Book of the Week 8/15/16
Hello again, people of Tumblr! Hope you’re ready for the second week of Book of the Week! And the book this week is...
The Witch Hunter by Virginia Boecker!
So, I talked about this book a bit ago when discussing book covers, and after finishing the sequel, I just knew I had to talk about it here. So, to begin with, I’ll give you guys a rundown of the book. The Witch Hunter focuses on a young Elizabeth Grey, who is one of the King’s top witch hunters. Her job was to find people who practiced witchcraft, which has been deemed illegal due to a horrid plague that had swept the world after a witch had cursed the land. She hates witches beyond all belief, until the day she is accused of being a witch herself, and is sentenced to death by burning. She is rescued by her once-enemy, Nicholas Perevil. He is known as the most powerful and most dangerous wizard in history. He saves her under the condition that she will break the curse that has been set upon him. Now she has to decide if she wants to help him, and risk revealing she is a witch hunter, or if she wants to sneak away and turn him in to try and redeem herself.
So, what made me personally love this book? Well, to be fair, I picked it up just bored and looking for something to read to keep myself busy. I didn’t think it would be that great, an average book amongst millions of others. I was wrong. I was sooooo wrong. Virginia does something with these characters that just makes you fall in love again and again. Elizabeth is selfless, loyal, someone you just fall in love with despite her mistakes. I love this girl, and that doesn’t always happen in novels. Then there’s the cast of supporting characters, and let me tell you, they are just absolutely without a doubt perfect. Between John and Caleb, and Nicholas and George and just everyone, gah! John is by far one of my favorite characters EVER and I love the dynamics of his personality, especially switching from book one to book two, which I cannot tell you why because MAJOR SPOILERS. But seriously, I love his kind heart, and the fact that he doesn’t let his deep bias ruin what he feels is the right thing to do. He’s just so amazing you guys. AND DON’T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON SCHUYLER. He makes me laugh, and he is just such a wonderful comic relief to the story. Seriously, I would recommend this book just for his presence. Like he’s just the frosting on the cake, but he’s the best damn frosting in the world! And you completely fall into the book. Towards the climax, I was one with Elizabeth- I thought I knew it. I really did. I thought I predicted the entire thing. She completely took me by surprise, which so does not happen often enough.
This world she has created is by far one of my favorites, and I wish I could explore it for real. The land of magic, meeting the different creatures who all have different sides to them than Elizabeth was expecting. You completely learn not to stereotype others, and to keep an open heart about what is coming next. This book has given me some great lessons, and by far a favorite read.
Guys, please please please go give this book a chance. I had never heard of it before, and it deserves so much more hype. If you like awesome writing, amazing characters, incredible fantasy, and some gooey romance, with character development that leaves you breathless, CHECK THIS BOOK OUT. And then talk to me about it. I don’t have enough book buddies.Â
