mumbled.Â
Tess halted. She turned to Ellie and Piper. There was a curious look on her face. âHow old are you?â Tess asked the two girls.Â
âFourteen.â
âSeventeen.â Piper and Ellie said at the same time.Â
In Tessâs eyes there flashed a hidden respect for the girls. âWow. Well, I mean, you got some balls on you, sister.âÂ
âThanks,â Ellie muttered to the two of them. She didnât know about Piper, but Ellie grew to like Tess. The woman wasnât a complete asshole like Joel was. In fact, she was almost like a mother. Almost.Â
Piper had told Ellie what she remembered of their mother. Blue eyes. Light-coloured hair. Piper wasnât sure if it was blonde or light brown, but Ellie was confident it was light brown. After all, Ellie and her sisterâs hair was brown. When Ellie was young, she liked to imagine what her mom would look like based on the vague description Piper had. For some reason, the image that came to mind was Piper. An older version of the course, but it was still Piper. Piper had always been there for Ellie. She stepped up when no one else would. But now as Ellie was thinking about it, the image of her mom changed into one that looked like Tess.Â
At first, Ellie disliked the idea. There were no similaritiesâŠexcept that Tess had light brown hair and blue eyes. Just like Piper had told her. Tess was kind in her own way. She would walk next to Ellie and talk to her. Hell, Tess even stood up to Joel for the girls and offered her some of her food.Â
Well, shit.Â
Ellie shook her head to toss the thoughts out. She canât get attached. Sheâs just cargo. Tess will leave just like everyone else. But it couldnât stop Ellie from hoping. Â
âNobody's gonna be comin' after you, right? Like, Mom, Dad ...boyfriend?â Tess wondered.Â
The momentary lap in Piperâs character dissipated. She snickered under her breath as if having anyone out there who would care enough about the two girls was just as possible as pigs flying. âDead, non-existent, and no. No one gives a shit about anyone other than themselves,â Piper scoffed.Â
She didnât notice the flash of sadness in Tessâs eyes as she heard the teenâs response. âYet you care about your sister,â Tess noted.Â
Piperâs jaw clenched as she raised her gaze to glare right at Tess. âThatâs different,â Piper hissed.Â
âRight,â Tess replied. She knew when to not bite back.Â
Ellie, sensing the tension in her sisterâs attitude, chose to change the subject. âEveryone said the open city was crazy. Like, swarms of Infected running around everywhere.â
Again Piper scoffed and rolled her eyes. She kicked the pebble she was playing with so hard it cracked a rusted carâs window. âItâs fucking propaganda thatâs what it is. Want us to stay inside the QZ. Keep us to be their soldiers and dogs.â
Suddenly Joel spoke up from behind the group. âNoâŠnot exactly like that.â He eyed Piper carefully just like Tess did moments before though with a tinge of appreciation. Piper was right after all.
âYou know, people like to tell stories,â Tess explained.Â
âSo, there aren't Super-Infected that explode fungus spores on you?â Ellie wondered. She twirled around on her heel. Her hands made what seemed to be an explosion, as she created sound effects. Her eyes went wide as her hands flew apart.Â
âShit, I hope not,â Tess laughed.Â
âOr ones with split-open heads that see in the dark like bats?â Ellie continued acting out what she thought each Infected would look like.Â
The laughter faded from Tessâs voice. âUhhâŠâ
Suddenly there was an inhuman screech. It echoed off the decaying buildings. The noise got louder and louder as the sound travelled. The group froze. Ellieâs eyes widened.Â
Piper clenched her eyes shut and clenched her fists. Her nails dug into the palms of her hands as she slowed her breathing. Her nails pierced her skin and the warm trickling of blood forced Piper to open her eyes once more. She quickly looked around the group. No one was paying attention to her. Piper quickly brushed her hands on her jacket, wiping the blood away.Â
âWhat was that?â Ellie asked. There was a tinge of curiosity in her voice.Â
âLet's keep movin',â Joel instructed. He looked to Tess who nodded in agreement. As the group continued on, Joel couldnât help how his sight moved down to Piperâs hands. What really drew his attention was the tiny punctures in her skin that were bleeding. Tearing his eyes away from Piperâs hands, Joel fought to keep the thoughts of concern that popped up into his mind.Â
This kid was cargo. Nothing more. Nothing less.Â
ê§_____________ê§Â
When Joel and Tess discussed going to the hotel, Ellie and Piper didnât think much. However, the two teens couldnât help the gasp that left their mouths as they took in the building in front of them. Tess chuckled to herself upon seeing the girlâs reactions. While Piperâs reaction was a bit more subtle than Ellieâs, Tess knew that the young girl was still excited.Â
The hotel was overgrown with nature. Vines snaked up the walls. Surprisingly, most of the glass windows were still intact. The layers of dust that accumulated after twenty years reflected the midday sunlight creating an unearthly glow. It was almost like the hotel had a halo of light surrounding it. Inside was even better. The main floor had flooded and was transformed into what Piper imagined a jungle would look like. Trees shot out from the murky water and their green leaves reached towards the sunlight that trickled through the gaping holes and cracks in the hotelâs ceiling and walls. Piper could hear the sound of trickling water and the croaking ofâŠfrogs?Â
âYou've gotta be kidding me! Ya ever stay in a place like this?â Ellie exclaimed. She spun around in a circle as she gazed up at the ceiling and the treetops.Â
âUh, no, a little out of our league,â Tess replied.Â
âHow do you even know what this is?â Joel asked.Â
âHave you heard of books?â Ellie said with as much sass as her small figure could produce. âWait, are we going in there?â She wondered. Her voice was no longer filled with sass and instead was replaced with fear.Â
