idk if youve ever talked about hair... but seeing the actors have good hair in the ads to then experience the same old same old bowl cut in the show not a second later... devastating
Why Terrible Hair?
HA! I think you mean mainly in Thai BL (but also Kdramas).
I think 90% of the time that terrible bowl cut (heavy bangs swept slightly to the side for the seme characters) is done to older actors to make them look younger for high school & uni set BL.
As opposed to the "Korean model" look where it's swept back & up, parted, and/or more to one side:
That’s only done on older characters, as a rule. (Unless the actor has a real baby face.)
There’s the floppy hair (either textured or smooth):
Designed so the actor can play with it a lot but also a sign of innate coollness.
And, similarly, the half back look and longer hair which we don’t get often but is usually a bit of a “bad boy” persona.
Frankly the more uke and “innocent” the character, the more likely to have a bowl cut. (Unless the cut is absolutely necessary to indicate youth, in which case even the seme might have one because the actor is like in his late 20s or 30s - this has happened to Zee a couple times, or when there’s a flashback sequence like in Manner of Death.)
Here’s Kang Yoo Seok rocking the variants very subtly and yet you can see how he looks more mature with a different style?
Not that this is a defense of the bowl cut, but yeah, I think that’s why they do it.
Here is my ult bias discussing this very thing:
That’s Lee Minhyuk of BTOB aka the Metal Idol, do yourself a favor and check out his IG hutazone, boy will break your brain with duality.
You can thank me later.
