#Scouts of the 21st Century. ==>#Repost @scoutdaddy70 ・・・ "The Modern Boy Scout" After keeping them hidden on the first night, the Scouts pull out their phones around the camp fire on the last night of our 2017 Klondike. The day has been filled with competitions and #Troop417 is one of only two troops left, all others returned home after the event, but the troop has made a tradition of camping the entire winter camping event weekend. These #BoyScouts had brought home a first place win in the knot tying contest, Are You a Knot Head?, by tying the 5 knots correctly (granny knot, sheepshank, bowline, square, & taut line hitch), and then, late after dinner, alone on the camp field, they search their calendars to add upcoming Order of the Arrow camp dates & next meeting schedules. Scouts learned that yes, the phones can provide entertainment with games, music, videos and various apps, but they are also great tools for scheduling, apps for wildlife identification, star gazing, knot tying, even merit badge pamphlets. They can hold address books to keep contact info for new friends, new Scout leaders, camp directors, & more. The Modern Boy Scout is here, and to paraphrase Lord Baden-Powell, use the right bait; cell phones can be beneficial to a trained Scout if they are taught that although it is in many ways a "toy", it can be an effective "tool".
