What do you think are taylor’s most underrated vs most overrated songs from each era
oooh i love this. obviously everyone's answer will be different, but i'm going to take into account general/fan popularity and quality. so it might not be the least (or most!) listened to, but on account of deserving it. (for example, "all too well" might be famous as hell, but it deserves every bit of praise.) let's go. i'll do it most underrated vs. most overrated, like you said.
taylor swift -- underrated: stay beautiful (or tim mcgraw or mary's song) / overrated: picture to burn (though it's fun)
fearless -- underrated: the way i loved you / overrated: mr. perfectly fine (cheating because fearless is fabulous and underrated at this point)
speak now -- underrated: haunted / overrated: y'all will hate me but long live makes me emo so imma pass.
red: -- underrated: treacherous (and title track) / overrated: none. wanegbt? does anyone even rate her? lol.
1989 -- underrated: i wish you would (and this love) / overrated: i know places (among fans)
lover -- underrated: paper rings / overrated: miss americana (though it hit at the opening of eras, not the most popular song but theres a reason for that)
folklore -- underrated: the 1 / overrated: the lakes
evermore -- underrated: tis the damn season (also happiness and kinda rwylm because it's perfect) / overrated: no body, no crime and willow and long story short (but they're fun!)
midnights -- underrated: labyrinth highkey (lowkey hits different) / overrated: mastermind, vigilante shit (not the live performances tho)
ttpd -- underrated: peter, the albatross, cososom / overrated: the alchemy, ttpd, but daddy i love him
tloas -- underrated: tloas (because i listened to the acoustic version recently and didn't mind it), maybe ruin the friendship? / overrated: most of the album

I guess well just have to agree to disagree but its possible that the marketing compared to the final album + the other songs are souring me on this one more than would have happened otherwise lol. I was also listening to sour and guts at the same time and I was digesting to showgirl as well as speak now and that might have contributed to the ick I felt. I do think ruin the friendship is the best song comparatively on the album even though I think ophelia and Elizabeth Taylor are more fun when I dont think about the lyrics
oh and that's fair. i was super excited by the Look of the album, the photoshoot, the vibes, and let down by the music. a lot of people like or love it and a lot of people enjoy it despite it not living up to expectations and a lot of people just don't like it. and oh yeah speak now is such a different album lol as is olivia's stuff, i got into her a lot more last year (not every song, but select songs i quite love). yeah the lyrics are a letdown on a lot of them lol. i'm the same with tbh most of the tracks on the album are boppy enough but lyrically even if not bad there's something offputting in there To Me. but yes to ophelia and elizabeth taylor (huge bop), opalite is a bop, unfortunately wood is too lol
okay does that stay an interesting song or a moral exercise? not that something can't be both, but idk what we're expecting here
Tbf she did market this album as having the lyricism of folklore (including evermore in this) so that’s the expectation I’m holding it to lol.
Not every song needs to be a moral exercise but if it’s going to be a bad girl song (like avril girlfriend or ariana break up with your girlfriend) it need to be a fun bop and/or straight up unapologetic imo not mournfully singing about how you shouldn’t feel bad about being a home wrecker especially when a lot of her discography is hitting back at cheaters and liars. Or at least add a verse that just addresses the implications of the topic she’s bringing up. Especially because another lyric in the album is about how we’ve all taken someone else’s man lol and I think it’s a regression compared to other songs in her discography.
I think getaway car is an example or where she does it well it’s very honest about the messiness of that situation and not self victimising or glazing over personal responsibility while still owning her choices and that’s still a fun bop while being nuanced.
oh yeah on the lyricism of showgirl, like, it's my least favorite album of hers. it's not terrible but it's not up to her standards overall. some clever lyrics here or there but nothing great. i do get that.
i mean, i think there's also the thing of... she also has cheated on people as well as been cheated on. and she writes about those experiences differently. as do most people! hell as do most people who do that in real life. it's always different when it's you/when it's happening to you. a lot of folklore-ttpd is dealing with having cheated, either emotionally or physically or both, as well as having that happen to you. of sort of understanding the mess that you can create too or that two or more can create? i agree that getaway car was a big first in a way, but it's also addressed in style (you're seeing other people and so am i; not dating but not not dating lol). new romantics dances with this too. folklore has again cardigan/illicit affairs (lmao)/betty/hoax (imo) then evermore vaguely addresses it (long story short, coney island in a way), midnights of course. i guess you could compare bejeweled to a watch yourself or pop girl anthem and high infidelity of course and question. ttpd starting off strong with fortnight! fresh out the slammer, guilty as sin, chloe et al, i look in people's windows, the bolter, etc. and some of those are very well written and nuanced and good and idk. i don't think every song has to see everything from every perspective.
