Your Forma Episode 7 Review - Cat Lovers, Stay Away
If you’re an ardent cat lover, do not watch this episode. Close the tab and run away from this anime as far as you can. While Ganache’s body isn’t found, it’s still cruel what they did to it. And I know exactly who did this and who’s working for E: it’s Raissa. Why? Because she’s French…and the obvious choice.
Though, I’m a little confused about something. Wasn’t Echika transferred to another division? Yet, she’s still able to investigate the happenings around E with Harold as if she got reinstated. I guess that’s allowed? But if the story made it seem as if Echika was losing her powers and got transferred to another branch, they should stick to it. The branch transfer just feels like needless decoration. Still, at least the incident with the bomb helped the leads finally open up to each other and for Echika to learn that her abilities have gone down on purpose—as if someone was targeting her intentionally.
It was surprising to see Harold go against the Laws of Respect and use a gun because he cared about Eshika’s safety. As it was established that Amicus Robots aren’t actually programmed to follow the law but rather follow it because they were told to do so, it was interesting to see Harold act upon his own free will and break the law because he cared.
It’s nice to see Echika and Harold finally getting back together after two episodes of being divorced. I still think it was a weird choice to have this arc around this point and not do too much with it. It felt like it was just there for shock and drama factor. Echika’s powers decreasing and being told that she may not recover them again only for that plot point to be countered with Bigga having the solution also felt very low-stakes overall. Let me know your thoughts on this episode!

Apparently, the animation production staff pulled a very ballsy move to exclude the contents of the first volume to start with the events of the second one. This is definitely going to be a hit or miss depending on how it plays out, but I do feel like it’s leaning towards a miss. Taking out the first volume means you are already taking out the world building and character backstory. How am I supposed to know who Echika and Harold are if the story just drops the two going on a shopping mall date with a random brunette girl?
This can also hurt the adaptation because taking out the first volume means that it’s alienating newcomers from being able to understand what’s going on. Heck, it’s already convincing me to buy the light novel series just so I can know who all these people are. Who the heck is Darya? Who the heck is Sozon? The story apparently knows but I don’t!
From what I can gather, Your Forma is about Echika Hieda, who is an investigator for this cyberpunk, high-technological world where androids called Amicus linger about. Amicus are incredibly intelligent androids that can function like humans and even have their own rights. Echika is partnered up with an Amicus named Harold and the two go on investigations together. However, I don’t know if Echika is a human because she has this ability called Brain Dive where she attaches a cord onto her nape and is able to dive into a person’s memories or dreams to see past events. In fact, I don’t understand how this world works because everything can be seen as holograms through the naked eye, but how that’s possible is never told. How can Echika make a phone call with her mind and have the caller be a hologram? Anyways, apparently, Echika needs a partner who can help her with Brain Dive and that’s how Harold came to be as they’re compatible despite being of two different species.
The reason I chose to watch this is because of the sci-fi vibes. I am writing a sci-fantasy story myself and watching shows like Your Forma can really help bring out my creative juices and motivation. The anime feels like a mix of Psycho-pass in terms of setting, The Case Study of Vanitas in terms of the Brain Dive segment, and other sci-fi stories.
I also feel like Gene Studio is also risking this anime production on the fandom and with their voice casting as married couple Kana Hanazawa and Kensho Ono voice the leads, reprising their roles from the novel’s PV. I do admit that the voice casting is probably one of the anime’s strongest suits because you can hear the romantic chemistry between these two. There’s just something spectacular about having a married couple voice the leads. I think another instance of a seiyuu power couple voicing leads is Kenichi Suzumura and Maaya Sakamoto in The Garden of Sinners series, but I don’t know if they were married before or after that… Echika and Harold have chemistry, but it’s definitely going to be a complex relationship as Amicus live differently from humans and Echika has her own baggage to deal with.
The supporting cast is basically a powerhouse cast with talents like Aya Endo and Nao Toyama voicing Totoki and Bigga and also rising stars like Ayaka Nanase as Darya and Jin Ogasawara as Angus. It’s a nice balance, especially given the leads are huge names too.
I guess I’ll try to stick around until the third episode mark to see if I should or shouldn’t drop the show because I don’t want to continue being confused when I watch something. If you’re watching this anime, let me know your thoughts whether it be in the comments or on my Straw Page (I’m ecargmura there).
