Good people,
Americans enjoy a rather clean environment. We mostly take it for granted. But contaminants in our environment (air and water especially) can lead to various diseases, birth defects, cancers, strokes, and heart attacks. Â The EPA, while a whipping-post for some people, deserves a lot of the credit for helping make our environment much cleaner as shown (first link below) in historical charts of air quality and emissions since 1980. Â And toxic smog mid-century clouded many cities, suburbs, and western vistas. Â You can deny the remarkable record, but it's there anyway to read about in history: from addressing DDT to lead in paint and gas to the polluting of rivers, lakes, and wetland habitat to greenhouse gases to greater fuel economy for cars to cleaning hazardous superfund sites to airborne mercury and smog.... For an example of pollution cleaned up, just in the period 1980-2015, while vehicle miles traveled increased 106%, aggregate emissions of six common pollutants decreased by 65%. Â These trends don't happen because of the beneficence of businesses! The EPA is not alone in its efforts but nonetheless a major driver. For the sake of our children and grandchildren, their health and quality of life, please speak up in favor of retaining a vigilant, vigorous EPA.... Â There are thousands of businesses but only one federal EPA. Â If not EPA, then WHO? Â
