Birthday in the holy land
My alarm went off at 4:30 am and I tumbled out of bed, brushed my teeth, put on 2 layers of pants and my jacket and with my roommate began to hike up to the top of Tel Tzuba. So what, now 17 years old, girl would get up early in the morning in the freezing cold? Well I wanted to watch the sunrise over a very special city, Jerusalem. I have never felt so blissful looking at a city. I watched another day start in the amazing, breathtaking country and every day in Israel feels as special as a birthday. Â
First Day in Israel
After 2 days of traveling 32 classmates and I arrived at Kibbutz Tzuba. After we all worked together to unloaded all of our 50 lb bags we walked up to this building called the Zula. We ate pita, falafel, and hummus and meet our staff members in a opening ceremony. I went back to my room and unpacked over 100 lb of stuff bonded with my roommates. Unpacking was a little hard with lack of storage for 4 girls, but we made due and are already sharing our things with each other. I peacefully fell asleep ready for my first day at Tzuba.
The next morning we all headed out to the Chadar Ochel (dinning room) for breakfast. It was a little scary seeing the other members of the Kibbutz. I felt a little weird invading their space and knowing very little Hebrew but our madrichim helped and introduced us to many new foods. We took a tour of the Kibbutz and by that time, all 33 jet lagged students went for an hour of free time. I took a quick nap and then went for school orientation. All my teachers seemed so amazing and committed to my work, and the small class sizes are pretty nice too. After meeting my teachers we had still a little more free time in which I did a few things in my room. Dinner was really good, so was lunch with all the fresh veggies and flavors. After dinner me and most of the participants went a playground, for some reason teenage boys can always turn something safe into something dangerous by doing things like climbing up slides the wrong way. After the long day we went to do a mixer by breaking the ice- literally. After a few wacks with a hammer, I got to know my classmates better.Â
The day was the first of many long ones to come, but I cant wait for this place to feel like home.
