Every year, from mid-January to the beginning of March, the Utah State Legislature convenes to discuss how the limited dollars the State of Utah possesses will be spent. Topics of importance are always education and transportation, and this year, clean air, and the governor’s Healthy U plan which is an alternative to Medicaid expansion, are also hot topics of debate. In the spirit of helping to create an informed electorate and informed legislature, every year the Legislative Coalition for people with Disabilities sets up the chance for people with disabilities and their allies to come together with their elected representatives to discuss those issues that matter most to them.
Legislators make decisions based on a number of criteria, but not the least of which is voter engagement in a topic. At a recent LCPD meeting, it was revealed that legislators are not hearing from constituents about things like Medicaid Expansion. Media coverage can only push so much. This annual reception is a chance to meet face-to-face with legislators and help to shape policy for the upcoming year.
