Hands. Nien offered hers as the answer after I mustered every morsel of courage in the world to confess after an exceptionally boring class.Â
âHuh? ThatâŠyourâwait! Really?â
âYeah! Thatâs what people do when theyâre dating, right?â she giggled with the brightest smile Iâve ever seen on a person. I tentatively gave my hand, but Nien grabbed it and dragged me along with her. âCome on, letâs have lunch!âÂ
âWhoaâhey! Wait, I havenât packed my stuff yet!â
Nien cackled and did a U-turn, flunking me towards my desk. âBetter be quick or Iâm gonna eat you instead, sugarpie!â
âGot it. Give me a minuâsugarpie?âÂ
âMhm. You asked me out so sweetly and you got a big round head, soâŠsugarpie!â she snickers, drawing a circle in the air with both hands. I chuckle in amazement, nodding. âI guess thatâs me.â
âHurry up!â
âOkay!â
***
Hands. I held Nienâs throughout and after she cried from nervousness and anxiety a few days before our wedding.
âWhyâd you say yes?â
âHm?â she mumbled, curled up on my chest.Â
I gently wiped away some of her dried tears. âWhy did you say yes to, wellâŠmy proposal? JustâŠcurious.â
Her mouth tugged side-to-side in thought before blooming into a small, warm smile. âYou feelâŠhmmâŠpeaceful.â
âPeaceful? Me?â I laughed.
Nien nodded. âYouâŠI feelâŠI know I donât have to be afraid of anything beside you. Even when I do bad things. You donât hesitate to set me straight, without any judgement.â Her hand rose to caress my cheek, then poked at it softly. âI can be anything, everything, or nothing. When youâre beside me, my heart is at peace.â
Hatiku damai, jiwaku tentram di sampingmu.
I could feel my heart thumping harder, Nien likely could as well by how she was grinning. My cheeks bloomed warm as I cupped hers, leaning down for a kiss. âIâm gonna marry you again, I swear.â
âWe havenât even married once, you silly!â she giggled into my lips.
âDonât care. I love you that much.âÂ
Nien kissed me this time. âI love you too, sugarpie.â
***
Hands. Nien held mine as she nursed them after I opened a suspicious package that was meant for her, which turned out to be a small firebomb.
âThose assholes,â she huffed, her eyes blazing. âUsing these old ass scare tacticsâwhat do they think this is, 1960?â
âOuch!â
âSorry, sorry!â She blew on my burnt hand softly.Â
âItâs okay, honey. It wasnât your fauââ
âNo, itâs not okay!â she snarled, her jaws trembling before she started sobbing. âThoseâŠfucking Vulpes thugs would rather do this shit than actually admit their atrocities. Think theyâre above everyone else.â She sniffled and wiped her nose with her elbow.
âWell, Iâm one journalist they wonât silence. I wasnât gonna stop, but now they hurt my sugarpie? Iâm gonna skin them alive. Iâm gonna be even louder.â
âHoney, isnât thatâŠdangerous?âÂ
âThatâs exactly what they want,â she gritted. âWant me to be scared. Fuck that.â She gets back to treating my burns. âYou believe in me, donât you?â
I sighed. âIâm still a bit concernedâŠbut, I do. All the way. Fuck them up, honâow!â I tried to raise a fist. Nien whined, slapping my back. âWhat are you doing? Youâre still hurt!â
âYeah, forgot,â I snickered. âYouâre really hot when youâre mad, by the way.â
Nien couldnât help but laugh, slapping me softer and pulling in to peck my lips. âYou silly, beautiful man.â
âTakes one to know one.â

Hands. I was jumping in place to surprise Nien and hold hers as her train pulled onto the platform. As I looked around for her among the disembarking passengers, I heard a woman scream.
âHELP!â
I didnât think twice before running to the car it came from. âWhatâs going on?â I asked a passenger crowding around something.Â
âI think someoneâs hurt, Iâm not sure.â
I pushed past the crowd, and my heart dropped. Nien was on the floor, half conscious, her lower torso stained deep red. Her head rested on the lap of a woman quietly sobbing, her hands also stained as it pressed on Nienâs stomach. âWhatâŠwhatâwhat happened? IâIâm her husband, please tell me!â
âI donât know!â she cried, shaking her head. âShe was standing next to me, and there wasâŠlike this, this group that came in and bumped into us.â She sniffled and swallowed. âThen they got off here, and thenâŠand then she just collapsed!â
âOh my GodâŠhoney. Nien, honey! Can you hear me?â I held her cheek and turned her face towards me. âDidâdid you call an ambulance yet?â
âI didâŠtold the driver toâto stop the train, too.â
âDid you, umâŠhere, let me.â I took over putting pressure on Nienâs wound. âYou remember anyone from thatâŠthe ones who bumped into you?â
The woman bawled, shaking her head. âNo! Iâm sorry sir, I didnâtâit wasâŠIâm sorry!â
I nodded and leaned closer to Nien. âNien, honey. Hey, Iâm here. Can you hear me?â
She stirred weakly, her voice airy and thin. âSugarpie?â
âYeah, me! Sugarpie!â Tears started falling. âHelp is on the way, so stay awake for me, okay? I wonât go anywhere, I promise. Just stay with me, please.â
Nienâs lips curved into a frail smile, her bloody hand floating up to my cheek. âSugarpieâŠâ
âMhm, what is it, hon?â
She didnât answer, only opening her eyes a bit wider to look at me. Her smile grew just a bit, then started to wilt away as her breath slowed.Â
âHoney? Hey! Donâtâstay with me! Donât you dare! Stay with me, Hsu Nien Tzu! Donâtââ I choked. âDonât leave me aloneâŠpleaseâŠâ
Her featherlight breaths slowed down more, then stopped completely. The light behind her glossy brown eyes dwindled, then faded into emptiness.Â
âNo, no! Nien! Honey! Wake up!â My hand moved from her wound to catch her hand sliding away from my cheek. I gripped it harder than ever, sobbing profusely. âWake up, pleaseâŠâ
Hands. That was the last time mine held hers. And I would do anything to hold it just once more.

a/n: yeah, this one's gonna be a bit sadder than the last. I don't know what else to say, tho don't say I didn't warn you lmao. but I hope you like(?) it. more notes at the end.
Junghoon sighed amidst the cold, empty hallway of the buildingâs second floor, opening Room 238 with his spare key.
The clock struck 08:00 A.M. October 12, 2023. Thursday.
He entered the club's room. Before opening the door, his thoughts circled around one wish: for everything to be the same. The room welcomes him with the same scent of air mixing with the old dusty wooden interior and the couch that hasnât been sat on yet.
But he knew too well⊠Everything else didnât feel the same.
No one else is there. He understood why some of the members are not yet ready, but he wanted to keep the room as tidy and comfortable to be inâas it was in the last few weeks. Everyone just returned from a holiday week, after all, which in some way, felt too short.
