jieun tl;dr:

the family unit fractures when her mom walks out on her dad. the quiet ending to a tumultuous relationship. jieun spends the better part of her teen years picking up the household slack. it makes her conscientious and prone to smothering people, but also the type to have too much on her plate while refusing to share the load.

that type of upbringing has consequences: namely, being a bit of a wild kid when she could let loose. picked up poor habits like people pick up hobbies; typical teenage dirtbag stuff despite her ~good girl~ image. most likely dipped her toes into the club/underground scene young, first as an attendee before she finally took main stage.

not to be sentimental, but music was her axis growing up. partly out of necessity, partly as an escape. her dad is a fairly successful music supervisor/director - bonding time was at-home piano lessons and imparting musical wisdom. she has picked up only a little, but it still feels like a lot.

before ctrl, was a drifter in the underground scene - was more of a songwriter/lyricist than anything. people asked her for her opinions and she’s never afraid to give one (when it comes to a song, at least).

as of 2016, is ctrl’s bassist & songwriter and a freelancer. is eternally grateful she actually enjoys her job.

has never forgiven her mom for walking out on them; her younger sister maintains a relationship, which (in jieun’s opinion) is probably why jihye is fake as fuck and toxic to no end. for some reason, they keep calling her to meet up these days - she is disinclined to answer, but they’re wearing her down.

personality-wise, jieun is: sweet in nature, indulgent in excess, a mother hen. personable but guarded, but once she likes you she will fight for you to the death. type of person to fall into very deep loves. type of person that is attracted to ‘fixer-uppers’. will never learn not to keep her heart on her sleeve.

001 / All she wanted was an exposé, a breakthrough, something to get her name on the radar. MUSE gave her want she wanted, but at the expense of their own heart. Long story short, she only dated them because RiTZ wanted an exclusive with them, and she was determined to be the first to get it, regardless of the hearts she has to trample on her way. (Muse has to be in the scene for awhile. They dated/were flings when she was just starting out at RiTZ, probably somewhere between 2018-2019.)

002 / You'd think someone like Yena wouldn't have problems getting a feature with anyone. She's charming, intelligent and incredibly good with her words, could probably convince anyone in the room—except MUSE. This might just be the biggest challenge of her writing career but Yena's no quitter. She won't stop at anything, not until she gets the story she's pining after. Unfortunately for her, it seems like MUSE plans to make her work for it too. (Muse has to be at the peak of their career, probably 4 stars or more.)

003 / New meat. That's what MUSE is to her. An up and coming star she has her eyes on, the protagonist of her next feature that will set the scene by storm. MUSE could be eager to give her what she wants (after all, it'll do them good to get some exposure), or they could be hiding something they don't want her to find out (usually, this intrigues her even more). (Muse has to be new to the scene.)

004 / The one ex that mattered. It started out the same way: she approached MUSE only to find out more about them, get some material for the magazine and maybe fuel the idealist in her by dating a musician. Except, it didn't end there. It should've, but this time, she couldn't bear to leave first. God forbid she actually fell in love—it's something she's still in denial about to this day. Regardless, it did not end well. MUSE found out about why she approached them in the first place and the rest is history. (Angst, angst and a lot of angst. Put simply: messy breakup, leftover feelings, and love turned hatred.)

005 / Yena thinks she's got MUSE wrapped around her finger. What she doesn't know is, they are using her just as she is using them. Both of them want the same thing—an exclusive with RiTZ. MUSE wants a piece that would put them in good light, but as long as Yena is concerned, where's the fun in that? A tale of mutual manipulation, neither stopping until they get what they want. (More details need to be fleshed out with mun.)

006 / A character like Yena's isn't loved by many. MUSE happens to be one of them. However, they know a good feature by her will do their career wonders. This leaves them in a moral dilemma—to do as they wish with no regards for what she thinks (and the thousands who will read it), or to swallow their pride and get on her good side? (Envisioning a lot snake energy for this, could also take a positive turn.)

007 / Yena and MUSE met as strangers on the dance floor, hooked up and never saw each other again. Years later, they meet again. Except this time, Yena's interviewing them for a feature with RiTZ. It might be a little late but at least they'll learn other's name this time. (Could've happened somewhere between 2014-2017.)

