Undocumentation—illegal residence in a country—can initially be easy to condemn. But the multimedia play "Undocumented," written by Filipino Katherine Chua, puts a personal perspective on the illegal immigration issue with the story of Frida, a 25-year-old young woman who has been in the United States since she was 8. As an undocumented immigrant, Frida faces deportation to the country of her birth. Yet her American upbringing has made this country her home.
The play reflects on the effects of impending legislation such as the DREAM Act, which would give undocumented immigrant students the opportunity to achieve citizenship. As she, like 2.1 million undocumented youth in America, waits on the act to become law, Frida must first solidify her own character.
"She's not sure if she feels like she's a criminal or a victim," Chua said in an introductory video.
"Undocumented" will be performed from Oct. 6-9 at the Shell Theater in the Times Square Art Building, 300 West 43rd Street (off 8th Avenue), 4th Floor (403), NY 10036.
Tickets are $15 at the door.
