Fucking MATLAB.
YUUUP.Ā i hate that these job ads are all āhey! we want a geologist/geophysicist to work on this topic!āĀ but then once you get to the requirements section, itās pretty clear they just want a programmer and not an actual geologist.Ā
i think what makes it worse is that ALL the jobs in my field are like this right now, and i really wonder who the fuck is doing actual sampling and analyses.Ā because the models donāt fucking work if you donāt know shit about the system youāre trying to model.

thank you for the concern! Ā it was pretty quiet....a few protesters and supporters got into a yelling mach from across the street, but nothing big.

Whyyyyyyyy?
yeah....figured iād get a lot of why replies. Ā donāt worry, iām not on the fence about who iām voting for or anything. Ā mostly i went because it was an opportunity to observe the people who are supporting him and try to figure out why they find him so attractive. Ā it was definitely a learning experience, and i kind of had to work to both look the part of a GOP supporter from iowa (plaid shirt and jeans), plus keep my snarky mouth shut during the speeches. Ā
iām glad i went (it was the bfās idea since weāre in iowa and there didnāt seem to be a super huge crowd...weāre both super liberal dems and hadnāt seen him speak before)....but BOY OH BOY is trumpās america fucked up.
i wrote a bunch of thoughts that iāll post shortly.
written for @turiferā. Happy Birthday! Jack/Bitty, rated pg-ish, flangst
Sometimes wedding cake isnāt a metaphor. Sometimes Jack gets really wrong ideas in his head.
Jack coasts a sleepy hand across the sheets on the other side of the bed. Theyāre cool and empty. The blankets are rucked up. Bitty is probably sitting in the kitchen pouring over recipes, which is what he does when he canāt sleep.
He swings his feet to the floor and presses his bare toes on the cool wood. He doesnāt like carpets because cold feels friendly. He likes sun and warmth too, but cold is reassuring.
He stretches and pads into the kitchen, rubbing the sheet marks on his shoulder. Bitty is perched on a stool at the kitchen island, drinking from a mug that says,Ā ācutie Ļ.ā His hair is sticking straight up on one side like a pale fin. His cheeks are pink. He looks so wholesome and sweet, which he sometimes is. But three hours ago? Not so much.
Bittyās feet dangle a good 8 inches off the ground. He doesnāt tuck them onto the rung the way a lot of people would. The sight makes Jackās heart tight, which makes no sense. He didnāt expect being in love meant youād care about the way someoneās legs take up space.
Bitty looks up and smiles, lopsided and tired. Thereās no need for him to say he couldnāt sleep. Jack shuffles over and wraps his arms around Bitty, crossing them at the front. Bitty leans back into Jack and the magazine falls closed. And. Itās a wedding magazine. Jackās lips twitch and he clamps them shut before he says something stupid. His boyfriend of two years is reading a wedding magazine. Should he be freaked out? In a rom com heād freak out now, but this isnāt a movie. Heās not going to freak out.
Bitty offers Jack his mug. Itās warm milk with nutmeg and a splash for Frangelico. Jack shakes his head and waits for Bitty to finish it. The bride on the cover is wearing a very short white dress and a floor length long veil. She looks familiar. Jack scans the headlines and recognizes her name. Her wedding is featured in this. Thatās why Bitty is reading it. Jack is... relieved. Or maybe disappointed? The reasonable part of his brain asserts that heās not publicly out yet. Thereās no rush. Bitty needs time to figure out what he wants and who he wants to be.
Bitty washes his mug and yawns. He holds out a hand to Jack who takes it and follows Bitty back to bed. In this moment Jack knows for certain that if Bitty holds out his hand, he will always take it. Whatever that means.
Over the next week Bitty amasses stacks of wedding magazines. Heās marked pages with post-it flags. Theyāre fanned across the coffee table. Jack wonders if itās a hint. Is he supposed to ask why Bitty has them? Is he supposed to propose? Do you give a dude a ring? Do you need to rent a hot air balloon, or some horses? Does Bitty like horses? Should he propose on skates? The reasonable part of Jackās brain reminds him that thereās no rush, but the reasonable part is shrinking about as quickly as the ice sheet around Greenland.
He returns home after a roadie to find Shitty, Lardo, Ransom, Holster, and Chowder arguing at his dining room table. There are five cakes in a line down the center of the table. Everyone has five paper plates in front of them and partially eaten slices.
āCome on, man. The lemon curd is bright. Perfect balance of sweet and tart. Itās symbolic.ā Ransom is shaking his head in disappointment. Holster is smirking, which means heās been winding Ransom up.
āZimmermann!ā Shitty launches himself at Jack like he hasnāt seen him in three years. Itās been three days. Bitty wriggles in between them and Shitty hugs them both.
