just watched TXF 1x8 and I feel SICK it was SO good
Hmwhh why did I start watching this in the middle of the night
āWeāre not who we areā:Ā 13x17 and X-Files (spec)
TRUST NO ONE ā Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) continue to collect the pieces necessary to open a rift to the other world in order to save their family. Their latest quest leads them to a Men of Letters bunker from the 1920s and a hungry God from another dimension. Meanwhile, Ketch (guest star David Hayden-Jones) makes a shocking decision about Gabriel (guest star Richard Speight Jr.) after an unruly encounter with Asmodeus (guest star Jeffrey Vincent Parise). John Showalter directed the episode written by Davy Perez (#1316). Original airdate 4/5/2018.
Supernatural Spoilers: āThe Thingā Description (via justanotheridijiton)
Now is not the time for me to begin speculating like mad <waves at tomorrowās writing deadline...then slinks away> but Iām SO HERE FOR the X-Files references that have happened so far with 13x17. Most obvious is the āTrust No Oneā in the official description. Yes, itās applicable to the direction that this season is taking but itās no accident that it was a classic TXF catchphrase that was once used as the tagline in place of the usualĀ āThe Truth is Out There.ā
The episode where the tagline appeared is 01x23 āThe Erlenmeyer Flaskā; the season 1 finale in which (spoilers? idk not really since the mythology is pretty known at this point) Mulder and Scully break into a government lab with the help of Mulderās inside informant, Deep Throat, and steal a substance calledĀ āPurity Controlā that contains hard evidence of extraterrestrial bacteria that the government was experimenting with and using to make alien-human hybrids. Unfortunately, Mulder gets himself kidnapped (goshdangit Mulder!) and Scully has to trade the evidence for his life. Meantime ally Deep Throat is shot to death for double crossing the shadowy government conspiracy.
How is this remotely related? Well, for one thing weāre already deep into crosses and double crosses so the assassination of an unlikely ally (Ketch? Itās got to be Ketch) is more than possible. Iād put more money on that, although they are looking for an ingredient so thereās that. But...also...the title.
So, bear with me, I take it to refer to John CarpenterāsĀ āThe Thing,ā a FUCKING FANTASTIC 1982 horror movie that you should all go watch even though it has famously bad special effects. Go ahead. Iāll just wait here then...
Right, so, just in case you didnāt do that hereās the plot recap from Wikipedia:
It tells the story of a group of American researchers in Antarctica who encounter the eponymous "Thing", a parasitic extraterrestrial life form that assimilates other organisms and in turn imitates them. The group is quickly overcome by paranoia and conflict as they learn that they can no longer trust each other and that any one of them can be the Thing.Ā
The end of the film is especially bleak, as the two living characters watch together as the camp burns and share a bottle of scotch while fully aware that either of them might actually be The Thing. (We donāt find out if either is.)Ā
Given this seasonās focus on things that look like other things it seems pretty likely that some shapeshifting will be going on and, as before, that it will probably be expositional and, given the foreshadowing weāve had of the split between the brothers, itās most likely going to reveal their mistrust. I mean, heck, hunkering down in a bunker with scotch watching the world burn while quietly knowing that you donāt fully trust the other guy youāre with is...so much of the show. (I donāt exactly love TFW conflict but it seems inevitable right now.)
The X-Files connection, though, has to do with a very early episode, 1x08 āIceā, which basically just follows the plot ofĀ āThe Thingā except that itās not a shapeshifter but a parasitic worm (gross) that attaches to your brainstem and mind controls you into being incredibly violent. Mulder and Scully get trapped up there with a group of strangers and, in paranoia about The Thing, they all start turning on each other. This is the episode that begins with a radio transmission from the arctic ice station that is a man repeatingĀ āWeāre not who we areā - creepy AF and very appropriate to this season of SPN.
Whatās that you say? SPN already did that exact thing complete with worm, isolation, and paranoia in 6x16 ā...And Then There Were Noneā? The last episode starring Mitch Pileggi, aka Skinner from TXF? And an episode that highlighted how little the boys trusted one another at that point? Youāre right!! It did! But when an idea is worth doing once itās worth doing twice and weāve already had so much S6 in S13 that it makes total sense. Itās interesting that itās followed by 6x17Ā āMy Heart Will Go Onā and 6x18Ā āFrontierlandā, episodes that deal respectively with alternate dimensions/realities and time travel since those aspects are also going to be in 13x16 and 13x17. I feel like weāre moving methodically through S6 in the writersā room and that makes me nervous because we all remember 6x19 and 6x20... <cries>
Anyway, āIceā is also the TXF episode that first introduced the idea of an alien life form being trapped in permafrost that was just now unfreezing...itself the basis for most of the mytharc including the Purity Control that Deep Throat dies for. Itās here that I see the connection toĀ āTrust No Oneā in the description. PR is not showrunning but PR wants to remind everyone of SPNās ties to TXF. And I assume so does Davy Perez, who I adore and who only just finished working on a short calledĀ āAbductionā about...aliens. Bet he did himself a rewatch.
