💎 💕 🎥 for half-life, soma, and outlast for the media hyperfixation ask game? :] (respectively or all of them, whichever you want XD)
Ask me about my fixations and I will be more than willing to write a whole essay on them! All of them it will be of course! ouo
💎 Are there any fun facts or trivia that you would like to share?
Half-Life: In the first Half-Life game, certain enemies like the bullsquid react to smell coming from other dead enemies or, in a specific instance, meat. There’s a whole video on this on Youtube if you are curious. It’s really cool how much thought was put into the A.I then.
SOMA: While I haven’t seen it for myself in my playthrough, the small robot at Delta, K8, will actually save you from dropping into the abyss once if you happen to fall off. K8 is baby! I also like how Simon talks to K8 as if to a dog :3
Outlast: There was originally supposed to be a brief dialogue between Trager and Langen before he kills him where Langen tries to rat out Miles to him. At least as far as I know. Some cut lines of Trager’s in this regard are featured in the few compilations that exist of his dialogue/monologue.
💕 Tell us about one of your favorite characters and why you like them!
Half-Life: The G-Man! Enigmatic, powerful, and wonderfully eerie. The fact that we know close to nothing about him, really, makes a huge part of his charm. At the same time, the games manage to effectively paint this image of a powerful entity that has its hands deep in everything that’s happening with the few, yet memorable scenes he appears in, including the G-Man sightings while you progress in the games. He appeals to my love of cosmic horror.
SOMA: My fav in this game has to be Terry Akers. I honestly like all characters in this game, but Akers definitely left an impression on me among the antagonists. The whole set-up at Site Delta to the encounter with him, the way his story can be uncovered by exploring the Site, is really well-done and successful at building up a certain dread the closer you get to Theta. His concept as someone having gone mad from isolation and now striving to lock everyone in a lucid dream state in his worship of the WAU is also fairly interesting. I like the (cut) voice lines; and he’s certainly also one of the most terrifying enemies you encounter in the game.
Outlast: You know the answer to this one XD Trager still remains my fav for his odd charisma coupled with being a very memorable, terrifying enemy in the game. He creates the impression that he is still somewhat lucid, but at the same time you can certainly see how the Engine has impacted him, mentally and physically. His story as an executive used as a test subject is still interesting as well.
🎥 Do you have any favorite scenes from your hyperfixation?
Half-Life: All G-Man “cutscenes”, essentially. It’s especially interesting because Valve follows a strict rule of not including cutscenes in their games. All instances of character dialogue/interaction remain interactive, and it works. The G-Man scenes after HL1 differ from this somewhat in that your controls are being limited at best, and it serves to show just how much control he has over your character. Gameplay-wise, any “scene” where Alyx accompanies Gordon. I like her presence :3 In HL1, I also like the tentacles segment.
SOMA: Every time Catherine is in a position to talk to you. The game is good at making you feel lonely, given the situation/world, and hearing Cath is just soothing. Site Delta as a whole, Theta as well for reasons mentioned above. Site Theta also reveals some interesting plot points.
Outlast: The “controlled helplessness” of the Trager cutscene obviously. Trager’s dialogue remains memorable and nice to listen to. Even if it ends with Miles losing his fingers. :P
I could say a lot more, but this should be sufficient for now XD Thanks so much for the ask!
