just a little time [439 words | 5x16 coda with a little 5x17 spec at the end] Spoilers for 5x16 and 5x17
They are still standing in the hospital waiting room. The shock of Claudette’s sudden death passing over them in waves. It’s weird how one casualty is sometimes worse than a few. Especially when they seemed okay. When everything else had gone right. The weight of the whole ordeal settling over each of them.Â
"You're staring at me," Eddie says, not looking up from where he is texting Carla.
"I am not staring at you," Buck replies indignantly.
Eddie just looks up with his phone as if to say "Sure you weren't" and then continues texting.
They stand there in comfortable silence, Buck shifting from foot to foot.
"Spit it out, Buck," Eddie says when the silence between the, among the hum of the waiting room, gets just a touch too loud.
"Thanks for having my back in there today," he picks the hospital floor with the toe of his boot.
"You don't have to pretend with me."
"I-"
"It's in my blood." "Sounds like being a firefighter."
"Kinda felt like old times right?" Buck asks, and there's a catch in his voice as he stares away from Eddie.
"Yeah," Eddie replies softly. "It was nice."
Buck whips his head around fast.
"I missed it. I missed you,” Eddie admits quietly.Â
"We saw each other almost everyday. I-"
"I missed working together. It's a different kind of partnership." “Buckley and I are on two.” “You two should take this on the road.”Â
And he catches it too late. But it seems to go over Buck's head. Or he doesn't care.
"Does this mean you're coming back?" Buck asks, the hope bleeding through.
“Move on. I have.”Â
"I don't know," he replies honestly.
"You don't have to pretend with me."
"But I thought you said that Chris was okay with it, and Bobby-" Buck rushes.Â
"Buck," he says with a gentle force, "it's not about anyone else letting me anymore. I think I need a little more time. I miss it. I really do. And I do want to come back. Eventually. But I'm not ready yet. I still have some figuring out to do."
"Oh," Buck replies softly, "okay. But that isn't a no?"
"No. It's a someday."
"It's in my blood." "Sounds like being a firefighter."
"I can work with someday," he smiles and bumps his shoulder against Eddie's. And the gentle silence returns. Eddie’s phone pings quietly, startling. He checks it thinking it’s a text back from Carla. From: Sophia Eddie, you need to come home. It’s Dad. Neither he or mom have said anything, but something is wrong. You know how stubborn he is. I’m worried.Â
Shit.Â
