two-toes replied to your post: Ah, just some cooking and my Christmas is all set...
what’s a yankee swap?
A yankee swap, at least the version I’ve always done with friends/family, is a typically Christmas gift-giving game where everyone brings a wrapped gift. Then everyone draws a number and then go in order of the numbers drawn to pick a gift from the pile.
After the first person in order picks, the next does so, but then they can swap out their gift with one of the already opened gifts if they don’t like what they got. Our house rules include the #1 person getting the final chance to swap their gift once everything is opened.
There are differing rules depending on who you talk to, and similar games with other names, but that’s the gist of it.
The adults in my family started doing it once we grew up. With us, there’s three kinds of gifts: Easy, still pretty nice stuff like a big bag of snacks or lotto tickets or giftcards, kind of cool stuff you can brag about bringing, or the worst thing you can find.
