I've got a headcannon for the three small stars. What if they interrupted Sci in the middle of one trying to make the cure for Dream, and Ink, being Ink, of course messes it up. It splatters on both him and Blue, and then that causes the escape portal he makes to lead them to Error, who drops them off at Nightmares like the anti-social hermit he is. Plus it could have gotten on Sci for the au where he gets turned into a babybones as well. And for why Sci would be found after Ink and Blue.
Cool headcanon! This sounds like a pretty believable explination for such crazy events lol.
