Emotions under(the)ground
London is a city that is associated with glitz, wealth, glamour, fame, affluence, and everything “wicked” in life! For many people this city is a dream destination – a bucket list item. You can see it when you walk by tourists taking pictures in front of tourist attractions such as Big Ben, London Eye, or Tower Bridge. Their eyes are filled with wonder and their expression shouts out - "I had always dreamt of coming here!!" Personally though, the city is a bit intimidating for a small town boy like me. Since I come from a place where everyone seems to know what the family next door has had for breakfast, a city where a person does not know what their own flat-mates had for breakfast because there simply isn't enough time for either party to enquire into the well-being of the other is quite a change. The other aspect that makes London intimidating though, is the sheer size of the city! All things considered, London is a massive, gargantuan, beast of a city. Fortunately, the one tool that Londoners have to tame this beast is the Underground. The Underground reminds me of Falkor the luckdragon from “The Neverending Story”. Don’t worry if you just asked yourself “the what??” – its an old film and a luckdragon looks nothing like a dragon but more like a dog AND can fly. (What’s more interesting is that wiki labels luckdragon as a species!!!) Long story short – the Underground helps people get around!!
However, that is not why I find the Underground interesting. I can easily understand why the thoroughly fascinating infrastructure and engineering marvel can make some of my engineer friends have an orgasm(per se), but what fascinated me about the Underground is the stories of thousands and thousands of lives that, for the duration of an individual’s journey, gets locked up within the confines of the tube. If you observe really carefully, you can see everything good and bad about human beings within the tube. Love, anger, hope, solitude, company, excitement, fatigue, lust, concern, humanity, consideration, inconsideration – you get to see everything! All you need to do is look up and observe. It did not take me long to realise that these contrasting aspects of human life fascinated me and I decided to capture these moments and write about them. So this blog are all the stories that I notice in the tube or instances that force me to think about humans and our inexorably complicated lives. I hope the few people who make the mistake of reading this blog (a group that I am pretty certain will include no one but my very close friends) can find some semblance of quality hidden somewhere deep (and I mean very deep) within the posts over the coming weeks, months, and years.