Everyone else calls, āHey, Jack!ā But he can hear the extra exclamation points from Chowder.
āJack,ā Lardo says, slapping her flat hands on the table. āGet your ass over here. You have to settle this.ā
Jack lets Shitty push him into a chair. Bitty presents Jack with five neat slices of cake and a sheet of paper to rank them. Heād been looking forward to unwinding with Bitty, but he loves his friends. He should be happy to see them, itās just been a long week and he lost two games.
āHereās a glass of water for palate cleansing.ā Bitty says, wiping a large serrated knife clean.Ā āBe honest. This is no time to be all polite and Canadian.āĀ
Jack looks at the cake slices and then back up at the others. Theyāre all watching him like hawks. Is he choosing his own wedding cake right now? He hasnāt proposed, or been proposed to. But Bitty might choose a wedding cake before anything else. He might just plan the cake for his wedding before he has a groom.
āOh, honey.ā Bitty slips his arm around Jackās shoulder. āYou donāt have to finish each slice. I know thatād screw up your nutrition plan. But just take a little bite. Your opinion is important.ā
āYeah, and weāre deadlocked.ā Shitty crosses his arms and Lardo shakes her head like whatever.
Jack dutifully eats a forkful of red velvet cake. Itās perfect. Melt in your mouth cream cheese frosting, velvety red cake with the tiniest hint of cocoa. Itās the worst thing Jackās ever eaten, because it comes with a horrible realization. He could be helping Bitty pick a cake for a wedding Jack wonāt be a part of. He gives the red velvet the lowest score, 5.
Mutters go round the table. Itās weird to be eating cake while five people stare at you and Jack is used to people staring at him. Ransom looks smug about the red velvet, but a divot of worry sneaks between Bittyās brows.
Jack takes a sip of water and tries the next cake: yellow sponge cake, with fresh strawberries and vanilla buttercream. The buttercream is silky and light, which means itās the kind with egg whites and no yolks. Jack has attended the Eric Bittle lectures on cake frosting several times.
He rates it a 3 and Bittyās divot eases. Shitty and Lardo whisper furiously to each other. Shitty looks disappointed. Jack notices that Shitty made about 20 exclamation points on his score card next to the red velvet.
Jack tries the yellow cake with apricot jam and mocha buttercream. Itās divine. He holds off on giving it a rank and moves on to the chocolate mousse cake, which is obscene. Jack wants to take this cake into the other room and do unspeakable things to it. He marks it a 4 because thereās no way Bitty is marrying some other guy with this cake. After a second, he swaps the red velvetās 5 with the mousseās 4. Heād give the mousse a -300 if he could. Shitty doesnāt look much happier.
Holster grumbles, but Ransom looks delighted. Lardo glares at Jack like he just threatened to make kittens illegal. Bitty hovers next to Jack and twists his apron like heās wringing it out. Itās bone dry.
Jack is exhausted. He wants everyone to go home. He wants the cake to go away. He wants to curl up on the couch with Bitty. Nap in the sunlight thatāll only be around for another hour or so.
But he her tries the white cake with lemon curd and vanilla buttercream. Itās fine, but itās not in the same league as the mousse. He nods. Bitty can marry the asshole lawyer that Shitty will probably introduce him to and eat this cake. Jack will hire a plane to fly over with a banner that says, āEnjoy your lemon cake, dickface. Itās not the best.ā
Ransom elbows Holster and says, āSee. Jack gets it. Itās a metaphor. Marriage means taking the sour with the sweet.ā
Holster rolls his eyes. Jack marks the lemon cake a one and Ransom cheers and drums his hands on the table and then on Holster.
āReally,ā Bitty leans over the back of Jackās chair and frowns.Ā āYou donāt like lemon normally, or full on buttercream.ā
Jack shrugs. He doesnāt like the way it coats his mouth and lingers. Itās assertively creamy, like the insides of truffles.Ā
They order pizza and drink beer. Jack laughs when heās supposed to and answers questions on autopilot. It takes forever, but finally everyone leaves. Bitty packed up the leftover cake for Chowder to take back to The Haus. Good riddance.
Bitty finishes wiping down the dining room table and hurls the sponge at the sink, narrowly missing Jack who is rinsing out empty beer bottles to recycle.
āJack.ā Bitty shakes his head. āWhy are you being so weird about this?ā
Jack has reached his limit. Heās been on pins and needles for weeks. Heās googled gay engagement tokens, which confused him to no end. He hasnāt slept well the last few nights, worrying. And earlier, while Shitty told a long story about copyright law, Jack fleshed out Bittyās future husband. Heās a lawyer named James who reads post-modern novels and lives in Beacon Hill. He has one of those adorable brick homes with flower boxes in the windows. Jack also drank 2 beers, which 1.5 beers more than he usually has. His head is a little muzzy.
