How any years had it been now? Five? Six? Long enough that the deep breathing of the boy next to her had long since been forgotten, that much was true. If anything the way it whistled slightly under the whisper of the radio playing some mainstream trash soothed the woman enough that the pain in her thigh seemed to melt away.
They’d been traveling together — working together for long enough that it was almost as if they could have been an odd sort of family. He was a jerk from time to time, sure, but nothing worse than that. The kid had undeniable skill and the reaction times of a cobra. It was impressive, even for a more seasoned hunter such as herself. In fact, she was proud of him, really.
That was why they were headed to this town, this stupid little town in the middle of nowhere. They were going to take the week off, eat some soul food and sweets, sleep in, and just relax while her leg healed. Give the poor boy some normalcy that wasn’t living and killing with some weird chick she was sure he loved at least a little bit. But first, they’d stay the night in a sleazy motel and finish the trip tomorrow so she didn’t fall asleep behind the wheel.
Black tipped fingers poked at a paler cheek, lips tilted up in a grin.
“Wakey-wakey, kiddo.”
