Fond Memories of Family Dinners Past:
Turkey Butt Edition
When I was growing up, Thanksgivings were the time for Mom’s family to gather at our house (while we visited Dad’s family for Christmas). There are a lot of people on Mom’s side, but they all made the trip from various distances, and we had a grand time.
One year when the generations were aging up and things showed signs of shifting, my aunt from up north couldn’t make it. She felt bad for missing out. As a long-distance contribution, she mailed us an elaborate dessert: a chocolate turkey that was dang near life-size. It was amazing.
It graced the Thanksgiving table as a regal centerpiece, and after dinner one of the uncles got the honor of breaking into it. The turkey was hollow, thankfully, and most of it shattered into easily distributed pieces.
All but the base, which was solid and dense. This was, we swiftly decided, the Turkey Butt. After we were done eating, all that remained were small piles of fragments, and a large slab of Turkey Butt.
There was still Turkey Butt left the next day, despite hearty inroads, and the next. By the time everyone departed for their own homes, Turkey Butt remained.
It lasted much longer than anyone expected, and brought more joy than I’m sure my aunt ever dreamed. We had regular board game nights with the winner given extra pieces of Turkey Butt as a prize.
Eventually we ate the last of it, but its legacy lives on.
My aunt was there in person the next year, and she brought a smaller chocolate turkey with her.

While buying a new collar for Luna today. I let slip that her nickname is Turkey Butt. The owner of the shop died laughing for 5 minutes...
I updated my list of friends in my About section but as I was going through I realized there’s people like thatdiabologicalfeminist that i can’t put on cause I don’t have like a name or letter initial and I’m like “NOOOOOOO LET ME ADD YOU TO MY FRIENDS LIST THING”
