Animals born with two faces. 

Recently, there has been a lot of hype surrounding a cat that was born in America that has two faces. This kitten, was rejected from it's mother and hand reared by the owner using a syringe to feed her. 

There have been several cases of animals being born with this disease, called diprosopus. Diprosopus manifests itself by duplication of the face, on one head. 

The growth of two faces is due to the over proliferation of the SHH protein. SHH stands for Sonic Hedgehog (cool huh?) and was discovered in the Drosophila genome (there are also loads of other fly-related genes with awesome names). 

Under-proliferation of the SHH gene can result in cyclopia, where the facial features are insufficiently developed. 

The less reported facts are the sad downsides of this disease. Although the animals can have perfect internal organs. the deformities in the face can result in cleft palate; making them incredibly difficult to nurse and often resulting in the animals dying very early in life, due to starvation, pneumonia or getting milk in the lungs. 

The most recent buzz was around a cat called Harvey Dent (after Two-face from Batman), the world press kicked up a storm 7 days ago (http://news.sky.com/story/1102593/two-faced-kitten-rare-janus-cat-born-in-us). They then did not report, 2 days after, the kitten unfortunately died. 

However, even with very low odds, there are some two-headed cats that have beaten the odds. 4, in fact.