On most days, he would see Xinyu mingling beside Sohyun on the couch, with Nien being their third wheel from the side, goofing around. Seoyeon stayed the least out of them due to her active council matters, but her guidance remains with her rules and messages with the rest of the club. On the table, Yubin scrolled through TikTok on her phone in front of her laptop with cackles, and tries to show the reels to Dahyun, while the latter herself did her best to concentrate on her own studies, if sheâs not playfully threatening her with a fist, if she didnât make up her mind. It was simple and calming.
Aside from him being the first one to get into the club room, it simply felt empty without anyone sitting on the couch and reading some of the books from the shelves or sitting on their table. He could still recall Sohyun organizing and editing her new music mixes on her laptop with her close friends. Now, half of the shelf is emptied out and littered with dust, yet he recognizes that some of these books are still hers. Most of them, in fact. The rest of the girls rarely read here, unless theyâre bored the hell out of their mind or sleepy.
There was no doubt she admired influential foreign authors and artists. She even taught Junghoon about some of their philosophies while comparing them to Eastern schools of thought. Even in her early twenties, Park Sohyun already proved herself to be a woman of many wonders. But so many more unanswered questions erupted from within him.
Placing his items on the table before picking up the vacuum cleaner on the corner of the room, he canât help but remember his last meeting with her. He plugs the device on the nearest extension, before turning it on. As Junghoon aimed the hose and nozzle on the floor, he pondered about that day, when she told him about her plans. Two weeks ago.
= = =
âNoonaâŠâ Junghoon faces her as sheâs sitting on the dining table. âWhy arenât you telling anyone else about this?â It was a Saturday evening when she paid him a visit.
âI donât want the girls to worry too muchâŠâ she sighs with her eyes forcibly closed shut, much to Junghoonâs concern. He felt she doesn't even want to face him out of shame, as her grip on her mug of coffee tightens, unfazed by its warmth. âItâs better this way.â
âBut theyâre your friends! Theyâre supposed to worry about this... Weâre supposed to care about whatever you do. Wherever youâre going, you gotta let us know.â
Especially after how she helped him open up about his grandma, she knows heâs right.
âIâI know,â she stammers. âBut Iâm leaving tonight. Thereâs no point in telling the girls now⊠Not when theyâre home with their families⊠This shouldnât add to their concerns. And Iâm really sorry that Iâm giving it all to you. This burdenâŠâ
âNo, itâs okay, noona. I understand what you mean, and itâs okay that youâre telling me first. It must be hard for you to keep it from everyone else. But I still think you should at least tell Xinyu-sunbae about this. This will break her heart more if she doesnât know.â
What made the situation much more heartbreaking was it was the holidays in Korea. Chuseok lasted five days where most people went to their hometowns and celebrated with their families until the following week. That weekend, Junghoon stayed home, in the boarding house with his grandma where Sohyun decided to pay him a sudden visit out of nowhere, much to his surprise.
Sohyun took in what her friend had said for a second. Heâs right, but what if she just ends up hating me? Whatâs even the point if Iâm leaving anyways? Shit. In her brief silence, she looks at him with a gloomful expression; water crawling out of her eyes.
She holds his hand with both her hands. âJunghoon-ahâŠâ
âWhat is it?â he awaited whatever she'll say to him next. A request. A plea. A promise.
âPromise me something. And I know itâs too much for me to ask, just because youâre still in the club. But if you canââ
âOf course, noona⊠You can ask me anything, really. I donât mind.â
Her voice weakens. âPlease look after the Mad Money Club⊠Look after Xinyu-yah.â
Looking after the whole club? That shouldnât even be a question to Junghoon. The club has basically been a second family to him. He couldnât be more grateful to be with them. But keeping an eye on her girlfriend? Even that was too much of a responsibility for him. However, never in Junghoonâs life has he said ânoâ to any loved oneâs request, especially if he owed them a lot. Sohyun helped him get through the first year of his college life.
The situation has become even more disheartening now that Sohyun began to break down in tears in front of him. He didn't know her as much as he thought he did.
Breaking through his hesitation, Junghoon slightly opened up his arms and held onto his sunbae, even if he was not sure how she wouldâve taken it. Still, in her sadness, she understood his kind intention and in her desperation, she accepted his warm embrace.
Despite still being in disbelief about her suddenly leaving, he slowly patted her on the back. âI will, noona⊠I wonât leave them behind.â Sohyun let out her tears within their embrace. From the window of the kitchen, Junghoonâs halmeoni observed the two with a soft sigh. A part of her more youthful intuition wished she could do something to keep things lightened up and cheerful, but she also realized, thatâs life.
And now that she has finally asked him to do something for her, itâs the least he could do as she leaves them. This may be the last time he sees her in person. What else can he do?
= = =
He still understood that Sohyunâs choice was not simply due to âfresher opportunities.â While itâs true, most of the pressure was applied by her parents. People he hasn't met.
Still checking on the club from time to time, Junghoon still wished that things turned out differently. Everyone else felt the same way, but they knew that dwelling into it would only prolong the misery thatâs still embedded deep in their hearts and minds.
When Sohyun left for the club was the start of how much had changed⊠And though he no longer needed money, thanks to his newer part-time gigs outside campus, Junghoon still chose to stay as a part-time member of the Mad Money Club by mainly assisting the members with any errands or collaborative organization projects as he managed to earn enough money to support both himself and his grandmother with their boarding house.
She spent the remainder of the semester trying to push away even her fellow clubmates. In the later weeks of October, Xinyu would go to some of her acquaintancesâ gatherings. Drinking at bars and partying at nightclubs after classes. She was the most vulnerable. She was also vulnerable to thieves and creeps, even though she had a history of being a âwilderâ freshman, as Seoyeon and Nien remembered. But, it was thanks to her closest friends that they still looked after their now eldest member, even if it âannoyedâ Xinyu.
âThatâs enough, unnie,â admonished Nien as she took the empty shot glass from her.
âNien-ah,â Xinyu snatched it back, although she doesnât fill it up. âDonât tell me youâre being all grumpy now when you used to be the life of the party when we were freshies.â
After all, the Mad Money Club is more than just a club to them. If they couldn't talk her out of going outside at night, each member would take turns coming along with Xinyu.
âWe canât always babysit you, especially when youâre like this,â Seoyeon reprimands through her embittered, yet suppressed sorrow. âNot all of us can!â
âI didnât ask for you to come hereâŠâ she shoots back, raising her voice. âYou two tagged along, which you were welcome to, but I didnât expect you to be such party shitters!â
âLookâŠâ Nien retains the vibe of empathy in her tone, hoping it reached Xinyuâs blatant dismissiveness. âWe know Sohyun-unnie left, and we couldnât do anything about it since that was her parentsâ choice⊠We all lost her⊠The least we can do is wish her the best.â
They rarely fought. And now, they try their best that things donât change between them.