so i don't see ruin the friendship as a regression but a continuation? i still wish it were better written + produced because it's like... almost a very good song but still is evocative and nostalgic and has its message which is what she wanted? and idk hell i went and reread the lyrics and first verse/chorus. he has gf and she doesn't wanna mess it up. second time she does but a shitty one and he doesn't wanna mess it up. it's literally all right person, wrong time, and then the time passes. like idk there have been about a thousand (way lowball) movies and shows made about this with teenagers and then one of them either gets married or dies and it's because... it happens. even tho it never went further than friendship. idk we may have to agree to disagree bc i feel like i'm getting defensive when i don't even think it's that good of a song but there isn't even any cheating involved lol
i also think most people are hypocrites including her and me and probably everyone in one way or another but yeah of course she is angrier at people cheating on her than she is about cheating on someone else (both of which have happened... several times at least in her life). as are most people and is that hypocritical? yes! but also typical lmao idk it's a feeling not a fact iohsdflk and holding someone to what they said or felt at 16 or 23 or 27 is idk. i agree i prefer nuance and more mature writing or better writing but idk? i feel like she's explored this a LOT over the years and with a lot more understanding. yeah when she wrote should've said no when she was 15/16 after just getting cheated on for the first time, she was pissed. and she's been the other woman or jumped from guy to guy as an escape hatch. as do a lot of people i fear lol and she's been surprisingly honest about this because it isn't necessarily flattering to her and some people judge it a lot but it's very common. or wondering what could happen if it were the right time and you and your friend weren't always seeing somebody else.
anyway about regression, i think showgirl is kinda a regression lyrically overall made to... make bops and prove she can hit 1989 levels of success again and she has with it so like mission accomplished. not as good as 1989 To Me but idk lisnjk again i think she's being honest in some ways! she has taken men idkslhidk
With ruin the friendship I get the intended message but it could have been a more interesting song if it had actually delved into the nuances of that then, choosing to be selfish and go for what you want then though you know it’s not right or you might hurt someone else in the process. What you owe to yourself vs what you owe to others/ruin the friendship better that than regret it - like what are the implications of this line lol.
Is it worth it to turn down other life paths and if you can make peace with that in the present but also looking at your past. I thought ‘‘tis the damn season did that type of limerance well.
i get where you're coming from. i guess i sort of am like okay does that stay an interesting song or a moral exercise? not that something can't be both, but idk what we're expecting here. sometimes we do wrong by others or at least think about it and regret not acting when we could have. you belong with me/speak now (song)/girl at home/i knew you were trouble/style and so on and folklore and on is riddled with it: cardigan/exile/august/illicit affairs/better/etc and high infidelity/bejeweled/question and of course the #controversial guilty as sin with, "am i allowed to cry?" idk. i agree ruin the friendship isn't thattt deep but idk. it all exists in regret and wondering, like chloe or sam or sophia or marcus in that way, except with no way of Ever knowing.
agreed about tis the damn season, it's near the top of her entire discography for me and definitely evermore. "the road not taken looks real good now and it always leads to you in my hometown!!!" ugh so good.
what you mentioned about repetitive themes. you can write 100 stories or songs about high school and in every one of them have something different and meaningful to say about the characters the experiences people have, or wrapping up adult experiences in metaphor or reflecting on them through a teen lens, but I dont think her music is really introspective enough, or she isn't introspective enough to come to any meaningful conclusion. ruin the friendship was an interesting experience but im not sure how im supposed to feel about the theme of you should hook up with a guy you know has a girlfriend just in case he dies in 10 years. cancelled is something you write at 14 on your Tumblr blog with the heading welcome to my dark twisted mind etc.
i agree and that's why stories about teenagers are so prevalent in media. people always are like "why isn't this set in college!" because they have freedom and ostensibly less angst. you're essentially forced to be in school or your parents house until you're an adult. and if you're forced out of those situations, by yourself or being kicked out, you're often kinda fucked by the system that does not see you as a full person with full rights until you're 18. (speaking to the usa anyway.)
