“I think we need to take a break,” you bring up randomly during breakfast, the steam from your coffee floating up blurring your view of your boyfriend, future ex-boyfriend, as you rest your chin on the back of your hand that’s on the counter.Â
You can feel the air around you grow thick, and the sound of Satoru’s cold coffee glass on the countertop resounds throughout the small kitchen space, spreading out throughout the bottom floor. His eyes burn a hole into the crown of your head as he stares at you with a puzzled expression, words dying on his lips.
Continuing you give your reasoning, “We’ve been together for two years now, and the relationship has become…dry recently wouldn’t you agree?” You spin your mug on the table, watching how the light shifts on it, “All we do recently is sit in silence or argue over trivial things. Feels like we're stuck in some montage of a couple fighting until the inevitable happens.”
“I’ve been busy and stressed, that’s not a reason to break up. Things will be better soon,” Satoru responds.
You look at him, heart aching, “It also isn’t a reason to argue all the time.” You drink the rest of your coffee and sit silently for a few more moments before breaking it again, “We aren’t going anywhere right now, Satoru. Our relationship is at a stalemate where you only want to further your carrier while putting no effort into this relationship, and I’m waiting for some sort of effort…some sort of sign that I’m doing this on my own. That I’m not the only one that once this to go further. But it seems that’s where we are stuck, I want more from you while you want less of me.”
Satoru shakes his head, fist clenching on the counter, “That’s not true. I want us to work, I-i want a future with you, but I need to secure that future first.”
“And what’s the point of doing that if I’m not there!” The clock ticks on the kitchen wall and a cloud passes overhead as your voice echoes throughout the apartment. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to yell.”
The room falls quiet again, and you sit there in silence. The shadow of time dancing on the walls. And a new heavyweight settling over your hearts.
“Do you really want to break up?” Satoru asks.
You nod while chewing on your bottom lip, blinking rapidly, “I do. I already took some of my things out to Shoko’s place.”
“That explains why there was suddenly more room in the closet.”Â
“I’ll be gone by this afternoon when you get back from work,” you answer, getting up from your seat, and placing the mug in the sink, “I just have to get the last of my stuff.”
Satoru remains silent while you head toward the stairs that lead to your once-shared bedroom before speaking, “You said this relationship was going nowhere,” he places something small on the counter, “but that isn’t true.” He looks at you, the whites of his eyes red, you feel your heart cracking under his next words, “I was planning on proposing soon.”