âWhatever,â the older woman sneers, before turning to the bartender for another bottle to fill up her glass with a terror-inducing tipsy gaze, making them comply immediately. Her dismissiveness only triggers another groan and sigh from the two as they leave her from the sidelines, while they watch her wallow into her liquor. âDonât follow meâŠâ
The two maintain their watch over Xinyu. From her stool, Nien slightly arched her back, staring at the ceiling, with both her elbows leaning onto the counter, before letting out a minty exhale, like a dragon who lost its fume. âSeoyeon-ie⊠You know this is gonna be a problem for us this semester, right? Not just for usâŠâ
Seoyeon groans in agreement, her eyes rolling to the side to steal a glance at their friend. All three of them had entered their senior year, after all. After taking a sip of her glass of sparkling water, she shook the cubes of ice inside her glass before turning to Nien with hesitation. âI, uhh, have an idea, but...â
âI may not like it?â she completes, right before taking a sip of her glass of berry juice. âYou know what? I donât care. Spill it. I mean, whatâs the worst can you say?â

A few days have passed. Junghoon finds himself at the Shin Saimdang Auditorium on a Wednesday afternoon. For him, classes for the day were done, yet his objectives weren't, having gotten himself a new organization to be a part of. On day one, he didn't waste any time and got himself carrying and placing more props from backstage onto the stage for their upcoming production.
Meanwhile, two busybodies observe him from the front row. âSo⊠Whoâs this freshââ
âYou should really stop calling people that, yâknow?â Yuki interrupts her with suspicion.
âWhoâs the new guy?â Hwihyeon raised her voice with irritation. âThere, are you happy?â
âThat oneâs from Xinyuâs little club. Geum Junghoon. Heâs a year our junior, I think.â
âA guy? In her club?â the other woman scoffs. âSince when is that a thing?â
âI had the same question myself⊠âTill now, actually. Can you believe that?â
Hwihyeon darts her eyes above, her head tilting to the right. âI mean, now that I think about it, Daeho did hang out with them more when Mad Money helped us in our Red Book and Laundry stages⊠Remember that?â
âDaehoâs gayâŠâ Yuki reminds her. âAnd our hetero guys who worked with them did not even last ten minutes in the same room. Weâre talking about someone whoâs most likely straight, who has been spending a lot of time with six women for a year now.â
âCome on, Yuki-chan,â Hwihyeon tried to sound more reasonable as her pitch eased up. âHeâs not that bad. Just because a guyâs not your typeââ
âIs he your type?â She raised her eyebrow and the right corner of her lips.
âYahâŠâ Hwihyeon crossed her arms. âHe is cute, but thatâs not relevant hereâŠâ
âSays the one who just said an irrelevant point,â she shoots back.
âMy point is, you barely met him and youâre judgy, especially with his preferences. He might not even be that interested in anyone, and you're being like that.â
Yukiâs quarrelsome confidence is shaken with her next words. With ease, Hwihyeonâs already gotten through her somewhat exaggerated front. âIâm not being judgemenââ
âAnd just to add to my little argument, doesnât the guy who Nien is seeing lately drop by whenever we visit their club⊠Why didnât you mention him before? You got a bias prââ
âFine!â Yuki sighs in defeat, making Hwihyeon chuckle at her dramatic response. âI guess I may have misjudged this guy even though I barely know him. I just couldnât believe theyâre getting more and more progressive⊠At least, in that aspect.â
âNothing wrong with that.â Hwihyein nudged her shoulder with a suggestive smirk. âIf Junghoonâs got friends, you can finally have a little more people for your group dates!â
âI knew your brain would go there, but that's a good point, weirdly enough. But I still think we gotta keep an eye on him. You never know.â
âHe seems too timid for her taste⊠Eh, I doubt heâs got anything fishy. And he was pretty close with Sohyun-ah, too, so I doubt heâd lay a hand on his friendâs ex.â
âThatâs exactly why we should remain cautious! No offense to the guy, but itâs Zhou Xinyu. Compared to him, we know her much, much longer.â
Hwihyeon sighs in irritation, as a second later, curiosity lights up in her eyes, making her move on her feet towards Junghoonâs direction. âFair, but you know what? Iâllââ
Yuki canât help but follow her trail with a sense of panic. âWhat are you doing?â
âYou said we have known Xinyu longer, right?â She asked her with a smirk. âSo why not give him a proper introduction to the rest of our crew ourselves?â
Biting her lower lip in embarrassment, Yuki tries her best to pull her friend away, but Junghoon slowly turns to find them. Their faces slowly welcome him with soft smiles.
Hwihyeon went first, while Yuki maintains her distance beside her. âJunghoon, right?â
âNe.â They exchange a slight bow. âAnnyeonghaseyo, Jo⊠Hwihyeon-sunbaenim?â
âThatâs me!â she chuckled in glee. âNice to meet you. And please, just call me Hwiseo.â
From the distance of the stage above, two other women watched on the three while they became acquainted, prolonging their meeting as they helped with carrying more props.
âWhy didnât any of you turn him down?â Xinyu grumbled beside Jihye, their producer.
âOkay, first of all, heâs proven to be super duper helpful. Heâs got all the skills we need since our sunbaes graduated⊠Plus, we canât say no to your own friendsâ referrals.â
âWeâll need all the help we can get. This is an original play, after all⊠I doubt heâll be needing more homework to familiarize himself with, except for the manuscript.â
âWell, I can't argue with you. I donât know why I even complained to begin with⊠But, you should know heâs not the most comfortable with many people. If that happens heâll lose his focus.â
âHe seems to be doing just fine!â Jihye lightly pats her right shoulder thrice. âWe donât pressure folks who donât want to be disturbed⊠Especially if theyâre one of our own.â
âAs if I have a choice, I still gotta save his skinâŠâ she sighs. âThose two are relentless.â
âIâm sure he can handle himself. Havenât you two been friends for a while now?â
âFriends?â she sneered softly. Thatâs one way of putting it⊠I met him âcause of Sohyun.â
âOhâŠâ Jihye realized exactly who sheâs referring to. A familiar name yet a sensitive subject. âI, uhhh, I didnât mean to make you⊠bring her up, Xinyu-yahâŠÂ MianâŠâ
âItâs fine, Jihye-yahâŠâ Her tone runs colder. âI was just stating a fact. Why be sorry?â
âLook⊠Umm⊠I know things are tough for you now, but if you want some company⊠Someone to talk to, we can pay a visitââ
âJunghoon-ah!â hollered Xinyu, as if she didnât hear another word from her own friend. The young man turned his head at her like a meerkat while she casually jumped down the three-feet stage and walked to them. Hwihyeon and Yuki look at their friend from gazes of curiosity to wariness. She didnât mess around. âThese two bothering you?â
Xinyu and Junghoon were not the closest, but they were always on good terms being in the same club, especially when Sohyun was around. But now that sheâs left, her absence left a vacuum in their club. Junghoon lost a mentor and friend. But arguably, Xinyu had it worse. She was left with a broken heart at the start of fall. With such a sudden painful shift in her life, how can she start over? Without the one she loves? What is there left?
