Right now, sexual tension is what’s hot.  People need to not only relate to your characters, but be pulled in by the suspense of a complicated relationship.  They need to be able to live vicariously through your fiction.  If it makes you uncomfortable, just power through because this is what the people want and this is how you can make your story realistic.  If it makes your character’s uncomfortable, all the better because that will just add more drama.

Writing is an art and should therefore just flow from the insides of your being. If you have this need to add something really dramatic that defies the conventions of your novel go for it!  What are reader expectations anyway?