I freaking love X-Files and will be so happy if they decide to use it as a parallel/subtextual reference in 13x17. I mean, they are VERY OBVIOUSLY going to retread the plot ofĀ āThe Thingā and itās thematically perfect for this moment in the narrative. I just hope TXF figures too since it already has such deep connections to SPN.Ā
Heck, I canāt remember which followers like X-Files stuff so Iām not sure who to tag. @sactownbrowns3 @fuckedupasusual @tinkdw @elizabethrobertajonesĀ @thedogsled maybe itās you? Sorry for my awful memory! If youāre someone who wants a tag on future TXF stuff reblog or comment to let me know!
p.s. Hereās the intro toĀ āIceā...tell me thatās not AMAZING and creepy as hell!

X-Files Rewatch~ ICE 1x08
Ice Ice BABY! Ā Sorry. That song always comes to mind when I think of this episode.Ā
* this will be a bit of a ramble. just throwing down some thoughts. no particular order*
This was a fun episode. Ā It was not only a stand-alone but they were alone...well, isolated from the world with people/characters they did not know and can I add there was a lot of touching going on between Mulder and Scully. I'm not complaining but WOW, I had almost forgotten. Also, the worm and ear stuff..GAG. I kept grabbing at my ear making sure nothing was crawling in it.Ā
I forgot how much Scully was kicking butt! Tackling people, triple her size, down to the ground. Her little legs flying throught the air! LOL she is such a toughy.Ā
She also was once again having to prove herself to the Doctor that was assigned. He would challenge her and you could see her biting her tongue. But she WAS correct and she once again proves she knows what she is talking about and DO NOT underestimate her.Ā
I loved that Scully and Mulder's trust was tested during this episode. Ā The circumstances surrounding this ep and all the was going on, it lead to some major tense moments. The whole gun stand off was SO good! The screaming and challenging. WOW! Ā CRAZY!
Mulder was so funny! He HAD to mention they were in the Arctic as they were checking for spots. LOL Ā He just wanted to remind them just in case LOL
One of my all time fave moments is when Feli...okay I am leaving that there because I have Felicity and Oliver on the brain...and this moment reminds me of them due to the touching and just no personal space. Olicity and MSR's motto...My space is your space! Anyway...
I loved the two of them checking each other out ...and Scully thought she was the only one that was going to get to do that, so as she turns to leave and Mulder grabs her..*fanning self* she is a bit shocked. As he is checking her, he is so gentle. Sigh...these two. So much in just a touch.Ā
I have to say the lighting always gets me. It really adds to the mood of it all. The use of flashlights. Who knew it could make things feel so tense and creepy. Ā
The ending was great! The fight and Scully getting locked in the closet/storageroom/jail. lol Ā Mulder being held down. It made me cringe. Ā I have seen this ep so many times but it still gave me the heebie jeebies. eek
I feel like so much more trust was built here. Every episode brings them closer and even when they question each other it just doesnt trump their trust. They are building a strong foundation and learning how the other works. Their strengths and weakness and how the compliment each other.Ā
Sorry for the ramble and being all over the place. Looking forward to the next one! Ā
The Scu11y22's X-Files ReWatch
TXF 1x08 ICE scu11y22 Rewatch I think the title should be renamed "Shirtless Mulder and Spunky Scully's Ice Adventure" I like the word Stickwithitness Another Morgan and Wong classic Our beloved TV Pilot Director God, David Nutter directed ICE. This is the man who personally rooted for and led Stephen Amell to his role as Oliver Queen. Hey China beach dude! Movement under the skin. WTH?? It was a fast acting little shit wasn't it? I had a lot of EEEWWWW moments. Don't mess with Dominate Worms. I was stunned that Mulder didn't trust Scully when he had the gun on her. He was irrational. Here are some of my favorite scenes/lines: Love Mulder in a sweater and henley. Scully's NO when Mulder started his other life form speech.lol Before anyone passes judgment...we are in the Arctic. Loved Mulder in the red lighting, he's so pretty. The Mulder and Scully gun-off. My most favorite of course was the Gawd damn sexual tension during their personal exams in the storage room. The height difference was so pronounced and them pulling their shirts down and how Mulder's entire hand encompassed Scully's neck. YUM, excuse me as I furiously fan myself.
