Approximately 4,000 of the 40,000 deaths in the UK in 2019 were due to pollution from vehicles, and they occurred in Greater London and to address the issue The Mayor of London announced the ULEZ in April 2019 with the primary objective of improving air quality by reducing the number of vehicles in the city that do not meet emissions standards.

Since its introduction, air pollution in central and inner London has been drastically reduced thanks to the ULEZ. The Mayor aims to put all of London on the road to becoming a pollution-free city by expanding those benefits to residents of outer London.
