Summary (whole fic):

He doesn’t care if this is real anymore. This man— this beautiful man, who came to Dema of all places and saved him, who’s staring at him like he holds all the answers, like he matters, who’s smiling at him like he’s truly happy he’s there— is definitely too good to be true.

or: 5 ways that Clancy makes sure that Torchbearer is real +1 way Torchbearer had been checking the entire time

Chapter One: takes place immediately after Clancy leaves Dema (the first time). He looks up at the sun and talks with Torchbearer (and gets emotional)

CWs: vague self-harm via rubber band

Chapter Two: takes place a few weeks after Clancy’s arrival in Trench. Torchbearer takes Clancy out to look for rabbit traps at night. Things go poorly.

CWs: brief description of gore (very mild I promise), description of animal cruelty / abuse, depiction of a panic attack

Chapter Three: takes place during SAI era. Clancy feels like he’s losing his mind with the combination of the torture from the Bishops and not knowing whether or not Torchbearer is even real. He decides to commit suicide via pointy rock and leaves a note for Torchbearer to find, (if he’s real).

He wakes up to Torchbearer having left a note of his own, pleading with Clancy to wait until morning so they could talk and he could fix the bandages.

CWs: self harm, suicide attempt, sexual assault (heavily implied and not strongly detailed), probably some medical inaccuracies

Chapter Four: post SAI, post navigating, pre-paladin strait. Clancy has a nightmare and wakes up to find that Torchbearer isn’t there. He comes back though and they hug about it <3

CWs: cws: nightmares, briefly referenced past sexual assault, referenced self harm / suicide attempt (aka last chapter), brief / very mild suicidal ideation
