Uncle is lucky to have foodie nephews & nieces who take him to their favourite restuarants to save him from eating yet another sale price instant noodle packet. So tonight it’s to Dominion Rd and Udon Works, Gordon & Yina’s favourite (Japanese) restaurant. Impressive, queues out the door and no bookings taken. Udon Works lives up to its name. They pride themselves in their base ingredients: Bonita stock, kombu kelp dashi and niboshi sardine dashi. The boosted soup stock is made to be finished off. It may taste “light” at first but the flavours of the dashi keeps on coming through right to the last spoonful. Yina had the wagyu beef sukiyaki udon, Gordon the miso nikomi with steamed chicken and warm udon. Uncle had the vege karaage tempura with Bukkake udon. And yes, he had all the bonita stock. And yes, all the dishes were substantial. We shared an agedashi tofu.
