A local Democrat said lowering the flags would be "a small yet powerful gesture that reflects our shared values."
A row has broken out in New York State's Nassau County after Republican County Executive Bruce Blakeman allegedly ignored a request to lower American flags to half-staff on county buildings as a tribute to recently deceased former President Jimmy Carter.
"The Democrats are all 'giddy,'" the president-elect complained.
President-elect Donald Trump went on a social media rant Friday over American flags being flown at half-staff during his inauguration, both complaining about the situation and blasting his opponents for laughing about it.
“The Democrats are all ‘giddy’ about our magnificent American Flag potentially being at ‘half mast’ during my Inauguration,” Trump wrote. “They think it’s so great, and are so happy about it because, in actuality, they don’t love our Country, they only think about themselves.”

WASHINGTON | Trump orders US flags lowered to honor slain journalists
WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump has ordered the U.S. flags be flown at half-staff on federal property in honor of five newspaper journalists slain in Maryland’s capital.
The order comes after Annapolis Mayor Gavin Buckley said Monday Trump had declined his request to lower the flags. Trump issued a proclamation Tuesday ordering the flags be flown at half-staff through sunset.
Five Capital Gazette newspaper employees were killed Thursday when a gunman with a grudge against the publication shot them in the newsroom.
Trump repeatedly has called journalists the “enemy of the people.” He said the day after the shooting that journalists should not fear being violently attacked while doing their job.
The White House says Trump ordered the flags be lowered as soon as he learned of the Annapolis mayor’s request.