Over time, Junghoon more or less became Xinyuâs âpart-timeâ assistant since Sohyun left for Europe. On weekends, heâs assisted her and the club whenever sheâs had much busier preparations for her stage plays, willingly helping her buy her costumes or help rehearse her lines whenever sheâs not meeting with the rest of her fellow cast and crew.
In turn, Junghoon became somewhat of a momentary member of the Thespians Society production crew to assist Xinyu during their breaks and rehearsals, volunteering to join and help the organization out to keep his promise in any ways he could for two months.
He truly wanted to help her feel better. For Sohyunâs sake. For the Mad Money Club.
âHow was that take?â she asks. âDonât bother sucking up if that's not what you think.â
Heâs the least thespian, though exposure through the clubâs invitations on plays for a few months made him learn a thing or two, if not a little more about stage productions.
âIt is good, sunbae, butâŠâ he gave the best insight he can think of. Thank goodness, he did well in Oral Communication and fairly decent at English Literature. âIf you can add a little bit more the cadence of your voice and some gesture with your expression. Since it's a tragic monologue, perhaps you can imagine yourself after a bad brââ
Oh shit. Too soon. Why did I come up with that kind of example? He instantly thinks to himself with regret, too ashamed to even look her in the eye. You idiot... Fucking great.
âWowâŠâ Xinyu chuckles, yet such a reaction sparks a tremor through Junghoonâs spirit. âYouâre starting to sound like our actual director and assistant. Why did you stop there?â
He lost his words. âIâm sorry⊠I didnât mean to come up with that scenario. We canââ
âI get your point,â Xinyu dismissed his remorse like a hiss, numbing any pressures of her heartbreak with her tone and look of professionalism. âLetâs take it from the top.â She claps her hands, creating a startling thunder around the clubâs room. âAgain.â
Heâs no longer getting paid by working for the Mad Money Club, which he insisted, thanks to his new and more stable part-time jobs outside campus, but as he always reminded himself, he owed all the people there for basically changing his life for the better and would keep owing them with his service and support.
They became more like a third family to him, just like his closest friends are his second.
Especially the promise he made to his sunbae, this is the last time he should never fail the club under any circumstances. That included not letting any of them in harmâs way. Yet that also meant that he had to keep an eye on her, like Seoyeon had asked him to. It was something Xinyu had to put up with. She even brought him elsewhere when no one else was free. Simply to lessen the feeling creeping up on her. That vulnerable loneliness.
Eventually, none of the girls were available to watch her. Because Xinyu didnât tell them this one Friday night. This was a mistake, Junghoon told himself. But heâs already here. After a quick time check on his phone, he assists the woman out of the empty alleyway, but he kept his distance, a foot beside her. He could've alerted the others about her, maybe even called them when she got tipsier, but his attention was locked enough.
âYouâre such a fucking liar, Park SohyunâŠâ she mumbled to herself. âAll those promises. Why canât you even consider that I wanna still be with you. Lots of couples do L.D.R. But youâŠâ She sniffs. âYou beautiful piece of⊠YouâŠâ She started sobbing. âI--I canât believe you would do this to me, Sohyun. I fucking hate you! That IâsnnâLove you⊠So much.â
The more she talked to herself, more questions added up to his sober mind, fueled by the disheartened demon on his left shoulder. Why didnât they keep the relationship going? Who in Godâs name made them think of making that decision? Just why?
But the more hesitant and meticulous angel on his right shoulder kept on shushing him. This is not our business, Junghoon-ah. You were never their matchmaker. Shut up and focus on helping her get home. And by the way, how we you supposed to know wherâ
âXinyu-sunbae, you should really go home now,â he tapped her arm. âItâs getting late.â
âIâm fine, Junghoon-ahâŠâ she sniffed. âI can take care of myself. You can go home now.â
He swallowed his throat, still following her stepped. âI know that, sunbae. But youâre noââ
Xinyu pushed him away and leveled with him. âAnd why are you still here, anyway?â She wiped her tears falling off her chin, while more keep pouring from her eyes. âYour wise and precious Sohyun-noona left and now, you donât have any money to latch on to!â
Junghoon doesnât know what to make of her remark. âThatâs notââ
âThatâs not what?â she raised her voice. âIsnât it why you joined us to begin with? So you can have financial assistance? So we can be your trust fund until you graduate college?â
Sheâs drunk. She doesnât mean it. She probably does. She has a point. Ugh it doesnât matter. Sohyun-noonaâs gonna kill me if sheâs here to witness this. While such words leaving her mouth were induced by the vicious combination of alcohol and heartbreak, Junghoon tried to keep himself together in front of Xinyu. Getting through the stinging sensation as he thought about her words while battling his inner thoughts so he can deal with the more urgent issue at hand. I didnât know she thought of me like that. Or maybe I just didnât want to notice it. But now that I heard those words from herâŠ
âYou gotta go home, Xinyu-noona. Please,â he begs. Sohyun wouldnât want this. This is the last thing she wants. For you to feel this way, he thinks to himself as he saw her in this not so sober situation with caution.
âWho are you calling noona?!â she snaps at him, darting her wrathful face closer at him.
Xinyu lets out a laugh. âThatâs⊠What I thought. HehâŠâ
After taking a few more steps, she turned around him again with a mischievous grin.
âBut then again, I gotta give it to you Junghoon-ah... You've done a lot of good things for us... Our precious little club... I guess I have to thank Sohyun-ah for that⊠Errand boy.â
He shook his head, chuckling at her sudden tease, unaware of her tone. âI just wanted to help you out whenever I can... That was nothing.â
She tilts her head. âWhat happened with you and Nien. Was that nothing to you, too?â
A nerve was struck, maybe more than one. He felt his right fist slowly clenchedâas well the palpitations on the vein of his headâbut his conscience immediately reminded him it was her words that got him to a standstill, with no words to defend himself. He hasn't or wouldn't hit anyone, let alone a woman. Perks of a wallflowering wuss, he pondered.
âYou know, Nien hasn't liked someone that much since... forever... I mean, she was over the moon for you, the chance you went out together. Just the two of you lovebirds... But then of course, you threw that away, after one family emergency.â
It's been months since she started seeing someone. It never bothered him, nor did he make a face that suggested otherwise. But being reminded of that mistake. Right in his face by her heartbroken best friend, his heart begins to sink while its beating imitated the clenching of his hand. Even his own halmeoni encouraged him to go for it, as did Tone, Myungsoo, Dahyun. He had months to listen to his own heart and their words. But he didnât. They treated each other without crossing the boundaries of friendship.
The man forced a soft smile for her to snicker at. âSheâs⊠Happier with someone now. Someone who could give more time and attention to her.â he added a shrug. âAnd I'm happy for them for that, so... I don't know why you have to bring that up now.â
He knows it's no use talking to someone intoxicated, but perhaps it'll help him open up. Breathe a little better somehow. She won't even remember it tomorrow, he surmised.
