Flag of Micronesia
Aspect Ratio 10:19
The flag of Micronesia was adopted in 1978. The design of the flag is inherited from the flag of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands (TTPI), a UN trust territory administered by the United States from 1947 to 1986. The islands of Micronesia were part of the TTPI along with the Marshall islands, Palau, and the Mariana Islands, and each district had it's own star, totaling six. By the late 1970's the US ended it's administration and most of the districts became independent. The islands of Micronesia became independent in 1986, but had adopted their own flag by 1978. The flag reduced the stars of the TTPI flag to four, representing the islands of Chuuk, Pohnpei, Kosrae, and Yap, arranged in a compass-like fashion. The blue background of the flag represents freedom and loyalty.