âYeah, we gotta get to the stairwell on the other side,â Tess explained.Â
âWell, IâŠâ Ellie eyed the murky water. There was no bottom in sight and it looked deep. There was no way to tell what could be lurking in there. â...I don't know how to swim.â She looked to Piper and Tess for reassurance.Â
âSeriously?â Joel shot back. His tone was full of disbelief.Â
âDo you think we have pools in the QZ?â Ellie retorted.Â
Joel rolled his eyes. âNo, smart ass. I meanâŠâ He jumped from the steps and into the water.Â
Ellieâs eyes widened and her cheeks flushed red with embarrassment. âI don't know how I was supposed to know that.â She said defensively.Â
Piper came up beside her sister and placed a hand on Ellieâs shoulder. âItâs okay, Ellie. Do you have your extra pair of socks?â
Ellie grinned and rolled her eyes. There was the Ellie that Piper knew. âYes, MomâŠâ Ellie said.Â
âGood,â Piper nodded before stepping into the water. It rose just below her hips. There was one thing for sure, Piper did not like being wet. She hated how the water sloshed in her boots. She especially didnât like the feeling of her socks being drenched. To make matters worse. Her pants were sticking to her legs making it even harder to move through the water. What Piper didnât like most was that she was slow. The water dampened her speed and reflexes. Something that made her vulnerable.Â
âThis is so gross!â Ellie exclaimed. She, unlike her sister, was enjoying the experience. Ellie dropped her hands into the water and splashed around a bit. She even flicked some water at Piper who sent a tidal wave in Ellieâs direction. Ellie was now positively drenched but loved every bit of it. It reminded her of playing with those water guns Riley had found.Â
There was a box-like shape in the corner of the room. Next to it was a brass suitcase holder. Ellieâs eyes widened with excitement. âOh, check it out!â She trudged over to the desk, Piper in tow after her. âDing, ding.â Ellie rang the bell on the desk.Â
Piper appeared behind the desk. Her arms pushed up to slightly raise her body out of the water. Something she regretted as the cold air hit her soaking-wet clothes. âGood evening, madam. How may I help you?â Piper said in her best impression of what she thought a hotel worker would sound like.Â
âYes, sir. I would like your finest suite, please.â Ellie replied. Her voice was just as ridiculous as Piperâs had been.Â
Piper raised her brows and broke character. âIâm a sir?âÂ
Ellie sighed, breaking character as well. âWell, fuck, you sounded like a man just there. Your voice was deep anâ all.âÂ
Piper waved her sister off. âOkay. Fine.â Then Piper switched back into her âmanâ voice. âYes, ma'am. Would you like me to take your luggage?â The words were over-enunciated and Piperâs mouth exaggerated the movements of her mouth. A hint of a smile appeared on her face. She was having fun.Â
âOf course, sire,â Ellie replied.Â
âYes, ma'am. Right away, ma'amâŠâ Piper motioned to the suitcase carrier. âHere get on the thingy,â she instructed Ellie.Â
Ellie eagerly hopped on and Piper began to push the cart. Ellie squealed with delight even though the cart was moving slower than a snail. A giggle escaped Piperâs mouth just loud enough for the entire group to hear.Â
Tess smiled fondly at the scene.Â
âYou're a weird kid,â Joel muttered. There was no malice in his voice. In fact, Piper was even sure she heard a hint of amusement.Â
âYou're a weird kid.â Ellie spat back.Â
Piper smirked at Ellieâs response. Suddenly a dark figure splashed in the water below Piper. It touched her leg and she yelped. âOh fuck!â She quickly jumped back from whatever it was. Her body was stiff and defensive as she tripped and fell into the water.Â
Joel moved to the girls without thinking. His gun was ready to fire and protect them. He didnât notice how his breath grew tight realizing he couldnât see Piper. At that moment, Piperâs head shot out of the water and she gasped for breath. Adrenaline was pumped into her system.Â
âOh, my God,â Ellie said as she saw what scared Piper. It was a skeleton of what she assumed was a hotel worker. âUh, sorry,â she mumbled to Joel.
He let out a small sigh of relief and lowered his gun. He kicked the skeleton away from the two girls. Then he found himself looking down at Piper with a look in his eyes that he couldnât place. Joel extended a hand out to the teen.Â
âYou okay?â He asked her. Â
Piper stared at Joelâs hand. Water droplets trickled down her face and dripped down her brow bone. She wiped her face and for a moment considered taking his hand. Maybe she could let someone careâŠnever. Piper brushed the thought away just as she did with Joelâs hand. She didnât need his or Tessâs help. Piper and Ellie were just fine on their own.Â
âYep. Fucking fabulous,â she growled.Â
ê§_____________ê§Â
Piper had been silent the rest of the way through the swamp of the hotel and up the ten flights of stairs the group climbed. She didnât even let out so much as a breath. Joel was pretty much the same. The two of them shared a strained aura. Their boots sloshed and water continued to drip onto the floor.Â
âFuck... Holy shit.â Tess grabbed her lower back and sighed in relief. Her joints ached.Â
âCome on, it wasn't that bad,â Ellie teased. She and Tess had talked the entire way up. Ellie was positive their conversation kept Piper from losing it.Â
âYou try climbing ten fuckin' floors with our knees. See how ya feel.â Tessâs gaze moved down the hallway and she groaned at the sight. A wall had caved in. Something that wasnât there the last time she and Joel were at the hotel. âWell, when the fuck did that happen?âÂ
Joel was already down the hall. He was trying to open the doors, but each one seemed stuck.Â
âMaybe that one,â Tess suggested. It was the last door in the hallway.Â
Joel tried the door and shook his head. âNo.â
