āI donāt want to be told I canāt do something. Iāll just have a go at it and I may make a terrible mess of it but Iād sooner make a mess than not have a go at all. I donāt think age matters at all. What matters is your determination not to give up and not to stop learning new things, which I absolutely applaud.ā

āEvelyn gets on with life and faces something new, taking on something she's not conversant with ⦠She looks forward, which we all have to remember to keep doing.ā
Judi Dench on playing Evelyn Greenslade in The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
Summary: Douglas and Evelyn are enjoying life in India, their relationship is going steady and they couldnāt be happier. However, as the upcoming wedding between Sonny and Sunaina approaches, Douglas is conflicted on whether he should marry Evelyn, or leave their relationship as it is. No matter what the outcome, their lives will ultimately change. - Based on the TSBEMH trailer.
Notes: I wrote this little ficlet in 2014 when the trailer of The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel was released. It was an idea of what I thought may have happened, but the movie went in a completely different direction. However,Ā I hope you enjoy this little ficlet.
āI Want Toā, can be read under the following cut, or on AO3.
āYou should marry that girl.ā The masculine voice next to Douglas told him.
āI want to.ā He never took his eyes of the woman in front of him now walking away as she went to her work.
āThen why donāt you? You clearly love the woman.ā
Douglas wished it were as easy as that. There was no denying he loved Evelyn deeply, more so than he had ever loved Jean, but would she want to go through another marriage, more importantly, would he want to go through one again himself. They werenāt exactly young anymore; they had met their fair share of the world. Perhaps it would be better to leave their relationship as it is.
āI do, but I think marriage is long past us.ā He told the man with regret in his eyes.
āWhat is it you say, grasp everything while you can? Donāt wait any longer, take the risk.ā he patted Douglas on the arm.
āWhat if she says no?ā
āYou wonāt know that until you ask her will you uncle. Now go get your woman.ā
Douglas gave the man a small murmur in thanks and followed after Evelyn, trailing the scooter beside him. The street had gotten slightly busier in the space of a few moments but he could still make her out in the bustle of the small crowd. It didnāt take him long before he was walking next to her.
āWould you care for some company?ā He had no idea why he was nervous they had done this routine on various occasions.
He felt his heart stop when she turned to look at him a loving smile, āI think I would like that.ā
They continued to walk in silence at a leisurely pace, with Douglas giving her a sideways glance now and again. He marveled in how the sun would shine off of her giving her an almost ethereal appearance, she was beautiful.
āSo, tell me. What were you discussing with your new friend?ā She glanced towards him the smile still on her face.
āHe was telling me how lucky I was to have a girl like you.ā He partly lied, it wasnāt far from the truth.
Evelyn felt herself flush, it had been a long time since she had been called a girl, but she did like the sound of being Douglasā. When she came to India, she didnāt expect things to turn out the way that they had done. Especially finding love again at her age. She thought she was long past that stage, but Douglas had proven that thought wrong.
āI see.ā She gave him a mischievous smile. āWell, I guess Iām lucky to have a boy like you.ā
Douglas gave a side smile, āI think that makes me feel slightly younger.ā
Evelyn let out a small laugh, āOnly slightly. We certainly wouldnāt be referred to boy and girl anywhere else I donāt think.ā
āYes, youāre probably right there. It is rather amusing.ā
āQuite. It has to be one of the many things I love about India, no matter how old you are, everyone thinks you can achieve anything and age is irrelevant. I suppose in a way it is. Youāre only as old as you feel as one says.ā
He could feel his heart become lighter at her words. She may not be set against the idea of marriage, should he decide to ask her. There was still the nagging doubt if things would remain the same between them or change. After all, the both of them had their fair share of not having the greatest of marriages, but this time he had a feeling it would be different.
Being with Evelyn made him feel complete as if a part of him had been missing for years. If he had met her when they were both younger, who knows how their lives would have turned out. They no longer had their younger years, those were long gone, but the had now. As he watched her walk beside him, her hand brushing his, he made the decision that he would take the risk and ask her. Whatever happened afterward they could deal with together.
āThatās true, I know Iāve felt younger in the past few months.ā
āFunnily enough, me as well.ā Evelyn agreed.
They both stopped as they had reached Evelynās work, watching the young workers make their way inside the building.
āIāll see you tonight, although tea will have to be a miss.ā She looked up at him only to see Douglasā confused look causing her to shake her head fondly.
āWe promised we would help with Sonnyās and Sunainaās wedding preparations. Their wedding is tomorrow after all.ā
Douglas almost forgot they had promised to help out, he couldnāt believe it was nearly their wedding day already.
āYes, right. So, Iāll pick you up when youāre finished.ā He leaned down and gave her a small kiss on the lips.
She gave him one last smile and made her way towards the building, before stopping and turning to look back towards him.
āYou had best get a move on, youāre going to be late for your own work- again.ā
He looked down at his watch and noticed she was right; he started at eight it was now going on quarter to. Getting on his scooter, he started it up and gave her a wave as she watched him disappear from her line of vision.
Evelyn watched him go, biting her lip to hold back the grin she felt wanting to break free. Turning around, she continued her way into the building looking forward to what tonight and their future would bring. It seemed everything had turned out all right in the end after all.
Evelyn GreensladeĀ | The (Second) Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2012/2015)
āFor this is what the young make us remember; that in the end itās all very simple, that all it takes is to look into someoneās eyes and say yes, this is what I want. And for them to reply, āitās what I want too, and thereās nothing to be afraid of.ā

I know Iāve asked this before, but is there seriously no way I can watch The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel online? Iāve been waiting for months and I canāt find it anywhere
Another observation about TSBEMH. This one contains a huge spoiler, although itās very much my own interpretation. Donāt read if you havenāt seen the movie yet and donāt want to be spoiled!
This may be an unpopular opinion but I really feel like the letter Muriel reads at the end was her goodbye letter and that the images we see of her at the end are her saying goodbye to everything before she takes matters into her own hands. I think euthanasia is so important and this movie handles it so well and so beautifully. Maggieās whole story is so touching and so important, I feel like flying to the UK to hug Ol Parker and personally thank him for this.Ā