She jeered at his response, but she provided no answer either, at least for a moment. âPtuiâŠâ she spat on the ground. âGetting friend-zoned⊠would hurt less thanâthis.â
He didnât know if those words were meant for him or herself. He didnât know anymore. It was as if she wanted to bring someone else down to her level of misery and despair. In the past few weeks, sheâs never treated any of the Mad Money Club that way, not that he knew, but he knew she wasnât capable of saying those kinds of things to them. Maybe he deserved to hear those prickly words, after all.
âIt's unfair, isn't it?â she turned to him once again with a demented gaze. âOne day, you found a new family with the woman of your dreams... And the nextâshe fucking leaves you the second she gets the chance to be some artsy snob, to be some slutty casanova!â
He wouldâve told her otherwise. That Sohyun thought of her more than her own dreams. That she was everything to her. But through her rage, she kicks the trash bin in front of her, almost losing her balance completely.
Junghoon placed his hands on her shoulders, before she can collide with an open bin. âSunbae!â
She ended up sitting on the concrete, her knees landing first on the concrete floor, a few inches next to a small pile of littered mess. âGet offâŠâ she nudged her shoulder off him. âI barely... slipped.â
Staring into each otherâs soul, he found that same look of despair and hopelessness in her. Heâs reminded of Sohyun. His heart clenched even further. âXinyu-ssiâŠâ
âHehâŠâ she scoffed once again, but her fingernails tightened on his shoulders, digging on the fabric of his shirt. âNow, you donât even have your sugar mommy to paââ
Even in her tipsy and intoxicated state, she can feel whatâs wrong in her body. Her eyes widened at this realization, but it was too late. Bile projected from her mouth as it fired straight to whatâs in front of her. And the two just happen to be only two feet apart from each other.
âOh,â her eyes slowly close, before abruptly releasing a burp. âShit⊠NggguuuuhhhâŠâ
Giving in to inebriation, the woman lost consciousness. Blacked out. The only good thing is that she fell into Junghoonâs arms as he caught her by instinct. Despite the green vomit stain now splattered on his azure shirt, he only stared at her with concern.
âOh my God,â he heaved, maintaining his hold on Xinyu. Instead of feeling any disgust over the stain on his clothing, he looked far into the street a few meters ahead of them, flowing with worry and sympathy. âSohyun-noona, what do I even do with her?â
Not even the spirits on his shoulders could answer him. He had to follow his intuition.
= = =
âWhat if⊠Iâwe end up, like, going somewhere else?â Sohyun suggested, nuzzling her forehead on Xinyu while the latter lied on her lap. âOutside Korea, I mean. You know, itâs not too bad if we consider our options after graduation, you know?â
She tilted her head, her lips beaming upwards with wonder. âYou mean, like me trying out Broadway or West End? You producing remixes for artists? Even original songs?â
âOh, wow! Thatâs not too bad of a proposal⊠New York or London? Thatâs ambition!â
âYou said we should consider our options,â she whined. âI was just following suit!â
âI didnât say they were bad!â she chuckled, caressing Xinyuâs soft cheeks as she sulked. âI think you should do whatever you want.â
Within moments, the lying womanâs smile returned. âHow about you, babe? You seem more and more keen on us graduating. Iâm sure you already got a lot of plans kept in your journal, donât ya?â
âHmmm... Theyâre more like self-brainstorming than plans⊠I actually made up a list that Iâve been considering for a while, if we ever get to have a trip across the worldâŠâ
âJinjja..?â Her eyes widened. Her heart wanted to believe it. âYou and me on a trip?â
âI wouldnât imagine it any other way. Youâd be surprised how much of the list is yours.â
She giggled. âYou just know me too well, you know that, hmm? My alpha muse.â
âAniya⊠I feel like you know me a lot better, babe... More than anyone.â
âWell, I love you, Sohyun-ie⊠Whatever dreams you might wanna chase, I wanna be there to support you, hmm? But, umm, itâd be really nice for me to be closer to youâŠâ
âI⊠I love you, too, Xinyu-ie⊠So much, my goddess⊠I donât deserve you, do I?â
Pulled in by the sound of their heartbeats and enticing scents, the couple leaned closer into each other until their lips crashed together. Each kiss has always felt like heaven for them.
âSays the one who made the first move on me,â she shot back as their lips parted.
âYahâŠâ Xinyu playfully smacked her shoulder. âYou were flirting around the fence! I couldn't tell if you were being sssââ
= = =
Morning has passed. Sunlight already prickled through her eyelids, prompting her to rise from her comforting slumber out of the bright irritation. She heard the door creak open. From outside, Junghoon kept his distance and greets her respectfully. From an oversized shirt to jogging pants, heâs in much more comfier attire than the ones she saw him in. She has yet to realize it, but her style of clothing isnât entirely different either. It's simply too comfortable for her to notice.
Xinyu blinked rapidly at his presence. âWhere am I?â He counted at least five times.
âYouâre in ourââ he paused. âI mean my boarding house, sunbae⊠Youâre in my room, so I slept elsewhere last night⊠But do you, umm, remember what happened last night?â
After a moment of struggling to recall the other night, Xinyuâs tiresome eyes grew at her realization. Last night flashed right before her eyes. Aish! Fuck. Shit. What the fuck did he doâthe fuck did I just do? Instinctively, she closed her eyes as her body is caught by the net of embarrassment. For a split second, she covered her face with her hands. As the silence continues, she looks back at Junghoon, opening her eyes to confront the present.
âDid I really..?â She's too hesitant, horrified even, to complete her own words.
Junghoon understood her confusion. âYeah⊠You drank a lot last night at the bar.â
She looked down, assessing what sheâs wearing. Clothes were a bit looser than what she usually wore but they're oddly comfortable enough because of it. She didn't mind it, but the fact that such clothes werenât hers only drove a few more questions to fill her mind. Thankfully, Junghoon sensed her concern when she scanned her new clothing.
âI got your clothes washed in the laundry outside. They got really soaked after you⊠umm⊠Passed out.â
âWaitâŠâ She raised an eyebrow. âDid youâ?â
âOh, no, no, no!â he panicked at her extreme insinuation. âI did not change your clothes. My halmeoni did. Plus, the laundry's only around the next block⊠I can take it out in an hour if you want, but that's also her clothes youâre wearing. Are they too uncomfortable for you? Causeâ
âNo, no, please⊠They fit just fine.â Her voice toned down hearing his grandmother's involvement. âIâŠahâThank you, Junghoon-ssi.â
âNo problem, sunbae. You can thank her downstairs. All your stuff is there on the table.â He points to the corner of the room. She located her purse. âSo umm, just let me know if something else is missing. Or if you need anything.â He bowed to her. She did the same.
