Above are photos taken by one of our students this summer while visiting the city of Jerash in Jordan, the second biggest tourist attraction in Jordan after Petra.
In the modern city of Jerash lie the ruins of the Roman ancient city of Gerasa. Today, the city is considered to be the best-preserved Ancient Roman site outside of Italy and contains some of the finest Roman architecture in the world. The ancient city of Gerasa was greatly wealthy as a result of its fertile lands and constant supply of fresh water. Until today, the hills and valleys surrounding the ancient site are filled with wheat crop, olive trees, fig trees, and pine forests. In 749 AD, an earthquake hit the region and left the city in ruins that got buried in the soil for hundreds of years until being discovered in 1806 by Ulrich Jasper Seetzen, a German explorer.