Tess sighed. âAll right, well, I mean, maybe I could climb up there, work my way around, and open it from the inside?â She suggested. It would be a tight fit.Â
âUh, no, well, I'm the smallest, so it'd be easier for me to get through,â Ellie replied.Â
âNo,â Piper stated.Â
Tess nodded in agreement with Piper. âIâd listen to your sister. If you die then we get nothing. You stay.â She turned to Joel. âCan you give me a hand?â
Joel extended his hand and Tess took it. He lifted underneath her thigh and boosted her up. Tess was able to grasp some rubble and squeeze her way through the debris. âYou good up there?â Joel called out.Â
âYeah, uh, it's a bit of a mess, so I'm gonna need a few minutes,â explained Tess. Her voice was muffled.Â
Now that Tess was gone, the group grew silent. Ellie huffed in boredom before leaning against the wall. Piper stood looking at the crack where Tess had disappeared from. She clutched her arms close to her body and shivered. The mix of cold air and soaking wet clothes was a deadly combination. Joel peered down at Piperâs shivering body before he reached into his pack and pulled out his jacket. Without a word, he draped it over Piperâs shoulders. He didnât give her a chance to refuse as he walked away and sat opposite Ellie.Â
Piper sighed and drew Joelâs jacket closer to her body. Her shivering calmed down. âIâm going to change into my spare clothes. Ellie?â Piper shot her sister a look.Â
âYeah, yeah, Iâll change my socks,â Ellie mumbled.Â
Piper nodded and turned around and walked to the end of the hall before opening the doorway to the staircase. Joel was not worrying about Piper as she walked away from his presence and into the dark stairwell.Â
Ellie, in the meantime, had peeled over her wet socks and switched them out for dry ones. She leaned against the wall and huffed in boredom.Â
Joel felt a weight in his pockets and remembered he still had Ellieâs switchblade in his pocket. He pulled it out and saw how Ellieâs expression changed instantly.Â
âWhere did you get that?â She asked, extending her hand out. Joel tossed it to the girl.Â
âPulled it out of the FEDRA guyâs back. Thought you might need it.â
âThanks,â Ellie whispered. Then she flipped out the switchblade and began to play with it. The silver blade turned and twisted in her grasp.Â
âNice knife. Where'd you learn to do that?â Joel asked.Â
âThe circus. Where are you from?â Ellie replied.Â
âTexas.â
âWhat about Tess?â
âDetroit. It's in Michigan.â
Ellie scoffed. âI go to school. I know where Detroit is. So, uh, you two like aâŠâ
âPass.â
âHow'd you end up in Boston?â
Joel grumbled. These questions were serving as a shitty distraction. âPass. No more questions about me.âÂ
âHow long do Infected live?â Ellie asked. She stopped flipping her knife.Â
âOh, I thought you went to school,â Joel leered with a tilt of his head.Â
âIt's a really shitty one.âÂ
âWell, some last about a month or two. But there's others been walkin' around âbout 20 years.â Joel explained.Â
âEver kill one?â Ellie asked.Â
âYeah, I killed lots of 'em.âÂ
ââŠWas it hard? Like, knowing they were people once?â Ellieâs voice got quiet.Â
âNo,â a voice from beside Joel and Ellie spoke. It was Piper.Â
âSometimes,â Joel said at the same time.Â
Joel turned his head to look at Piper. She was wearing his jacket over a brown, green, white, and blue striped tee shirt underneath along with a dark pair of jeans. She had the sleeves of his jacket rolled back. It was huge on the teen girl.Â
âWhat about that guy last night?â Ellie asked Joel, bringing his gaze off of Piper. It was another question Joel did not want to answer.Â
Suddenly there was a rustling noise from behind one of the doors in the hallway. Joel shot up from his seat on the floor and pushed Ellie and Piper behind him. His gun raised.Â
âYou can put the gun down, Joel,â Tess's voice instructed from the other side of the door. There was a click and the door swung open. There was a look of unease on Tessâs face.Â
âWhat now?â Joel stressed.Â
ê§_____________ê§Â
Well fuck, was the collective thought as they stared down at the writhing pile of Infected. The sight was nauseating. The bodies of the Infected slithered along the ground. Moans filled the air and merged into one sound of death. Piper couldnât help the foul thoughts that plagued her mind. Her entire body was on edge as she watched the Infected below. She felt like something was crawling underneath her skin, prickling the hairs on the back of her neck. Something that would shred her skin apart and kill her from the inside with its sharp claws around her heart as it tore her apart.Â
âThere's so many,â Ellie muttered. She was in shock. The image of the Infected on top of her from three weeks ago was still fresh in her mind. Â
âThe last time we were here, they were still deep inside the buildings. Then I guess enough people came through looking for the QZ, they went inside seeking shelter⊠and that's how they get more and more of the city bit by bit, year after year,â Tess said.Â
âThey're connected,â Ellie whispered, scared her voice would alter the Infected below.Â
âMore than you know. The fungus also grows underground. Long fibres like wires, some of them stretching over a mile. Now, you step on a patch of cordyceps in one place, and you can wake a dozen Infected from somewhere else. Now they know where you are, now they come. You're not immune from being ripped apart. Do you understand?â Tess leaned close to Ellie. Ellie was quick to nod her head.Â
Piper on the other hand turned away from the ledge. She took in a sharp breath in an attempt to control her shaking. She clenched her eyes tight and felt a cold tear slide down her cheek. The mark from where she bit her arm burned as the screams from that night thundered in her head.Â
NO. NO. ELLIE! NO. NO. PLEASEâŠI CANâTâŠNO!!
âIt's important. I'm tryin' to keep you alive,â Tess told Ellie.Â
The words twisted in Piperâs mind. You canât keep Ellie safe. You canât keep her alive. She got bit because of you. Itâs your fault.Â
NoâŠIâm sorry. I can keep her safe. I CAN!!