After screaming right into a pillow and seven more minutes of contemplating on her life decisions, Xinyu headed down the stairs and into the living room. On the left side of the room: a flat screen TV right next to a small bookshelf, and a couch in front of it. On her right she saw an elderly woman walking from the kitchen counter, bringing three pairs of stainless steel chopsticks, spoons, and small bowls with her and placing them on the dining table. Junghoon was standing next to the stove, holding a ladle and pouring it into a clay pot while most of the steam rose up to his face. Xinyu walked up to them quietly, but her eyes crossed paths with the woman.
âYou must be Junghoonâs guest,â the old lady greeted her with her sweet and raspy voice. âJoin us for lunch. You might wanna clear your head with some hangover soup. We also have other meals that you might like.â
Junghoon placed plates of various meals. Rice. Bossam. Japchae. Haejangguk. Kimchi.
Xinyu bowed, her voice softening compared to last night. âThank you, halmeoni. Iâm not much of a picky eater.â She sat down on the chair. âI, umm, actually like all of these.â
While smiling at her, Xinyu sat at the chair right in front of Junghoon, facing where he was sitting. His grandmother was seated in a chair beside, sensing the unease between the two.
âYou're very welcomeââ she halted. âMay I know your name? If that is okay with you.â
âSure, halmeoni! Itâs Xinyu... But you can say it like âShinwi.ââ
âAh, Shinwi, Your name sounds wonderful, dear. Itâs unique. It stands out.â
âThank you, maâam,â she lowered her head for a bow. âAnd thank you for the food as well. The haejangguk is really delicious. Especially with this cup of warm tea, it really gets the headache out of the way.â
âIâm glad to hear that, although it's my grandson here that cooked the stew. I haven't cooked anything heavy in a while now, but I did teach him how to cook it.â
Xinyu took a look at him, but he kept eating his meal. Yet the millisecond he looked up to steal a glance at her, she slightly lowered her head on her bowl and chowed down a spoonful of rice, while pondering to herself at this moment. This feeling of being treated as a guest? Itâs new to her, strangely enough. Do I even deserve this? After the shit Iâve said to him? God, Iâm such an asshole. The savory treat that she's indulging in this hospitable household, wrestling with her guilt by her treatment of him outside.
âIs it too salty, dear?â asked the older woman. Only a third or her bowl was emptied. In front of Xinyu, Junghoon stopped his munching for a second, yet he continued almost right after. He looked down to focus on his japchae, but she caught his deadpan eyes.
Despite hearing her concern, Xinyu looked up to her with eyes of wariness. âOh⊠No, no, no, it's not salty at all, halmeoni. Your grandson really knows how to balance the seasonings. I'm just surprised⊠I, uh, never got to eat something like this at home.â
âWell⊠That's oddly nice to hear, since we rarely cooked for anyone else⊠Make sure you eat up a lot, arasseo?â
âNeâŠâ Such simple words encouraged Xinyu to take two pieces of bossam with her chopsticks and wrap them in a cabbage, much to Junghoonâs surprise. Within three seconds, she snuck the meal in her mouthâchewing as soon as it's inside her cheek. âJeongâŠmal kamsaâŠhamnidaâŠâ she mumbled, making the elder woman snicker.
Almost an hour has passed since they finished. Thanks to his grandmother's advice, the two headed outside for a walk around the local neighborhood of Keuri-gu, Seoul. Xinyu had her leather shoes on, realizing how polished they looked.
âThe laundromatâs just around here,â Junghoon instructed her. âBut Iâll have to drop by the pharmacy for a bit. Do you mind if I head there first..? Iâm just gonna buy medicine for my grandma.â
She slowly recalled his situation. âNo, I don't mind waiting at all. Iâll go with you.â
âOh, okay.â They walked together. âIf you need anything, I can buy it for you, sunbae.â
Throughout their thirteen minutes of waiting inside the drugstore, Xinyu couldn't help but be more curious about her hoobae. There was still guilt in her for sure, knowing how she thought of him, but now that heâs around, she didn't want to misunderstand him any longer. She didnât listen to Sohyun much, or at least was fully convinced when she told her about Junghoon, but now that sheâs all on her own, she gotta ask him herself.
âBased on your receipts from last time, hereâs your medicines,â the pharmacist shows the tray to Junghoon. âMake sure your grandmother drinks them on time, arasseo?â
âYes, Doctor. Daedanhi kamsahamnida,â he bows with gratitude.
âYouâre very welcome.â She took a look at Xinyu. âYour girlfriendâs really pretty.â
Xinyu snickered, before whispering to herself. âWhat a cliche thing to say.â
âWhatâs that?â The pharmacist couldnât catch the young womanâs remark.
âOh, sheâs just saying that sheâs not my girlfriend,â Junghoon's intercepts. âWeâre just friends from college. Sheâs my sunbae.â
âItâs nothing, Doctor,â Xinyu stepped up. âI just wanna thank you for the compliment.â
The pharmacist chuckles. âThereâs nothing to thank me for, dear. Youâre like an idol!â
âThatâs very flattering, maâam. But Iâm just a student for now. Exploring all my options, you know?â
âPerhaps you should consider the best ones, sweetheart. Not everyone gets to be born beautiful like you⊠Anyways, thanks for the visit, you two. Take care!â
They exited the store, basking underneath the sunlight once more. Xinyu still looked at him without any words. Heâs a bit more suspicious about her behavior. Itâs not like her. I know that she remembered what happened last night, but sheâs never been this awfully quiet or at least, less talkative to everyone, even to me.
âWhat is it, sunbae?â His question pulled her back out to reality.
âHuh?â She turned to him. âOh, yeah⊠I wanna ask if that isâummmâthe reason why you worked with us? Why you joined the Mad Money Club in the first place? For your halmeoniâs medications?â
With pursed lips, he slightly nods. âI guess that's one reason ever since I worked.â
âAnd that date you had with Nien last semesterâŠâ she continued. âYou stood her up because of your grandmotherâs emergency, right? I remember that day clearly.â
âYouâre right, sunbae,â he looked down in guilt. âBut to answer you, the longer I stayed with guys, I canât help but love and accept the club for what it is. Beyond that side gig part. The hangout, the members, and what you do and work on⊠Thatâs why I didnât continue with the payment. Like my closest friends, you guys are worth staying for.â
She looked at his smile. His look of encouragement, in spite of their farewell. Itâs like he had a second chance at life when he thought of his first meeting with them one year ago. Her realization made only her feel lightened up. Made her think of the rest of her loved ones. The ones Xinyu had almost taken for granted right after her girlfriend left her on short notice. There was nothing she could do. She could still be drinking and blaming Junghoon or anyone else for letting Sohyun go, but it wonât make her feel any better.
