Godfrey's Report 1: Accompanying Simon and a Ntugi/Leparua Collaboration
This week, I traveled from Ntugi Secondary with Simon (Ntugi Group’s Intern) to visit the some of the other programs he supports: Ngarendare Secondary, Lewa Primary, and Leaprua Primary. The goal was to work with Simon to get a picture of the regional OLPC development within the Lewa supported schools, and to look for possible points of sharing and collaboration.
Monday: Ntugi (my home base) The week started well with Ntugi students having started the end-of-year exams. This meant that Simon had to take a day off from the program to give them some time to study for the papers - but with a plan to continue with the program next Monday, November 21st.
Tuesday: Ngarendare and Lewa Primary
We went to Ngarendare Secondary with Simon. Just as in our school, the students were in exams so we had to work with teachers. Among the activities which we worked on were the Distance activity which they could use in case they carried out a field study.
The other activity which we worked on was the Tuxmath. Koome, the Physics and Math teacher, was so pleased because he thinks this math game is the best way to engage students with the target of improving their arithmetic skills.
Simon works with Ngarendare teachers Koome and Robert using Tuxmath.
We also did sharing of write activity at Ngarendare.
Mutuma works on the Write activity at Ngarendare Secondary School.
After we left Ngarendare, we headed to Lewa Primary where we worked with the teachers still on the same sharing activities which included Write activity and Distance activity. It was fun as all the teachers wanted to create something for the rest.
Simon works with the teachers of Lewa Primary School.
This gave each of them a chance of correcting their colleagues in case one made a mistake in either the typing or observation (in case of a field study).
Wednesday: Subuiga Primary
We were supposed to spend the day at Subuiga Primary, but the teachers were too busy marking end-of-year exams so we organized to meet the coming Wednesday since, by then, they shall be through most of their work.
Friday: Leparua Primary
We went to Leparua, accompanied by Jackline, a Form 2 student from Ntugi Secondary’s Computer Club. The day went well with the students continuing with a FotoToon assignment which Simon had given them the previous week. The Leparua students are using the webcam to take pictures for their FotoToon project.
They were supposed to come up with pictures to illustrated a simple story within a single comic page using FotoToon. Below are some photos of what was taking place.
Simon took this photo of me showing the students how to orient the webcam.
It was great to see Jackline, a Ntugi secondary school student working so well with the primary students form Leparua (below).
It was very impressive to see how far Simon has come with these students in a short amount of time.
