This was taken up by Professor Eberan von Eberhorst, since Ferdinand Porsche had by that time ceased to cooperate with Auto Union.

A new 3.0-liter V12 Roots supercharged engine with 420 hp was installed on the chassis of the race car. Like the V16 from the Typ C, it had a single overhead camshaft that drove the intake valves via tappets, but the exhaust valves were now controlled by two additional shafts. An exhaust pipe ran out to the side of each cylinder.

The power unit was located in the back, and between it and the driver there was a fuel tank with two side chambers. The front suspension remained on transverse torsion bars, and in the rear, instead of a transverse spring, a De Dion axle with longitudinal torsion bars was installed.
