237.130: The Essay Project
What is an Analytical Essay?
The overruling requirement of an analytical essay is the "critical examination" of the small components of a visual text (Clarke 151; Meirow), how these parts work to form a "cohesive whole" (Gentry). The essay is the synthesized result of previous research and evaluation of the visual text, as well as conforming to the demands of the assignment outline.
Unlike other essay types, which priorities include: explanation, persuasion of an external or personal opinion, an analytical essay examines and interprets in a detailed fashion (Access to English: Social Studies). While other essays will ask "what, when, and where?", analytic essays are discernable as they inquire "why and how?" (Skene 1).
Paramount on Access to English: Social Studies list of tips is organization; to maximise efficiency, they state to plan thoroughly (Access to English). Using present tense, it is also urged to be objective, and not use colloquial language (Clarke 147).