Itâs when Ellie speaks that Piper was taken out of her dark thoughts.Â
âSo, we're not goin' that way,' ' Ellie noted.Â
âNo,â Tess said.Â
âWhat do we do then? Short way?!â Ellieâs eyes flashed with worry. If she remembered correctly, the short way was the âweâre fucking dead wayâ.Â
âMuseum,â Joel's voice said.Â
Ellie shivered. She wasnât sure if it was from the cold or the knot that formed in her stomach. The âweâre fucking dead wayâ it is.Â
ê§_____________ê§Â
âYou've gotta be fucking kidding me,â Piper snarled.Â
The museum was overgrown with fungus. Yellow and white tendrils slithered up the withering walls of the museum. Like roots, the fungus spread out from the entryway of the museum. The fungus almost looked painted on. It reminded Piper of the spray paint art found on the walls of the buildings in the QZ. However, this design was deadly.Â
âWell, there's a way across from the top floor,â Tess told the two girls. She pointed upwards.Â
âWell, then I guess it's fine,â Ellie shrugged.Â
âNo, Ellie. Itâs not fucking fine!â Piper exclaimed. She wasnât about to let her sister walk in there. Had she not remembered what Tess told her? The Infected were connected by the fungus. One wrong step and hell would descend upon them.Â
âWe used to take it all the time,â Tess reassured Piper. Well, I tried to.Â
âOkay,â Ellie said.Â
Piper shook her head. âIâm not fucking going in there. Neither is Ellie.â Piper grabbed the hood of her sisterâs jacket and pulled Ellie to her side. âWeâre not going inâŠ,â Piper growled.Â
âLook, it was fine. Piper, youâve gotta trust me.â
âTrust the person who walked up straight into that FEDRA agent? Hell no.â Piperâs eyes narrowed and her body grew stiff as Tess took a step forward.Â
âAwesome,â Ellie said sarcastically. She sighed and tried to remove herself from Piperâs grasp, but her grip was too tight. âJesus Pipes, calm the fuck down. Tess says it's fine, so ââ
âIt's bone dry. It could mean they're all finally dead in there,â announced Joel. Joelâs deep and calm voice eased some of Piperâs nerves.Â
âOh, man. See Piper, weâre fine.â Piper sent Ellie a warning glare. âMind if you let me go?âÂ
Reluctantly, Piper released Ellieâs hoodie. Ellie shrugged off her sisterâs hand and turned to Tess and Joel who were on the ground sifting through their backpacks.Â
Joel pulled out a large flashlight and waved it in front of the girls. âMarlene pack you one of these or just sandwiches?â
âYeah,â Ellie nodded. She and Piper pulled off their bags and began to look for the flashlights Marlene had so graciously given them.Â
Piper groaned. âWhere is that fucking thing?â Then she reached into her pack and began to pull out everything in search of the flashlight. First, it was her wet clothes, then a makeshift first aid kit, some rope, and her gun. Joelâs eyes widened as she pulled out the gun from her bag. His hand instinctively hovered over his own.Â
Something that didnât go unnoticed by Piper. âWhat?! I know how to use one of these things.â She waved the gun around. âItâs not like Iâm gonna shoot you. Plus it's empty.â She opened the cartridge and indeed it was empty. Joelâs hand left his side. âJust grabbing my fucking flashlight,â Piper grumbled finally finding the damn thing.Â
Joelâs shoulders didnât relax until Piper had shoved the gun back into the bag. She made sure to place it at the very bottom of her bag. She didnât need to give Joel another reason to shoot her.Â
âOkay, so⊠more ground rules.â Tess swung her bag back over her shoulder and placed her hands on the girlâs shoulders. Her eyes switched between Piper's and Ellieâs eyes. âWe're gonna go slowly. If we come up against anything, you get behind us and ya stay there, okay?â
âYes,â Ellie said.Â
Tess sent a look to Piper as she scoffed. âYeah. Jesus. Iâll stay behind you.â
Tess pulled back accepting the girlâs acknowledgement and pulled out her gun.Â
âI have a spare handâŠâ Ellie suggested. She pointed to the guns in Tess and Joelâs hands.
âCongratulations,â Joel said as he stepped over the dead fungi and into the Museum.Â
âYeah... cooked,â Joel noted as the group settled into the building. The only source of light came from behind them and their flashlights. Piper was surprised to find that the roof and walls were intact. Part of her was half expecting half of the building to have collapsed and to be overrun with plants and fauna just like the rest of the city.Â
âOh, finally, some fuckin' luck,â said Tess.Â
âI guess we should've gone this way in the first place,â Joel confessed as he looked around the museum. All was quiet and still. He and Tess quickly check a side room to make sure it was clear. Maybe they were in luck.Â
Ellie on the other hand did exactly what Joel and Tess told her not to do. She wandered away. Piper followed her sister. Her hand tightly grasped her own switch. Ellie turned a corner and jumped back. âOh shit! What the fuck did that?â She pointed her flashlight behind the corner and Piper ran to her side, her hand ready to strike. It seemed like Tess and Joel had the same idea.Â
âEllieâŠâ Piper muttered. She pulled her sister away from the dead body.Â
It was a man. His throat ripped open and his shirt torn. Thick blood seeped from the wounds. His eyes were wide open with terror; Frozen in time the moment his life was stolen from his body.Â
Tess tensed beside Joel.â Maybe⊠maybe he was attacked outside and crawled through the doors. The door was open. Could've been him. I don't hear anything.â She said hopefully.Â
âWho would you hear?â Ellie asked curiously before Piperâs hand flew up to cover her mouth. Piper leaned in close and shushed her sister.
Ellie got the message and pulled Piperâs hand away. âWho would you hear?â Ellie whispered. She looked at Tess and Joel. âAre you saying an Infected did that?â
âShh,â Tess pleaded.Â
âBecause I've been attacked by one and it wasn't like that.â Ellie pointed to the body, her voice growing louder than a whisper.Â
âYou know the bat-like ones?â Piper said. Ellie nodded. âWellââ
Joelâs jaw clenched as Piper spoke up. âOkay, from this point forward, we are silent. Not quiet. Silent.â He brought a finger to his lips.Â
âWhatâŠ?â Ellie asked.Â
âNo. No questions. Just do it.â Joel commanded.Â
Ellie sighed, or she would have if Joel was not giving her a death glare. Tess motioned for Piper and Ellie to walk behind Joel. The girls followed Joel as Tess took the back. Her eyes darted from side to side to look out for any sign that could warn her.Â
Piper and Ellie stepped over the fungi that spread all across the floor and spanned across the walls and ceiling. Piper didnât care that Joel stated the fungi were dead as she walked on her tiptoes to avoid even the tiniest fragment of fungi.Â
As the group moved up the stairs of the museum, Piper could see piles of debris and shattered glass mixed between the large root-like tendrils of the fungi. It seemed like the stairs were the focal point for the fungi. It grew denser making it harder for Piper to find a safe place to step. Ellie resorted to hopping from one place to another.Â
There was a creaking sound from above before a rumbling CRASH! Suddenly a part of the ceiling collapsed down onto the stairs just a few feet in front of Joel. The group froze: Their breath stilled, the blood in their body stopped pumping, and every muscle in their body refused to move. All were focused on the sound. They listened as the dust stilled and fell to the floor. They waited for what felt like a century as they were reassured nothing was altered.Â
Joel was the first to take a step. His movement created a chain reaction in the rest of the group. Everyone now continued to make their way up the stairs past the decaying bodies of lifeless infected. Fungi grew out of their cracked skulls and shot out of their eye sockets.Â
Ellie couldnât help but be fascinated with the Infected. She could clearly see the hollowness of the human that the monster was created from. She soon became lost in her thoughts as she imagined what these people must have been like before they were turned. Her steps soon grew careless and less calculated.Â
CRACK!
