Agencies and Labels
I have received a few questions on the topic of labels and agencies, seems like many people are a bit confused. So I thought I would sum up the most important infos to provide an overview of the situation. I am by no means an expert in this field so take everything with a grain of salt. Here’s the gist of it.〈(•ˇ‿ˇ•)-→
The girls are signed up with their respective talent agencies that provide artist management services. Typically, talents in Japan are employed by their agencies so they are pretty much a regular employee receiving some sort of salary (depending on the contract). In exchange for providing a stable support system (the “stable” and “support” being debatable) agencies usually own most - if not all - rights to the creative content of their talents.
Wakana: Space Craft Group
Hikaru: Hifumi,Inc.
Keiko: Tristone
They are releasing music under the following labels:
Wakana: Victor Entertainment
Hikaru: NBCUniversal Entertainment ❇
Keiko: Avex Trax
[❇ Hikaru’s album “H-el-ical//” has been released by her agency]
In addition to releasing music, labels will often take on various management duties such as doing a lot of the promotional work (see for example Keiko’s Official Website with Avex or Wakana’s Official Website with Victor).
As expected from Keiko, she ended up with the biggest agency and biggest label. This will definitely give her solo career a huge push. Not that she really needed it but oh well. Hopefully she won’t let herself be commercialised too much, that would be a shame.
Yesterday I was asked why it didn’t surprise me that Keiko ended up with such big and powerful companies. Let me explain myself. I think it’s a combination of different factors. For one, she is very ambitious so she definitely wouldn’t settle for something small. Go big or go home, right? Secondly, Keiko probably has a lot of good connections and knows how to network. Last but not least, out of the three Kalafina members, Keiko has the highest potential of selling well on the market. It pains me to say it but objectively speaking it’s a fact that her looks provide major advantages. Big companies would be more than willing to have her sign up with them.