008 / Yena is brutal in her writing. Two reasons: she believes her readers deserve nothing but the truth and well, she’s a bitch. MUSE and/or their music was the subject of her latest critique piece. How they took it was the least of her concerns, but it could end two ways: 1) they took it personally or 2) brushed it off without a care. Either way, she has her eyes on their next release. Will they prove her wrong and earn a spot in her monthly recommendations, or will they simply give her another opportunity to say “I told you so”? (Yena’s a bitch and you’re welcome to hate on her.)

i’m a sucker for antagonistic plots and moon has a personality that can easily cause…conflict. so anything rooted in some kind of problem that blows up, or a long-time grudge, or a short-time grudge, or anything that involves someone punching him in the face i am down for.

friendships that feel a little one sided. can go either way, really, depending on circumstances. either moon doesn’t afford them as much attention as he could, or he decides to fixate on them and invests too much into the friendship.

he also gets jealous easily, so despite him pretending that he’s just Too Good For Fame he doesn’t actually think that at all and might act like a dick to someone hitting above his average within their music scene depending on their interactions or how well/not they mesh.

alternatively, will definitely try to leverage Their fame to help him. he is on instagram Way too much and he Will try and sneak his face onto other people’s feeds. moon Loves having fake friends when it can further his own career.

moon is/was very much a serial dater so if anyone wants an ex plot we can see if they would’ve dated, but i have a feeling it’ll have ended poorly. like i said, self-obsessed, likely was a trash bf once the honeymoon phase wore off. he tends to ignore any and all red flags in the self-proclaimed name of love. can be one of those people who goes from 0 to 100 way too fast. can also disengage just as fast if he decides he’s over it, so there’s really a lot of ways things could have collapsed spectacularly. girl or guy is fine, he’s into anyone that’s pretty, tho usually goes for people older than him. he doesn’t like the expectation that he should have to take care of Anyone other than himself. i’m open to current feelings for each other, neutral or friends or hatred etc.

people he vibes with music-wise, who he enjoys throwing ideas back and forth with or kind of hanging out and jamming around together.

i’m pretty flexible plots wise, i just do prefer things seeped in drama, angst, antagonism, etc. mun is pretty High Energy, High Emotion and he does Poorly when someone isn’t giving him their full attention or acts too cool to be around him, he’ll just dramatically exit and never return.

i think the tl;dr version of her bio that i have linked is enough to describe her basic background, but here’s a rundown of her personality!

she’s been through so many up’s and down’s in her life already (went from being overly coddled to completely abandoned by her mother in terms of affection) that she’s very stoic and collected. no big jumps in emotions and virtually appears to be a very calm person most of the times

very concerned about her looks (especially her hands). will dress preppy which doesn’t always fall in line with what people probably imagine when it comes to a keyboardist lol but she likes looking pretty and doting on herself. self-care is the first step to loving yourself, am i right??? 

to add onto the first point, she probably also appears to be pretty emotionless like you can’t... tell what she’s feeling because she always just looks like she’s going through a hard time. closed-mouthed smiles so looking like the :] emoji most of the time is kind of her thing 

to people whom she eventually ends up becoming ~friends~ with, she becomes a little more childish?? again, she was the youngest in her family so she’s used to sort of cuddling up to people and receiving rather than giving. she likes being taken care of and likes having people check up on her; she’s not so Great at doing that herself

family’s pretty well off and even though her parents don’t speak to her much, they never cut her off financially so she like... has never truly struggled in her life? yeah, she had to go through the emotional process of basically being dumped by her mother after she failed to become a worldwide pianist, but she’s materialistically never had to really struggle. even her part-time job at a nail salon is mostly because she Enjoys that line of work and loves talking to random strangers as she does their nails. i can see her being naive to certain real life problems because of that 

otherwise, if you catch her performing at some club or just roaming around at night, she’s not too difficult to hit up a conversation with. she finds it easier to open up to complete strangers, and she’s bold with her words lol not the kind of daughter you would have imagined from a family of classical musicians!!! 

potential plot ideas?? super short, but these are more like bases we could bounce off of!!