The group froze again as Ellie winced. The sound pierced the air. The sound came from below Ellie. She cautiously lifted her foot off the ground and glanced down at the crushed hand of the Infected. The hand was reduced to dust and bones. She mouthed a quick sorry to Joel who was staring right where her foot once was and the group trekked up the stairs once more.Â
Piper felt a wave of relief fall over her as she realized the fungi were getting less dense. The stairs finally reached an end and now she and the others stood on the second floor. Light seeped into the hallway from the windows making it just a fraction easier to see.Â
Once again, Joel was the first to move. He crept towards the end of the hallway and pushed the door slightly ajar. Just enough space for him and the others to get through. Piper was the next to walk through the door.Â
The second Piper stepped into the threshold, the building began to groan and croak. The ceiling screeched and a rumbling began. Tess ushered her and Ellie forward. The ceiling cracked open. In desperation, Tess shoved Ellie forward. The two of them came crashing to the ground. The two of them struggle to contain the groan of pain that built in their lungs.Â
The crashing was much too loud. The sound thundered in Piperâs ears. It was all that she could hear. Then came the silence. It was deafening. All of a sudden, Piper became consciously aware of how ear-splittingly loud everything was: her breathing, the creaking of the building, the roaring of her own heart, the blood sloshing about her body, the dust settling around what used to be a doorway.Â
Piper preferred the silence to what came next. It was a bone-chilling scream. One that was followed by a screech from the other direction. There were two. The creatures flocked to the sound. Tess pulled Ellie up by the scruff of her neck and backed away from the collapsed debris. Joel placed a hand in front of Piper and backed her away from the scene. The group walked step by step backwards. Their eyes filled with uncertainty as they looked for any sign of the creatures.Â
Click. Click. Eeraahh! Click.Â
It was coming from behind them. Piper pulled Ellie close as the Clicker came into view through the glass of one of the display cases. Ellieâs eyes widened in fear as she turned away from the shadow of the Clicker.Â
âThey can't see, but they can hear.â Joel mouthed.Â
Ellie nodded in understanding. She needed to be silent. Not Quiet. Something was proving difficult to do. The image of the Infected on top of her clawing at her chest appeared in her mind. The creature spat and snarled as it growled into her ear with a twisted animalistic smile on its face. Ellie couldnât help how her breath quickened in her chest as the clicking grew nearer.Â
The Clicker has rounded the corner of the display case. Itsâ body is only a foot or two away from Joel.Â
Suddenly, Piperâs hands come to the sides of Ellieâs face. âLook at me. Breathe in and out.â Piper mouthed. Her own hands trembled viscously against Ellieâs skin.Â
Ellie does what Piper asked. She breathed in and looked at her sister.Â
Click.Â
Ellie looked away. She saw the Clicker. Its arms twisted and fingers pointed sharp like claws. She saw the blood seeping from its mouth and the fungi that split apart itsâ skull. Ellie breathed out.Â
A simple breath. Thatâs all the Clicker needed to whip around towards Ellie. It screeched and reached out its hands. Joel was quick to aim his gun and shoot. The clicker screamed out in pain as bullet after bullet lodged into its stomach.Â
âRun!â Joel cried as he fought the Clicker.Â
Tess didnât hesitate to pull Ellie and Piper away from Joel and run. Another Clicker jumped out from behind the wall and growled at Tess who fired her own gun. She dragged the girls away in the other direction. Her head whipped back to shoot once more. A fatal mistake. Ellie tripped, causing Piper and Tess to come toppling over her. The Clicker charged them. Tess instinctively kicked a nearby stand over. The noise served as a distraction to allow the three of them to crawl away. Tess motioned for Piper to take Ellie and run, just as the Clicker learned of their deception. Tess pulled out her gun once more and shoots the Clicker, effectively leading it away from the girls.
Piper and Ellie do not dare stand up. They crawled under a nearby display case as chaos ensued around them. Shots were fired. Clickers screeched. Ellieâs breath grew heavy and tense as the sounds grew louder and more frequent.Â
Piper raised her hands to cover Ellieâs ears. âCalm down.â Piper mouthed. A hypocritical statement for Piperâs mind was in turmoil. She was just as helpless as she was that night in the mall.Â
FUCK. FUCK. FUCK. FUCK. FUCK. FUCK.
YOUâRE GONNA DIE. ELLIEâS GOING TO BE RIPPED APART.Â
CRASH!
Piper and Ellie jumped out of their skin. They collectively decided to move to another hiding place. The two carefully crawled across the floor. They froze at the sound of glass breaking. A Clicker ran past them roaring as it searched for them.Â
In the corner of her eye, Piper saw a display case. It was low and could cover her and Ellieâs bodies. She carefully moved towards the case. Ellie followed after her.Â
Click. Click. Click.Â
The Clicker was closer than ever. Piper could see the shadow of the creature inch closer and closer near the edge of the display case they were hiding behind. Suddenly Joel tapped on her shoulder. She had to cover her mouth before she yelped. Joel looked at Ellie and Piper and then at the Clicker on the other side of the display case.Â
âFollow me.â He mouthed and turned around on his heel.Â
Click. Click. Click.Â
Joel raised one foot and then another. His body was crouched low as he stepped in the opposite direction of the Clicker. Foot down. Foot up. Foot down.Â
Crack.Â
Then he was on the floor. Piper and Ellie were screaming as the Infected jumped on top of them. Their arms thrashed as the Clicker claws at Ellie. Itsâ mouth growled as a mix of saliva and drool dripped onto Ellieâs face. Piper cried out as she managed to lodge one of her arms on the Clickerâs neck and face. It began to snap itsâ jaw open and closed. The clenching of itsâ teeth pinched a chord in Ellieâs ears. Piperâs grip on the Clicker slipped. The creature fell onto Ellie, biting down. Piper cried out in pain as Joelâs gun fired. The Clicker turned its attention to Joel. It lunged at Joel knocking his gun away. Ellie froze as she saw Joel struggle. The Clicker growled and hissed fighting to rip into Joelâs skin.Â
BANG!
