Farmers went to the king asking for help. The king decided to build this palace so that they would have a job to do. Like most, I had the question - why not just give them money. It would only solve one problem - money. A jobless person with money would turn to alcohol or other things he shouldn't be spending money on during a famine. A part of the palace is managed by Taj Hotels. Named after Maharaja Umaid Singh, grandfather of the present owner Gaj Singh. The palace has 347 rooms and is the principal residence of the former Jodhpur royal family. A part of the palace is a museum.