âYou know⊠You have a point. Sohyun-ah leaving⊠It shouldn't stop me from staying in the club. There's other people here worth staying for⊠And I want to be with them, too.â
âThat'sâŠâ He didn't expect her to take his words that way. Heck, he still sensed that she's hurting. âKind of nice to hear from you, sunbae⊠Iâm glad you feel that way.â
She faced him with a more straightened back and courageous posture. âHow about you, Junghoon? Are you leaving the club for next semester or will you be staying with us?â
âIâmâŠâ He already knew his answer, but some things would be far easier said than than. âIâm staying with you guys. Because as long as there's a Mad Money Club, Iâm with you.â
Hearing his optimistic words brought a smile on her face. She doesnât know exactly why, but for once, she realized that she doesnât have to keep wallowing in self-pity and bottles of soju. It was one painful breakup that she went through and is still going through, but she felt that it shouldnât hold her back. Xinyu wanted to keep living the way she yearns. She has to liberate herself and enjoy the moment with the ones who are here with her. Her heartbreakâs still there, but so were the people willing to help and give her the attention and remedies sheâd need to heal, no matter how long it would take.
After a brief revisit to Junghoonâs home, followed by a quiet, ten-minute bus ride from the Keuri-gu bus stop, the two arrive outside the first SSU campus gate. Both were now in new attires, with the woman wearing her clothes from yesterday, her jeans and white shirt, before sheâd spilled her own bile on it. Junghoon retained his joggers, although he was now wearing a darker shirt.
As they reached the sidewalk, the woman spotted a man in a black suit, standing outside a stealth wealth car. An undeniable presence which slowly made her hair stand up. Not because of the possibility that he is another stranger, but because she might know his exact identity, even from a distance.
âMs. Zhou!â They heard the manâs voice call out. âWhere the hell have you been?â
Her suspicions had proven to be correct. âMr. Yi⊠What are you doing here?â
Junghoon stood in silence right beside her, simply intimidated by the sight of this man while they walked up to him. Despite being inquisitive of his identity, he only looked at Xinyu, like heâs looking up to a royal or a goddess that he happened to be involved with now. This isnât my business, but I canât leave her alone until Iâm sure. They seem to be close, yet she acts polite towards him. Is that man her father? Brother? Uncle? Do all rich people just have hitmen-for-hire? Shit, I should've just called the girls sooner!
âYour parents wouldâve looked for you all over the city if I didnât find you sooner.â
Such words alerted her. A paralyzing trigger. âTheyâre here? Since when?â
âTheyâre still at the airport back in Beijing, but they told me that you haven't been answering their calls since last night⊠You werenât answering mine either.â
So he must be a bodyguard or someone close to their family, he added.
âI know. But my phone died last night,â she brings up. âI only got it charged an hour ago.â She bows to him, adding up to Junghoonâs assumption. âJoesonghamnida.â
Yi shook his head. âIt's fine⊠Now, answer my question. Unless you want your parents to ask you the same question tonight, I donât know if I can help you get out of this one.â
âIâahâŠâ Xinyu almost fumbled. âI stayed at a friend's place last night after a gathering.â
The head bodyguard looked at Junghoon with distrust. âIs he the friend you went with?â
âUh, no!â she waved her hands, a bit agitated at his look. âHe is a friend of mine as well, but I slept at another friendâs place. I just happened to stumble across him on campus.â
âNe, sheâs right, ahjussi,â he bowed out of instinct, intimidated by the manâs keen stare. âAnnyeonghaseyo.â
Yi slowly nodded at Junghoon with respect, but the womanâs words werenât enough to convince him. âHmm⊠Do you two have classes today?â He took another look at Xinyu, slowly flaring his breathing through his nose, as the guard scanned the wrinkled clothes of the young woman. âYou should get your clothes changed, by the way.â
âWe donât?â she emboldened her cadence. âBecause itâs a Saturday? And I just got these washed. Plus, Itâs not like Iâm going anywhere else anyway⊠so I donât see the big deal.â
He scoffed. âIf itâs not a big deal, then I donât see why we canât go home now. You got some explaining to do once they get here.â
She turned to Junghoon. âI gotta goâŠâ she held his hand. âThank you, Junghoon-ah. And please thank your grandmother for meâŠâ she got inside the passengerâs door, as opened for her by Mr. Yi. âSee you on Monday!â
âI will, Xinyu-sunbaenim,â he waved at him, his relief returning. âAnnyeonghi gaseyo!â
After Xinyu and Yi drove away. Standing in front of the pavement, Junghoon looked at the vehicle and sheepishly waved at it as his sunbae and her ride slowly left his sight.
Junghoon sighed with relief. âI shouldnât be going this far⊠But at least sheâs alright.â
From a distance, four figures exited the main campus gate and ran straight to Junghoon. Hearing his name like a megaphone, he looked back to see Seoyeon, Nien, Dahyun, and Yubin approaching in a hurry. They mustâve read my texts about Xinyu-sunbae since last night. I hope they donât get mad at me for letting her sleep at our place.
âSunbaes. Yubin-ah⊠What are you guys doing here this early?â
âJunghoon-ah!â Seoyeon latched her hand on his shoulder while catching her breath for a moment. âWhere is Xinyu-unnie?â
âIs she okay?â added Nien, though she looked at him just as worried, her fingers holding on his palm. âWhere is she now?â
âShe just left in that car with her bodyguard or someone. He was in a black suit.â
âWhich one?â asked Yubin, which made him raise an eyebrow.
âThe one named Mr. Yi,â he recalled vividly. âIf Iâm not mistaken. Tall and brooding.â
Junghoon was a bit perplexed by the bombardment of questions fired by their worries, but sighs followed as nothing but relief was felt by the three women after hearing that name from him and how he described the man.
âDahaengidaâŠâ Yubin exhaled, reassured by his short description. âItâs just Mr. Yi.â
Her relief and the othersâ positive yet even mundane reaction made him tilt his head. âDo you all know who he is?â
âYeah, umm⊠Mr. Yi is actually the head bodyguard of the Zhous,â Seoyeon briefed him.
âOh⊠So she does have many bodyguards after all,â he slowly nodded at this realization. Paranoia wouldâve pushed him to ask more questions, but he kept himself calm around them. If they trust him, if she trusts him, thereâs no good reason I shouldnât.
âYeah, she does⊠But don't be intimidated by them too much, arasseo?â she assured him with a snicker, noticing his unease at the thought of meeting more men in suits. âTheyâre not assassins, unless you give âem a reason to be.â
âDonât mind Seoyeon-ah⊠How about you, Junghoon-ssi? Did you guys stumble on anything or anyone suspicious last night?â Dahyun took her turn to ask him.