i think some of her songs are more introspective than others. she has moments of true clarity and honesty. it's not fully this or that idk that tweet of idk man i think it depends. she's also writing about her life. but yeah i often feel it doesn't go as deep as i'd like but i mean yeah! i'm not really going to her for that but i also usually know what i'm getting. if i want something different i'll listen to another artist sdfnl.
i think that's what a lot of people took away from "ruin the friendship" but not what i did and it's missing the point. without getting into the lore than i know you don't want lol just on the surface, idk, i think it's about... going for what you want, even if it's not the perfect moment. and that could be a boy, or a job, or a dream. it's somewhere between "fifteen" and "you're on your own kid." the production is not my cup of tea so i don't listen to it much, but otherwise, it's probably my favorite song on showgirl lyrically. the production makes it hard to listen to though.
agreed "cancelled!" blows and every song on reputation is better than it. hell, so is every other song on showgirl, i think.

I like your take on the article and I agree, from an artistic perspective I feel like her world is so insular and self referential that it kind of can't exist outside of the Taylor SwiftTM whereas other pop contemporaries and younger artists still feel like they exist within the broader world. I know she rose to fame off of being relatable and being able to package those experiences within her music but at this point her songs don't feel like theyre about heartbreak, but about Taylor SwiftsTM heartbreak etc. I know swfites joke a lot about how much lore she has and while I think thats fun its very mcu-esque in its execution and cant really exist outside of itself (everlore being the exception because it really exists outside of herself narratively (as far as the public knows) and sonically as well).
I hope this doesn't come off as bitchy but I dont think its a coincidence that that albums which as said to be fictional are the most popular critically and mostly within the fandom, because for better or for worse the perception of the artist does influence the perception of their art, and she has capitalised on her own personal life beyond just writing about it and a lot of people just find her annoying and unlikable lmao which goes against you when you sell yourself as a relatable diaristic songwriter. Even most haters will say that they liked Everlore and maybe her early work before she as a celebrity became a conglomerate.
it does all become a snake eating its tail for sure and discussion of the self and relation to fame and stuff definitely has become more prevalent and harder to ignore in her work but i also don't see it as fully like, unrelatable? and i say this as someone who doesn't particularly like showgirl, but i actually think TLOAS is kind of TTPD's inverse. yeah, it's about another side of fame and herself but it's also in a lot of ways a lot more vague and basic and could be about anyone. like, as a fan i know too much and would rather not picture travis Myself even if she does. so like i get it on that count, trust. but i also feel like most artists that write about themselves... write about themselves? hayley's new album highly self-referential. like... all of it. (and it's good!) same with florence's new work, and sabrina often writes about the same things from her witty sassy perspective, and so on. i think it's pretty common the longer a career gets that there will be overlap. i do agree that the whole marketing and salesmanship and mcu (TSCU) of it all is A Lot and i grow to like it less despite knowing literally all of the lore myself by virtue of... being in the fandom most of my life and her career.
like for example, to your point, when i first heard the second verse of "is it over now?" i rolled my eyes a little at the "blue dress on a boat / red blood white snow" part because of her blue dress on a boat riding away from her date with harry. however. in 2025 it became my most listened to song because in spite of and because of those personal details in Taylor Swift's Public Private Life, i related to it so deeply lmao. sometimes you're better without the lore and like "opalite" sure you can look into she and her fiance's dating histories but. you don't have to. it's an upbeat happy little love song.
so like i do agree her world has gotten insular and some themes have gotten repetitive (but... we stay listening to tame impala and lana del rey... so) this isn't even meant to be defensive because i agree and disagree. i think there's good convos to be had about at what point marketing and Brand and being a person incorporated can eclipse Art and how good is art made by billionaires and idk. (this is too long so some is below a cut)
but i do agree about folkmore being super critically and fan acclaimed and like part of it i think is that she was stretching herself creatively as well as narratively. she didn't stick to pure pop/country song structure and was a lot more contemplative and idk i agree less about her but also they were literally all about her too lol just in less obvious ways. and she's sort of employed those things before, just not an a full scale album level. love story, mine, speak now, innocent, stay stay stay, starlight, you are in love, blank space, lwymmd, etc.