The Clicker fell still. Joel shoved the clicker off of him and looked up. It was Piper. In her hands, she held his gun. It was a perfect shot to the head.Â
A screeching appeared beside Piper as the other Clicker lunged at her. She jumped back and cried aloud in fear. The gun dropped to the floor in her moment of horror.Â
âRun, run!â Joel screamed. He shoved Ellie to the side and reached out for Piper. His hands grabbed onto the jacket she was wearing and pulled her out of the Clickerâs charge.Â
Suddenly, Tess appeared. She raised an axe and swung it at the Clicker. The weapon was now lodged into the Clickerâs neck. It howled in pain and turned to Tess, now preparing to jump at her.Â
Immediately, Joel retrieved his gun and raised the barrel. Locked. Loaded. Finger on the trigger. Fire!
Silence.Â
The Clicker dropped dead.Â
âYou all right?â Joel heaved. He had asked everyone in the room but his attention was directed to Tess who was on the floor holding her ankle in pain.Â
âTwisted ankle, but... yeah. You all right?â Tess asked.Â
âWell, I didn't shit my pants, soâŠâ Ellie said.Â
âPiper?â Tess inquired.Â
The teen was in shock. Her ears were ringing and there was a dull pain in her arm. She felt something warm trickle down her skin.
âPiper?â Tess asked again. Worry filled her voice.Â
âFuckââ Piper cried. She was looking at her arm. âI mean if it was gonna happen to one of us.âÂ
The group's eyes fell onto Piperâs arm. Where she had rolled back the sleeves of Joelâs jacket was a bite mark. It was bleeding profusely as Piper clutched the wound. Her whole body was shaking, and she bit her lip. The taste of copper and iron flooded her taste buds. Ellie seemed just as terrified. A fear both Joel and Tess chalked up to being attacked by two Clickers. An experience that a majority of people donât live to tell the tale of.Â
âHey...let's get the fuck outta here,â Tess muttered.Â
Joel nodded and looked around the room for the window that led to the rooftop. He found it already cracked open. Ellie was the first to step out onto the roof. Then Piper, Tess, and, lastly, Joel.Â
Tess groaned in pain as her ankle throbbed. Joel instructed her to sit down as he pulled off his backpack. He reached inside and pulled out bandages. He held them out to Piper who was still in shock clutching her bleeding arm.Â
âPut this around your arm,â He instructed her.Â
Piper looked at the bandages before taking them. âThanks.âÂ
Ellie stood near the ledge. âOver there?â She asked and pointed to the boardwalk that connected over the next rooftop.Â
Joel nodded, âYeah, I know. It looks scary.â
âThat was scary. This is wood.â Without another word, Ellie crossed the wooden plank and jumped onto the next rooftop.Â
Piper adjusted her backpack and gripped the bandage tightly as she walked across the plank of wood. They were high off the ground. One misstep and she would go tumbling down to the ground. But Ellie was right. The thought of that was nothing compared to the bloody mark on her arm.Â
âJust wait there. Give us a minute,â Joel called out.Â
Piper assumed he was gonna help Tess. She walked over to Ellie who stood staring at the view of the city in front of them. Piper silently observed her sister as she began to wrap her arm. Something she struggled with. The bandage never stayed in one place. Piper furrowed her brows in concentration.Â
âPipes,â a small voice whimpered. It was Ellie. She was crying as she looked at the bite mark on Piperâs arm.Â
Piper frowned and her lips trembled. âLook. Youâre immune, right? Weâre sisters, so Iâve got to be.â Piperâs sight grew blurry. âI justâ Just help me, please.â She raised her arm up as Ellie took the bandage from her hand.Â
Ellie snatched the bandage from Piperâs hand before fishing something out of her pocket. Piperâs face paled as she saw the silver blade fling to position. Ellie raised the knife over the palm of her hand.Â
âMy bloodâs the cure, right? Iâm immune so if I mix it with yours thenââ Ellie winced as the blade sliced into her hand. The silver knife drew across her skin before being closed and placed back into Ellieâs pocket. Then Ellie raised her hand over Piperâs arm, who was quick to draw it away.Â
Piper shakingly stuck out her arm again allowing Ellie to squeeze her hand shut over Piperâs arm. It was like juicing a lemon, as Ellieâs blood dripped onto Piperâs wound. Then for extra measures, Ellie took that very bloodied hand and proceeded to mix Piperâs blood with hers.Â
It had to work. Ellie knew that she was immune. It was in her blood. Thatâs what Marlene had told her. The cure was in her blood. So, if she put just enough of her blood in Piperâs system then Piper wouldnât turn. It had to work. It had to. Ellie didnât know what she would do without Piper. It was always Ellie and Piper until the end. The panic in Ellie grew as she gripped her sisterâs arm tighter as if she was afraid that if she let go Piper would disappear.Â
âEllie,â the panic as Piper's terror grew. âEllie thatâs enough!â
Ellie yanked her arm back and stood clutching her bleeding hand as her wide and trembling eyes glared at the bite mark on Piperâs arm. Her breaths were short, and tense and they grew quicker and more frequent with each second.Â
Piper shot her hands out and cupped her sisterâs face. âBreath. Iâm okay. Weâre okay. Iâve got you, Ellie,â Piper whispered to her sister.
