madrugada: the moment at dawn when the night greets the day.
At some point along the line, days blend into nights and nights into days; winter comes and then it goes, summer stays but not enough. She waits for weekends on some weeks and then on others, each day feels like the start of a Friday night or an early Saturday morning when it feels as if she has all the time in the world to do what she wants to do. Except, it doesnât work like that; the lifestyle doesnât allow it and when it does, free time could be a cruel thing. Give it too much thought and being able to welcome the week without rushing from place to place could be daunting; admittedly, a little frightening to the extent that âwhat ifâs replace routines. What if nothing will happen? What if this goes on for too long? What if this is what it will always be like from now on? What if, what if, what if repeating on and on like a broken record. More often than not, an unwanted one because itâs really only on days when she must wake up too early that she sees the moment night makes way for day.
One could easily mistake it for a sunset for the sky replicates it perfectly except there is more peace; a stillness she does not get to witness often and once she does, it leaves her breathless almost and above all, thankful. And the feeling of gratitude can be so overwhelming at times that her heart flutters â a flutter of relief, a âthank God I made it today tooâ thought which draws her in a moment of silent contemplation. Itâs a hushed moment, a private moment albeit the setting but everyone seems so far away almost as if they know to let her be. Just for a moment as she looks on towards a vast sky painted in warm pinks and emerging yellows.Â
Mark seems just as caught up by the sight as she is for he remains silent and he looks on as far as the eye can see so Hyolyn hangs on to the silence just a little longer. After all, their conversation can resume eventually, perhaps when they both allowed the view to sink in only for it to make way for a burst of energy, a push to let the day begin as soon as the sun comes into view. It wakes up slowly; as slow as they have been with their small talk, but it crawls up into view little by little and surprisingly, the first few rays are blinding â much more so than they are in the middle of the day and suddenly, Hyolyn squeezes her eyes shut, startled.
Itâs him who breaks the silence with a short laugh, surely at her and finally, her muscles seem to kick into action because a smile begins forming on her lips.
âIt took me by surprise,â she defends, âI thought I was going to go blind for a moment.âÂ
He laughs again but whether itâs at her or with her, Hyolyn doesnât mind it. She joins him, briefly and just as quietly â itâs been some time since she last caught sight of him this close, after all.Â
