British Edwardian Truncheon, Dated 1902, Presented to Joseph Eadson for Apprehending a Poultry Thief
An Edwardian polychrome-painted and gilt-highlighted truncheon, Burnley, dated 1902, presented to Joseph Eadson for apprehending a poultry thief. Painted with the Imperial Crown above the initials 'ER' and the Burnley City Coat of Arms and motto, the gilt words 'PRESENTED TO J. EADSON FOR HIS GALLANT CONDUCT IN THE ARREST (SINGLE HANDED) OF A NOTORIOUS CRIMINAL 6 MAY 1903', with a turned and knopped handle, 38 cm long.
Under the headline 'Alleged Theft of Poultry', the Burnley Gazette reported on the 10th May 1902 that 'William Parker, a weaver, was charged with the theft of a hen and twelve chickens, valued at 27s., the prosecutor being Joseph Eadson a wine and spirit merchant, who has a hen-pen near his residence in Padiham Road - Prosecutor the previous night heard a disturbance in his pen, and on visiting it he caught the prisoner, who had twelve of his chickens in a bag. He was in the act of putting another chicken in the bag. He had a hen also in a bag. When charged, prisoner made no reply. Prisoner had other convictions against him, and was committed to the next Quarter Sessions.'
Reporting on these Quarter Sessions later in the year (26th July 1902) under the headline 'A Desire for Poultry', the Burnley Express remarked, 'William Parker (45), weaver, pleaded guilty to stealing one hen and twelve chickens, the property of Joseph Cadson [sic], on 6th May...Mr Wingate-Saul, for the prisoner...made an earnest appeal for leniency to the Recorder. Parker, he said, had tried to lead an honest life, and before that offence had been suffering very much from depression. Prisoner's wife was strongly of the opinion that had her husband been in normal health at the time, he would never have done what he did. A sentence of one month's imprisonment was passed to the prisoner.'