Ellie was able to calm down enough to bandage her sister's wound. In turn, Piper tore off some of the fabric to tie it around Ellieâs cut. Ellie giggled as Piper kissed Ellieâs boo-boo. It was just like old times back in the QZ.Â
âWeâre okay. Weâre gonna be okay. Itâs you and me until the end.â Piper said as she wrapped an arm around Ellieâs shoulder and turned the two of them to face the view of the city. The calming scene was just what the girls needed to pull them out of the water threatening to drown them.Â
The afternoon sun cascaded down on crumbling Boston. The Capitol building shimmered like a lighthouse in the dark as the gold-tinted dome roof caught the warm light of the sun. The sky was a picturesque blue and there was hardly a cloud in sight. Occasionally the dark outline of a bird would fly into view above the buildings.Â
âIf I had a superpower, then I would be able to fly,â Ellie muttered as her brown eyes flowed the latest bird to grace their view.Â
âOh yeah?â Piper said as she pulled her sister in closer.Â
âYeah. Then Iâd be able to take you and weâd fly someplace safe. Somewhere there is no Infected. No FEDRA. No fireflies. Somewhere where itâs just me and you,â Ellie explained as she snuggled into her sister's side.Â
Then there was a shuffling behind them, and Joel and Tess appeared, finally catching up with the girls. Joel came to a stop next to Ellie. He crossed his arms over his chest and let out a deep sigh before glancing down at Ellie.Â
âIs it everything you hoped for?â
Ellie sniffled before answering Joel. âThe jury's still out. But, man, you can't deny that view.â Then Ellie smiled.Â
Joel furrowed his brows as his gaze softened. There was no malice or sassiness in Ellieâs voice as she answered. But then the girl smiled. It was a soft smile and not one that was noticeable. But it was a smile. An honest-to-God sweet smile.Â
Tess looked at the location of the sun in the sky before limping over to a ladder attached to the building. âC'mon, let's get there before it's dark.â
Tess raised her leg over the edge and began her descent down the ladder. Ellie stepped out from under her sisterâs arm before walking over to the ladder and climbing down after Piper.Â
Joel took a step forward, but something in him made him look back at Piper. There was a dullness in her eyes as she looked at the view. So unlike Ellieâs simple adoration for it. To Piper, the view was just a little greyer and darker too. It was as if her whole world was tinted. Cursed to dull and eventually fade away.Â
âYou good, kid?â Joel asked.Â
Piper took a moment to respond back. âNo.â Then she stepped forward and walked over to the ladder. Her figure descended from view.Â
Joel just stood there. His brown eyes fixed on the spot Piper once stood. It was only a ânoâ, yet Joel Miller was frozen in his step. It wasnât dullness in her eyes. No, it was defeat. It was the glance at a broken soul whose pieces have scattered so far and wide that there is only the hollowness of what once was.Â
Then Joel found himself glancing down. The broken glass of his watch gleamed in the sun. One thought alone was in Joelâs mind as he looked at the watch. One thought alone was in Joelâs mind as he climbed down the ladder.Â
ê§_____________ê§Â
The sun had begun its descent in the sky and the crickets decided to make an early appearance. They chirped as a light breeze danced through the long grass. The leaves rubbed together making a wave-like noise every time a gust of wind flew by. Tess, Joel, Piper, and Ellie stood behind a rusted old car that had spent too much time under the harsh gaze of the sun.Â
âWhere the fuck are they?â Tess harshly whispered to Joel.Â
Before them stood the Capitol building. The drop-off point. The place Marlene said a bunch from out west were. The Capitol was anything but alive. There was no sign of the Fireflies, except for a gigantic truck. A truck that looked entirely too new compared to the numerous rusted and crumbling cars that were scattered around the grounds.Â
Joelâs eyes narrowed on the truck as he stepped out from behind the car. âStay back,â he instructed.Â
The gravel crunched under Joelâs boots as he stalked towards the truckâs driver-side door. The door was slightly ajar which allowed Joel to pry it open with his gun. The leather seats were drenched with blood. Not a person in sight. Joelâs worry grew as he trekked around to the back of the truck before opening it as well. Empty.Â
âJoel? What the fuck is going on?â Tess said. She stepped out from behind the car and began to approach Joel. Her face fell upon seeing what Joel had found.Â
âI don't know,â Joel replied.Â
Ellie and Piper approached the truck as well. The two girls circled around to the other side looking for clues as to where the Fireflies could have gone.Â
Ellie gulped as she spotted a trail of blood leading into the Capitol building. âThey went inside,â she said. Piper came up next to Ellie. Her eyes followed along the blood trail.Â
âCome on,â Tess dictated as she grabbed Ellieâs sleeve and pulled her into the Capitol building.Â
Piper and Joel ran after Tess.
âTess!â Joel called out.Â
âCome on!â Tess hissed as she pulled Ellie along.Â
âTess!â Joel repeated.Â
The scene they had found inside the building was a massacre. Ellie was the first to enunciate what they were all thinking. âHoly shit.âÂ
Bodies lay along the marble floor. Some were shot, blood still oozing out of their deadly wounds. Others lay face up with their necks sliced open or knives gouged into their heads.Â
Ellie turned around taking it all in. She stepped closer to a particular body lying nearby. Joel tensed before pulling Ellie away from the body and into the centre of the lobby.Â
âOh, Jesus. Okay.â Joel looked around and caught sight of Tess. She was digging through the numerous crates and boxes that the Fireflies had kept in the building.Â
âI mean, there's gotta be a, a fuckin' radio or somethin', right?â Tessâs voice quavered.Â
âWho killed them? FEDRA?â Ellie looked at Piper as she said FEDRA.Â
Piper shook her head, but it was Joel who answered. âNo. One of them got bit. The healthy ones fought the sick ones. Everyone lost.â He stepped towards Tess whose movements got more and more frantic. âTess? What're you doin'?â
Tess turned on her heel and marched towards Ellie and Piper. On instinct, Piper grabbed Ellieâs sleeve and pulled her sister back behind her.Â
âWhere did Marlene say that she was taking you? Ellie! Piper!â Tess demanded.Â
Ellie shook her head. âUh, I don't know. Just west.â
âJust west. Fuck.â Tess ran her hands through her hair. Her fingers gripped tightly around her light brown locks. âOkay. Well, I mean, one of them's gotta have a map on them, right? Joel, can ya help me?â Tess walked over to one of the bodies and began searching the pockets.Â
âNo! Tess... it's over. We are going home,â Joel said. His voice began to fill with worry. The most emotion Piper and Ellie had ever heard from his voice.Â
âThat's not my fucking home!â Tess yelled. She glanced back at Joel. âI'm stayin'. I mean... our luck had to run out sooner or later.â Her voice faltered.Â
