"A bolt shell in the dark of night is worth ten in the light of day." -Gesith Battle Leader Guthrum Langstrid, of the Greymanes 9th Company, cognomen "Black Hounds". Guthrum Langstrid is an old veteran of the Indomitus Crusade, one of the initial cadre of Fenrisian-born Primaris Space Marines who formed the Greymanes. Aloof and calculating, he has always stood apart from the mass of his brothers. His preference for covert operations, too, is at odds with the overt nature of the Greymanes' usual strategies. However, these are qualities perfect for a leader of the Shadow Companies. Under Eadred Thann, Aetheling of the Hounds, Guthrum has found a place as the left hand of the Cyning, striking at their foes unseen.

The twin Shadow Companies serve a twofold purpose within the Greymanes Chapter. First and foremost, they serve to blood new recruits. Under the tutelage of pack leaders who are hardened veterans of guerilla warfare, Neophytes learn to conduct small-unit actions and become practiced at reconnaissance, sabotage, and assassination. While the Canis Helix naturally makes the average Neophyte an impetuous and battle-lusting sort, stark discipline is imposed upon them during their time here. They will, as Aetheling Aedred Thann of the Black Hounds is fond of saying, live obeying their orders or not at all. Secondly, the Shadow Companies serve as the chapter's special operations arm. The 9th Company, currently possessing the cognomen "Cauldron of Arawn", is where the majority of the Chapter's Wolf Scouts reside. Answering directly to the Cyning, they serve as reavers and killers. While there is a distaste for this bloody work amongst the rest of the Greymanes, they all recognize that the intelligence and disruption of enemy capabilities provided by the Neophytes and Wolf Scouts of the Shadow Companies is invaluable.

Gesith Battle Leaders are the most trusted out of all their Aetheling's warriors. Elevated from the ranks of his Gesith or warrior-retinue, they function as subsidiary battlefield commanders. They speak their lord's will and edicts as a matter of fact, for they are almost of one mind, such is their unity of purpose and thought. And if he commands it, they will sell their lives for him. Such is the bond between lord and retainer. Gesith Battle Leaders are not merely alpha predators. It is to them to be the martial exemplars of their company, knights armoured in contempt for their foes. They do not despise or even hate the enemy. No, such things are beneath them. Rather, they take sober stock of the foe - and then direct their subordinates to destroy them.

The halyrood is a potent symbol in the New Albian milieu. It is, quite plainly, the symbol of the ultimate sacrifice - that of a retainer for his lord. Only the most elite of Greymane warriors are entitled to wear this symbol. Many Imperial clerics have noted the similarities between the Halyrood's various forms and the Terminator Honor. As it is demonstrably older than the latter, they theorize that both symbols derive from a ancient, heathen faith lost to history. The lore for this symbol is drawn from the mythology surrounding the Anglo-Saxon rood, or cross. Specifically, it is meant to be the cross on which Jesus was crucified. Y'know, a little thing like that. As depicted in the poem Dream of the Rood, the rood was not so much a implement of torturous death as it was a loyal and noble retainer, accompanying his lord through that torturous death. I felt this was a thematic thing for the Greymanes. The "heathen faith", if it isn't clear, is Christianity. In the grimdarkness of the far future, Jesus and his word have both been cast to oblivion by the purges of the Emperor and the ignorance of the Imperium. And that's a loss, isn't it? Whether you're a non-believer or believer, you can agree that much is lost with the obliteration of Christian, or rather Catheric faith. So divorced are the Greymanes from their ancestors, they no longer recognize a Christian cross for what it is. They dimly know it represents sacrifice, the ultimate sacrifice even, but they don't know whose sacrifice. I'll leave you with a quote. Forget the power of technology and science, for so much has been forgotten, never to be re-learned. Forget the promise of progress and understanding, for in the grim dark future there is only war. There is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter, and the laughter of thirsting gods.

Where present, devices are usually highly personal. A marker of some great and heroic deed may be worn, or perhaps a visible reflection of an epithet.There are of course exceptions. A common honor marking is for Indomitus Crusade veterans to wear some marker of their service as a Greyshield. This can take many forms - a grey chevron, the symbol of Battlegroup Antares, etc.

The Wolf Knights are the Greymanes' elite of the elite. A secret order within the Kingsguard, they fight exclusively atop Thunderwolves. A large proportion of their ranks are Fenrisian warriors bequeathed unto the Chapter by Logan Grimnar himself. Though some New Albians can be found amongst their number, they are few and far between. That said, the Wolf Knights steep themselves heavily in New Albian tradition and mores. Wolf Knights typically fight where the foe's line is weakest. Crashing their terrifying mounts into the foe's flanks and rear, they tear into them with savage fury. A single, cutting blow, they wholeheartedly believe, is enough to win battles in one stroke. The Knights of Kamahaloth understandably use their Wolf Knights sparingly. Cyning Njord Greymane is loath to sell their lives in vain. He instills this fact into every Greymanes commander he lends them to.
