Two #MichiganEngineers are working to solve a daily, worldwide problem – the tangled headphone phenomena.

Frustrated by the mess of headphone cords in their pockets, they designed a cell phone case with a retractable earbud cord mechanism built right in. It is lovingly dubbed the “TurtleCell.”

Alum and co-founder Paul Schrems relates a story with which we're all-too-familiar. "I was sick of pulling that rat's nest out of my pocket and backpack – by the time I got it untangled, I had already walked into my next class!"

The cell phone cover is thinner than the "OtterBox," adding only 6.5mm of thickness to the iPhone 5. But it's just as protective, says undergrad and co-founder Nicholas Turnbull. It uses a unique, patented winding mechanism to retract the headphones, which was designed by the pair to be thin and to stand the test of time.

Schrems and Turnbull have been working on their innovative new product for almost two years now, and they've taken advantage of U-M entrepreneurial resources like the TechArb business incubator and 1,000 Pitches to get it done.
