i like how Vegeta saved Gohan from dying from Final Form Frieza's attack and said he didn't do it to help him, he had just wanted to flex in response to Gohan's gratitude. Like yeah okay Vegeta, whatever you say. A real Aura Farmer tryna flex would've either tanked it or deflected the attack, not fly halfway across the battlefield to throw someone to the ground with a warning to save their life. (And while not being strong enough at the time to physically help, he had still tried to warn Gohan to dodge Second Form Frieza's attack)
This combined with the fact he never actually beat the shit out of Gohan post-Namek on Earth while the kid was still mourning over Goku in the manga, makes Vegeta the best he could've been while at his worst. He treated Gohan the best a genocidal, egotistic royal prince probably could've ever bothered to. Yes he kneed Gohan and stepped on his head in their first Namek meeting but also he's an asshole and it was a "message" to give to Goku.
I love how he later grew to respect and repeatedly praise Gohan's abilities despite his far younger age. Vegeta's apologized only like twice in the series and one of those times was to Gohan, pleading for forgiveness for being the reason he got severely hurt during such an important battle (the Cell Games). But Gohan was just returning the favor for what he did for him with Frieza.
With how he was almost kinda but not really there for him during the years Goku stayed dead makes him almost like a not-great and barely present uncle that Gohan never asked for, but since he's marginally better than his actual uncle, he's still happy about it at times. Vegeta would never appear to be there for him, but would likely not turn him away should Gohan appear (post Cell). Big fan of these two's relationship and I wish I could find more food of it. I love fucked up, barely passable not-family dynamics.