it’d be rare but if anybody was ever interested in classical music, i don’t think her name would be unknown. she Was once considered to be a rising star in korea when it came to the piano so maybe your muse oddly knows who she is... or who she used to be lol 

would love love to plot out dynamics between band members <3 daeun doesn’t consider any of you anything more than groupmates, but she does find comfort in the idea of being a Part of something, especially something that she stepped into herself

her background means that she’s a very skilled keyboardist and i imagine she isn’t some power vocalist but rather someone who relies on her vocal tone?? this is all to say that hey.... daeun might appreciate if you say you’re a fan. you don’t even have to be a fan of the group, just her

001.  when creating hwang mido, i took a lot of inspiration from a girl i once worked with for a winter. though we didn’t know one another for long, i’ve always been really inspired by her, and she’s genuinely one of the coolest people i’ve ever met. aside from that, there’s a dash of luna lovegood personality-wise, and the rest is mostly just me filling in any gaps. she’s a dreamy mystic who loves talking to people, asking weird questions, ignoring boundaries, and living her witchy fantasy. she’s a muse i’m really excited to watch grow during the writing / plotting process!

002.  she grew up in gurye county, south korea, but spent a lot of time in namwon, too, so she considers both of them her hometown. her grandparents are pansori performers, and she was constantly in attendance, so that’s where she first began to admire music and the performing arts in general. today, she utilizes the storytelling of pansori but adds a modern twist—focusing more on heartfelt lyrics and simplicity rather than over-the-top production value / technically strong vocals.

003.  unbeknownst to her at the time, her mother suffered from postpartum psychosis after birth, and only a few months into her newborn’s life, she left this realm and entered the wild, expansive cosmos. her decision obviously devastated family and friends, but it also made them feel shameful due to how she chose to make her exit. mido’s family decided to keep everything a secret for many years.

004.  when a classmate’s mother let it slip that that’s what happened to her, kids at school began to alienate her. they called her cursed, a witch, and a demon—literally believing that being her friend would lead to their deaths, too. middle and high school weren’t easy, and she grew to resent her family after finding out about her mother in the hallways at school, of all places. she still deals with that trauma.

005.  she “ran away” from gurye when she was nineteen; not bothering to finish high school. she’d made friends online via soundcloud after posting some covers there. they convinced her to move to seoul and steep herself in the indie music scene. she heeded their advice. it was hard at first. she gave tarot readings curbside and busked for a long time before finding a lover ( possible connection ! ) who took her under their wing and truly helped her find her footing in the city.

006.  when she’s in love, she dissolves into her partners; often mirroring their interests and changing herself in order to be more desirable to them. she does with friends, too. she likes to consider herself adaptable and interchangeable, but it can definitely read as artificial, or like she’s trying too hard. all the bullying she faced gave her a desperate need to fit in, so she does all she can to do just that.

007.  remember the lover from two points up ? yeah, she cheated on them a few different times, and also would get really messy at the clubs in hongdae. she was so new to all of it; having been so sheltered in a small town as a kid. she loves feeling good and having a good time, and she hates confrontation / making people upset, so she’d say yes to everything. she really loves the highs that drugs give her, the buzz alcohol creates, and the pleasure sex brings. she’s indulgent in that way.

008.  she hasn’t spoken to her lover and their mutual friends in ages, and took time away to sorta reflect on the mess she created / the mess she became, and invested time into herself by making a living at a saju café, improving her music-making capabilities, and remaining as sober as possible. however, after a mixtape of hers created ripples online, she’s started live sets in hongdae and is terrified that she’ll run into her old crowd, but is adamant on trying to make her dreams come true.

plots or any development you’d like to see for your character:

001.  the main plot point i’d love to explore is the dynamic between mido and her ex-lover, and if they’re not within this rp, dealing with their mutual friends / people who were aware of the falling out they all had would be dooope ngl. i left the gender of the person flexible as she’s bisexual and loves all people of all identities, so literally anyone can inquire about it! the relationship took shortly after she arrived in seoul and it turned romantic over time, but pretty quickly all things considered. specific years would be ~2016 to ~2018-ish.

002.  branching off from number 001, she cheated on this person towards the mid-to-end of their relationship with a few different people, so those connections are open too. any gender and pretty much any age so long as we’re comfy! infidelity is involved, so only inquire if that is something you’re okay with exploring / writing. totally understand if not! note, they didn’t have to have sex. it could’ve been lots of making out / emotional cheating, too.