Jack stands up and coldly says, āI donāt know why youāre making me pick out a wedding cake for James! You havenāt even met him yet!ā
Bitty throws up his hands. āJames who?ā
āI donāt know,ā Jack says.Ā āWhen you meet him, you tell me.ā
āJack, youāre not making any sense.ā Bitty rushes him and grabs Jackās face. Tilting it toward the light. āYou said you didnāt hit your head that hard last night.ā
Jack shakes Bitty off and ignores the hurt on Bittyās face. āI didnāt. Iām not concussed.ā
Jack storms off to the bedroom and starts pulling off his clothes and hurling them on the floor. Bitty follows and puts each thing in the appropriate laundry baskets, which annoys Jack deeply. But heās not 8 years old. Heās absolutely not going to go over and dump out all the laundry on the floor. But oh, how he wants to.
āMy head is fine!ā Jack is wearing his boxers and a single sock.
āI didnāt say anything,ā Bitty holds his hands out palms up.
Bitty sits on the side of the bed, fighting to stay calm, but heās got the duvet clutched in his fists. āWho is this James?ā
Itās like Jack can feel the ice cracking on a pond beneath him, but he stomps on it anyway. āYour future husband.ā
āMy what?ā Bitty squeezes one eye shut like heās trying to look down a microscope.
Jack sits on the very edge of the bed and stares at his hands, which are shaking. āYou know. The guy youāll end up with. Eventually.ā
āAre you breaking up with me?āĀ Bitty scrambles onto his knees, next to Jack. His knee collides with a bruise on Jackās leg.
Itās not the other shoe that drops. An entire shoe factory collapses. Jack flops back on the bed and covers his face with his hands. His fingers are cold and his cheeks are hot. He can imagine how red he is.
Through his hands he says, āYou want to bake wedding cakes. Like. For other people. Merde.ā
Bitty leans over him and pries Jackās hands off his face. Bitty still looks confused, but not mad. So thatās not so bad.
āWhy would I make people try five different kinds of ca-- Oh.ā Bitty sits back on his knees. Eyes round. Not blinking. Mouth open. He blinks. āOh.ā
Jack slaps his hands back over his face. Okay. Now itās that bad.
āYou thought I wanted to get married?ā Bittyās voice gets higher with every word. āAnd maybe not even to you?!ā He thumps Jack across the chest with a pillow.Ā āYou! Ugh.āĀ
āI know you want to get married some day,ā Jack says. He rubs where the pillow hit him, even though it didnāt hurt.
āIād like to be old enough to rent a car before I plight my troth.ā Bitty curls up next to Jack, on his side, like an apostrophe.
āI panicked.ā Jack reaches for Bittyās hand. He squeezes it and waits for Bitty to squeeze back. He doesnāt. Jack keeps going. āI saw you reading wedding magazines and I donāt know. I had some kind of irrational fit. I love you so much and I worry. You know? Having to keep us secret from most people is too much to ask. And eventually youāll realize you deserve better. Youāll go off and find a James who can marry you on a beach and eat that chocolate mousse cake.ā
āNot lemon curd?ā Bitty says innocently, the little shit.
āNo. Not the lemon curd.ā Jack sighs. āRansom may think sweet and sour is a metaphor for love, but itās not how I feel about you. The mousse is how I feel.ā
Bitty presses his face into Jackās shoulder. He lets Jack hold his hand, but heās not holding it back.
āThe mousse cake is intense, but not heavy. There couldnāt possibly be a better cake. Itās so good I didnāt want to share it. And I kind of wanted...ā Jack laughs a little.
Bitty squeezes Jackās hand: what?
āI kind of wanted to make out with it.ā
Bitty laughs and squeezes Jackās hand again. He sits up and pokes Jack in the chest. āWell, itās good I kept a piece, huh?ā
They race each other to the kitchen. Jack loses his footing at the end of the hall because heās still wearing one sock so he doesnāt get the first bite.Ā
And everything that happens after that is decidedly unwholesome.

BWAHAHAHA I was JUST thinking about this.
i think i found my evening internet project, lol.Ā the kicker is going to be designing the falconerās logo when we havenāt really had a good look at it in canon.Ā i can basically make a patch of anything using fabric and applique, but iād like to see a bit more detail before i try to do a falconer logo from scratch.

yeah man. while i can appreciate a nice dick or two, possibly even three, 25 unasked for dicks is not my idea of a good time, so generally anything to do with dick pics usually makes me cringe now, haha.

turifer replied to your post: āAre you one of those list-makers who keeps lists of your lists?...ā:
There's no shame in a list of lists. I myself keep a spreadsheet with many sheets and have a specific list-making app that I use all the time.
I have tried this so, so many times, but I seem to falter when I start organizing the lists. Maybe my mind is not systematic enough to handle the categorization? I seem to do better when... oh, I know. I bet itās because I freeze up over priorities; when itās just a general list of general crap to do, I seem to pick and choose according to time/mood - like a buffet.