There it was. Defeat was embedded deep within Tessâs eyes. A lookâa feeling that Piper knew all too well. âFuck. She's infected,â Piper stated.Â
Joel looked back at Piper before returning his gaze to Tess. âShow me.âÂ
âJoel,â Tess stepped towards Joel, but he raised his gun at her. She let out a nervous chuckle. âOops, right?â Then Tess marched over to Piper pointing at her arm. âTake your bandage off,â Tess commanded.Â
Piper glanced at Joel before she lifted up her sleeve and removed her bandage.Â
Tess snatched Piperâs arm pulling it close to Joel. âLook.âÂ
Joelâs jaw clenched as he did as Tess told as did Piper. The bleeding had stopped and a layer of scab was growing over the wound. It was healing. Relief fell over Piper. She was immune. She was healing.Â
âJoel?â Tess caught Joelâs attention once more. âThis is real. Joel, she's fucking real. Theyâre realâŠâ Tess finally let go of Piperâs arm. âI need you to get her to Bill and Frank's.â
Joel shook his head. âNo.â
âThey'll take her off your hands,â Tess continued.Â
âNo.â There was desperation growing in Joelâs voice.Â
âThey'll handle it from here,â Tell told Joel.Â
âNo, no, no, I can't. They won't take her. They're not gonna take her,â Joel replied.Â
âThey will. They will 'cause you'll convince them.â Joel shook his head. âYes, you will. I, I never ask you for anything, not to feel the way I felt.â
Joelâs eyes began to water. His hands gripped his gun tighter as if it was his only lifeline. âNo.â
âShut the fuck up 'cause I don't have time.â She stepped close to Joel. âThis is your chance. You get them there⊠you keep them alive...and you set everything right. All the shit we did. Please say yes, Joel, please,â Tess begged.Â
Suddenly there was a snarling behind Piper and Ellie. The girls whirled around and cried out in fear. The dead never seemed to stay dead.Â
âOh fuck!â Ellie exclaimed.Â
Instinctively, Joel raised his gun. The trigger was pulled. The Infect collapsed to the floor. Its hand fell to the floor and then time froze.Â
Why hadnât he noticed it before? Joel scolded himself.Â
Thereâs a howl in the distance and it feels as if hell has descended upon them. Piper clutched Ellie close as the unanimous snarling from the distance filled their ears.Â
Joel ran over to the entrance of the Capitol building and stuck his head out the door. His face paled at the sight.Â
âHow many?â Tess asked.Â
âAll of them. Maybe a minute.â Joel closed the door and ran back to the group.Â
Tess ran to a nearby container before dumping its contents out. Yellow gasoline spilt across the pristine marble floor. The smell of petrol swarmed Piperâs sense of smell.Â
âWhat are you doing?â Ellie asked as Tess ran around the room dumping out the gasoline.Â
âMaking sure that they don't follow you.â Tess raised up a small lighter before turning to Joel. âJoel⊠save who you can save.âÂ
Joelâs whole body clenched tightly as his eyes said goodbye to Tess. He couldnât say it. She knew he couldnât. Then Joel listened. He did exactly what Tess told him to. He saved who he could save. His large shoot out to grab tightly onto the girlsâ arms before dragging them away.Â
Piper and Ellie look back helplessly at Tess. Ellie grunts and yells as she tries to fit Joelâs grip. She couldnât leave her mom behind.
âNo! We're not leaving her!â Ellie screamed.Â
Piper smiled sadly at Tess. Her brown eyes said thank you over and over hoping Tess knew. She did. Of course, Tess did. She was a mother after all.Â
âGet off me, you fucker!â Ellie began to hit Joel with all her might. But Joel was hardened to violence and pain. âPiper!â Ellie began to plead with her sister.Â
Piper shook her head before using her other arm to loop around Ellie and help Joel drag her out of the building. âEllie, we have to.â
Ellie cried out in frustration. âI'm not going with you!âÂ
Piper didnât exactly know when they exited the building. What she did know was about twenty seconds after, as Joel continued to haul Ellieâs thrashing figure into the field of tall grass, the building exploded.Â
Clouds of fire fumed out of the windows. Glass shattered. The ground trembled and then all was silent.Â
Ellieâs fight broke down. Joel let her go he watched as she scrambled forward her arms reaching out to the burning building before Piper stepped in her sisterâs path.Â
âEllie,â Piper soothed. Her hand reached up to wipe away her sisterâs tears.Â
âFuck you!â Ellie screamed as she shoved Piper to the ground.Â
âEllie!â Piper said, trying to stand back up to calm her sister down.Â
Ellie growled before jumping on top of her sister. This wasnât like their games where Piper was in control. Ellie was on top. Ellie was going to win. Her finger scrunched up and formed a fist. Then that fist flung through the air finding a place on Piperâs body. After the first punch came another. Then another.Â
Piper raised her arms up in defence. Her body squirmed under Ellieâs weight as she tried to get the upper hand, but Ellie gave her no such opportunity. Hit after hit Joel stood by and watched. He couldnât move. He couldnât speak, so he just let it happen.Â
Then there was a sickening crack as Ellieâs fist landed on Piperâs face. Blood trickled down Piperâs now broken nose. Ellie froze. Her knuckle felt warm with her sisterâs blood. Then Ellie was on the ground. Piper was on her feet clutching her nose in pain. Joel just looked at the teen as she tried to nurse her wounds.Â
Tears are falling down Ellieâs cheeks now. She doesnât feel them. All she can feel is the blood of her sisterâs body tainting her skin. She feels sick but there is nothing to puke up.Â
There was another crack and Piper winced in pain. Her nose adjusted; the blood was no longer spilt from her nose. She could breathe now, but the blood was in her mouth. She hated the coppery taste in her mouth that was becoming more and more frequent. Piper spat out the blood in her mouth. The red liquid mixed with her saliva as it hit the ground. Piper wiped her nose, her eyes on Ellieâs stilled figure.Â
She felt Joelâs eyes on her. Her dark eyes met him as she shoved her way past him. Piper began walking. She didnât care if she had no clue where she was supposed to go. All she could think of right now was getting away. Away from the burning building. Away from the terrors that crawled in her mind and scarred her soul. Away from Joel. Away from Ellie.Â
Joel let out a shaking breath before looking down at Ellie. He lowered his gaze to the ground. The earth beneath his boots rattled as Joel departed after Piper. He too needed to leave. He needed to leave before the sins of his past swarmed to the surface. So, he left.Â
Ellie was the last to move. Piperâs figure was now small in the distance. Joelâs figure was a couple of inches larger than her sisterâs. The blood on her knuckles ran cold. Ellie sniffled and wiped away the blood. Her hands found refuge in her jacket pockets as she took one step forward. One after the other. She was desertingâleaving a shell of herself behind in that burning building. Just like she left a part of herself in that mall with Rileyâs body. Just like she would continue to do for the rest of her life. Piper couldnât protect her anymore. No one could.Â
