I answer a lot of Asks here on Tumblr about Alexander, Macedonia, etc. Ever thought about making that formal and coming to UNO to study with me in the Ancient Mediterranean Studies Program?

Deadlines are approaching to apply to our history MA program (with funding), as well as general undergrad admission (with scholarships). If you’re graduating this spring, whether from college or high school, and mulling over your next step…and you love ancient history…this is the time. College transfers are also available.

I get questions about whether to pursue a career in history. While I’ve said (repeatedly) that going all the way to the PhD, with a shrinking job market, academia in crisis, and the future uncertain, isn’t wise, getting an MA is still a viable degree with alternative (non-academic) job prospects. Your only options are not teaching college, high school, or working in a museum. The FBI loves history majors, archives, national and state park service regularly hire history majors, state jobs, police detectives, and even industries want history majors for their analytical skills.

The University of Nebraska-Omaha has been adjusting our program to professionalize MA students for this diverse job market, including a variety of internship opportunities.

You don’t have to live in Nebraska or risk outrageous tuition. Right now, due to Covid, UNO is offering a number of incentives for non-Nebraska (and international) residents, and our tuition is already lower than many other states.

If you think…Nebraska? Are you kidding me? Do you ride to work on your horse through corn fields?

Omaha is a modern city, guys. More, it’s a Democratic city, especially east of 72nd Street. Omaha (District 2) gave Biden an electoral college vote because Nebraska splits theirs. We have a world class zoo (no joke), museums, a cool Old Market downtown, a really vivid music scene (especially for blues), and a shocking number of restaurants of all sorts (not just Italian or Chinese or [awesome] Mexican, how about Ethiopian, Argentinian, Tajik, Persian…). And yes, there is an active LGBTQI community. Add to that a low cost of living.

I was, honestly, shocked when I moved here. It’s not at all what I expected, and I’ve found I really like the place, despite occasional frustration with our annoying governor.

So, FEBRUARY 1 is the deadline for applying to the program with funding (e.g, for consideration for a graduate assistantship). May 15th is the date for regular admission.