there was a good article that came out when ttpd did about how she kind of has backed herself into a corner writing about being girl next door and small towns and americana and using the same references but i haven't been able to find it again. it was a good interesting article but i also think ttpd, with its weak points and skips, is also a good album overall and has some career high songs that are sort of more diaristic and less filtered than folkmore. so not quite as strong but idk the albatross, peter, guilty as sin. wordy but so good. idk i'm gonna end the ramble lol.
is it fair to think of ttpd and the anthology as two separate albums I dont see how that can even be counted as a deluxe
It’s officially a double album. And after reading that entire wiki page (which also notes that folklore and evermore are simultaneous releases, recorded very closely together though distinctly released, etc.) i definitely agree. It’s certainly not a deluxe. Like, Midnights: 3am (and etc. editions following) is a deluxe album. But yeah The Anthology is definitely a double album. But it’s not exactly a separate album and I see why people count it as the same because it is all one project (just very expanded). Honestly some of my fav TTPD era songs are on The Anthology, but the tracklist of it doesn’t feel very thoughtful (while I think the main album flows well overall)
what do you think about this? https://www.the-independent.com/arts-entertainment/music/features/taylor-swift-opalite-video-easter-eggs-songwriting-b2916039.html
i actually meant to read that article the other day but didn't get the chance and forgot to save it so wow, thank you for sending this.
also... i agree and disagree. (more below the cut because this got so long and rambly and it is past my bedtime)
i agree that showgirl is solipsistic and also that she has kind of always had that tendency. i agree that folklore is overall her best album, but right there in "cardigan" she retells peter pan, as she does again in "peter," which is one of the best-written songs on ttpd. her breakthrough hit was "love story," in which she retold romeo and juliet, based on her parents not liking her crush/boyfriend when she was 17. i don't feel moved by "the fate of ophelia," but i'm surprised it's gotten sooo many people sooo pressed when she's literally just made up shit about shakespeare before. but i also get that it's different when you're 16 and 36. and that teenage antics and football boy obsessions after writing "fifteen" so many years ago and ishlfdjkslinfa yeah. i get where they're coming from!
Swift’s penchant for self-referentiality and meta-narratives makes her music seem impenetrable to casual listeners, and the artist herself overly insular. With the exception of a loose narrative about the lengths people will go to in their search for “the one”, the video for “Opalite” has very little to say. Instead, it feels like another vehicle for Swiftian world-building – less an expression of artistic intent and more like a self-mythologising sales technique.
funnily, i thought the video for "opalite" was actually her best in a very long time. possibly her best self-directed video. it felt cohesive and not overly silly despite also being quite silly??? idk. it reminded me of the "you belong with me" music video. yeah, with more easter eggs. i also think that the easter egging of it all is annoying but i also kind of think that... it being among the most popular music on the planet kinda negates that it's impenetrable for casual listeners. it actually makes it kind of annoying for me as a career-long fan because i'd rather know less about her football boyfriend and his magic dick! but like i see videos and physically in person people and kids and adults dancing to her music, new and old, and i just don't see this as very true. like, i do get it, and i think within fandom it's true that people are lazy and refuse to do deep dives anymore, perhaps especially with taylor, because yes, there IS so much lore you had to be there for (but much of it is still documented on the internet and in books and shit) and idk. new fans make stuff up! it feels respectfully like an online take. and also so many people know about her life idshfl more than i want to! but i also love discussing it! idk! even if i hated this video i do kinda feel like idk. it's both true and it isn't. i do think it makes for boring art on the whole, and it's not just a her problem, it's marvel and a whole new generation of online fandom stuff right and filmmaking. but idk. idk!
nitpicking and naysaying aside. they have points! the end is absolutely cutting, and worth observing, i fear!
Instead, Swift’s sole point of reference has become herself. Alone at the pinnacle of pop supremacy and consumed by her evidence board of easter eggs, she has lost her once-tenacious grip on the pen she used to expertly wield. The result is not only a lack of quality music, but, worst of all, a glut of boring art. Someone of Swift’s talents can do better. As it stands, she seems to have forgotten that there’s more to being a showgirl than simply existing in the spotlight.
i do also think that her next album or the one after that will be a sort of... once again, a complete right turn! as she does! it's wild how much there is to say about her idk. but i will continue to, too!
here's the article:
Swift is often an exceptional storyteller and a brilliant pop star, which is why the hollow creativity of her ‘Opalite’ music video is so fr