003.  as she’s a mess who needs a little “supervision” despite being a grown ass woman, i would looove to have an individual who’s more of a benevolent / good influence on her. as she’s trying really hard to remain sober now that she’s entered the indie scene again, they’d be a shoulder for her to lean on when times get rough. she’d do her best to be there for them, too. she’s flawed, but a good friend.

004.  opposite of above, some bad influences that encourage her to take a shot or smoke some weed or drop some lsd would be pretty cool, too, just to fuck things up a little. it’ll be a lot for her to dip her toes into those waters again, but the temptation’s high and she’s one of those people that’s easily led, so...

was vaguely aware that her dad owned some property in hongdae, but didn’t know what it was for sure until he (tw: stroke mention) he had an unexpected stroke and finalized the minute details of his will while recovering at the hospital

to make a short story even shorter: rae’s not stoked about these properties being a bunch of music venues for hipsters or the premise that she has to work there to “validate” her claim to his money

started out as a 21 year old college grad with chronic rbf who looked like she’d rather be clipping her toenails at home than be there 

is now a 27 year old working busybody with chronic rbf who still looks like she’d rather be clipping her toenails at home than be here 

truth be told she doesn’t hate the underground scene she just doesn’t...get it. but now that her day job is communications at an agency that’s all about #youthculture and targeting gen z and young millennials, it’s been good marketing research in the meantime

the extra money isn’t so bad either

Hello to all of our current applicants, potential applicants, and general lurkers!

As we approach our official opening date this Friday November 19th, 2021 at 10pm EST we wanted to give our current accepted applicants a chance to plot with one another prior to opening to help do away with acceptance day nervousness (and inactivity). So we have prepared a premade intro that accepted applicants can post starting today to introduce themselves and their characters to everyone. We ask that you tag your intro post with UG.TALK and that you use the format below for all introductions (just to help keep things a little organized and on track).

despised music until he went to college / before woorim was born, his father used to be a hotshot, famous songwriter, but later got exposed (framed? who knows) for plagiarism, which ended up fragmenting his family (father, a sad alcoholic, and mother, an overworked pediatrics nurse)  

used to be a real mama’s boy until she passed away bc of breast cancer when he was in high school / relied on his older brother a lot, who married off into a rich family + works for a conglomerate company (subtle inferiority complex)

attended hongik university, but not much interest in studying / main focus was his girl and later, RiTZ magazine that eventually blew up

the girl he met in college aka the reason why he started to love music (and started RiTZ!)

breakup burned him but the magazine got famous so who’s the real loser here 

tldr on personality ; cunning, selfish, ambitious, insensitive, methodical, charismatic ; he’s quick-witted and good with his words, a real sweet-talker, and can be extremely persuasive when he wants to 

hates being looked down upon and disrespected, and fully (with emphasis, fully) enjoys the power the magazine allows him to hold in the hongdae scene / it’s always fun for him to see desperation scurry up to him in human form and ask for a little praise

but all in all, everything bad (and good) about him makes him a good boss / organized down to a t and fiercely protective of his own employees unless they cross him

and he’s honest (to some extent) when it comes to his reviews / if you’re good, then he’ll tell you, you’re good ; just don’t be bad

definitely the past ex who’s a musician, the heroine of his “i now love music” story! he was 22 when he met her and in college / she can be younger than him, but only by (max) 3 years

and other exes like from high school or maybe that three-month relationship he probably had after his heroine (that crashed and burned terribly) 

someone from RiTZ who helped out with the magazine since the very beginning and saw it take off

musicians/artists/fashion designers who consistently keep trying to catch his attention maybe they have something they can trade for a little praise in the magazine, like secrets or bought time?

a stalker-ish fan (or just plain stalker) would be fun ngl 

antagonistic relationships / always a sucker for angst and with a personality like his, it’s easy to make enemies, esp during first impressions

an ongoing or future love line(s) / he def has commitment issues but is too easily reeled in when he gets hooked on someone (and wears his heart on his sleeve in front of the person he’s fond of)

that one person woorim actually takes care of (despite him emphasizing independence) / like, are you going to burn the house down, and do you need him to cook? are you stuck in a dangerous part of town, and do you need him to pick you up? 

he’s a good fighter / maybe he saved your ass one time a few years back, and you’re one of the few people that’s seen him without all the power-hungry, insensitive facade