âLuckily, we didnât, noona. The bar she was drinking in happened to be walking distance from my boarding house. Place was almost empty and no one bothered her⊠Bartender even asked us to leave at midnight. Scared when she got too drunk.â
âThank God she was with you.â Seoyeon placed her hand on his shoulder once again, her worry still not leaving her mind. âJunghoon-ah⊠Thank you so much for taking care of herâŠâ Her grip on him slowly prolonged into a squeeze, but he never seemed to feel a sting. âBut weâll never let any of you be on your own ever again. Thatâs our promise!â
âItâs no problem, noona,â Junghoon nodded, feeling the ease of his calming heartbeat, just hearing her reassurance, and the undeniable grip sheâs had on him. âIâm just glad sheâs okay now.â
âNow that thatâs been dealt withâŠâ Dahyun scratched her head with a frown. âGosh, we really gotta talk to her next week. Things must have been the hardest for her, ever since Sohyun-unnie left.â
âRight, unnie,â Yubin nodded, also with a somber face. âWe gotta be there for her the moment we meet on campus. We canât leave each other now⊠Not in a time like this.â
Junghoon rubbed his left wrist. âI think I may be able to help you guys on that one.â
They turned at him with anticipation. âYou have any ideas in mind?â Seoyeon wondered.
= = =
Monday finally arrived. Outside the building, Junghoon crossed paths with Xinyu. But, more accurately, he waited for her arrival for twenty minutes. Itâs already approaching lunch break, though this time it took her a little later for her to arrive here than usual.
âYouâre a bit later than usual, sunbae,â he greeted her with a slight bow, as did she.
âWhat do you mean?â she tilted her head at him. âItâs not that rare that I arrive a bit late. Plus, I had some stuff to sort out with my parents, if you still remember that last week.â
Sheâs right. His own remark made him guarded. âYeah, youâre right. Mianhamnida.â
Xinyu looked straight into his eyes, examining his behavior. Somethingâs off with him. Is it because of last week? I hope things still aren't weird between us since I threw up on him when I dropped drunk. Or when said those things to him. Damn, I sucked ass.
âAnd, umm, speaking of last weekâŠâ Her lips twitched. âI think I owe you an apologyâŠâ
âOh, sunbaeâŠâ Junghoon almost took his right foot backwards, unaware she would take this conversation, but his left stayed, maintaining his attention to her. âYou donât havââ
âI certainly do, and I want toâŠâ Her eyes darted at him. âMianhaeyo, Junghoon-ssi.â
A suppressed part of him, however, yearned to hear those words. Those eyes of hers, mirroring the times sheâs taken him seriously during their meets. âYou were drunk.â
âThat didnât make it right⊠I treated you like a punching bag just because I was tipsyââ
âYou were wastedââ he tried to lighten the mood, although he felt it was a gamble.
She chuckled, in disbelief he would respond in that lighthearted manner. âThatâs besides the point, but yeah⊠I am really sorry for all those hurtful things. Especially with what I said about you and Nien, I think youâre a good guy. Everything just⊠Came over me.â
âGwenchanayo, sunbae⊠Believe it or not, Nien and I already talked things over a while back, so thereâs no bad blood between us. But I do appreciate the apology⊠Jeongmal.â
He took another breath and added more to his words. âAnd if it makes it feel any better, you can also stop calling me too formally, then weâre all good⊠If thatâs okay with you.â
Slowly, her lips curled upward. âOf course. Thatâs the least I can do, Junghoon-ahâŠâ
Silence prolonged through their smiles, but for the woman, somethingâs still strange.
âBy the way, why did you wait for me? Did you and the girls already meet in the room?â
He hated lying. âI wasnât⊠Waiting. And no, we haven't had a meeting yet. You know we canât do that if weâre not complete.â Yet, he was simply making things up on the spot.
She crossed her arms. âSo you werenât just standing on this spot before I arrived?â
His eyes kept moving from left to right. Diagonally, up and down. âSince you are not there yet, I thought I could just, you know, get some air. It was getting hotter there.â
âBut we have AC inside the room,â Xinyu pointed out. âDon't tell me itâs broken now?â
âWhy not just open the window?â she shot back. âOur roomâs on the second floor.â
âBecause everyone else was into the AC,â he whined. âDidnât wanna bother them while they wait for us.â
âYou know they wonât mind if anyone feels cold.â She squinted her eyes, while Junghoon tried his best to level his gaze with hers without a sign of panic. However, she can notice him breathing through his nose, louder than usual. âWhatâs going on with you today?â
Junghoon was already fumbling. He hesitated more, struggling to come up with another excuse in front of her. That is until he hears a vibration in his pocket. He didnât know if it entailed good or bad news, making him pull out his phone and check the message.
âCrap,â he whispered to himself, but her ears caught him.
âWho was it?â she bluntly questioned him, focusing on his instant face of agitation.
Why did I say it out loud?
âOh, that was no one. Just some spam emails. I was just checking the time sinceââ
Thereâs a larger digital clock behind them and it has been on since the morning they got here. Heâs caught. Thereâs no point in stalling her. Thereâs gotta be some other way to give them a little more time.
She became a bit worried by his movements. âWhat is it, Junghoon? Tell me.â
Junghoon's anxious look remained, even though he had no other words left to say. âWellâŠâ
She rushed into the building and walked swiftly up the stairs, despite his pleas. Opening the door of Room 238, she expected the worst to happen, based on Junghoonâs concern.
âSurprise!â shouted everyone inside the room, leaving Xinyu stunned, astonished at her sisters while Junghoon stood beside her with a warm smile and slow breaths of relief.
Her boiling worries simmering down with relief at the sight of her members the moment she looks at their glowing faces and radiating smiles. She felt her eyes starting to water.
âWâWhatâs this?â She slowly stepped inside, looking around the now decorated room in awe. Junghoon silently closed it before it stirred attention from other students or worse, professors. Inside, the walls are with photos of their time together in the past two years. Noticing the teddy bears and the religious statues, stacked with fake Korean won bills, which they made as a goof for her project made her laugh and giggle, as if her sadness drifted in her moments of reminiscence. The food on the table reminded them of their first time dining outside campus.
âWe wanted to surprise you with a little something, unnie,â Seoyeon chuckled, holding Xinyu as she walked closer to them in wonder.
âI know Sohyun-unnie may no longer be a part of our club, but she wouldn't want us to keep feeling like this. Even if you guys arenât⊠Together anymore,â Nien comforted her.
âThat being said,â Yubin continued, looking at the dozens of pictures on the wall as well. âWe want to remind you that weâre not going anywhere, unnie.â
âI know, Iââ Xinyu halted, realizing itâs never just about herself. âWe shouldn't be afraid to see things differently, because thatâs not necessarily a bad thing⊠Itâs Sohyunâs choice to leave and thereâs nothing much we can do. We can only wish her the bestâŠâ she sighs. âBut at least⊠At least, weâre still here. Thank you girls.â
âWeâre always here for you, Xinyu-unnieâŠâ Dahyun reassured her, as the rest nodded.
âIâm soâssorry I ppushed youâaway, girls,â mumbled Xinyu, each of her hands holding onto Nien and Seoyeon. âI donât know where Iâd be without youâall⊠Iâsnnâlove you.â
Tears began to pour from her eyes, closing them as she felt the sweet embrace of her sisters, huddled together into a group hug. Seoyeon dragged Junghoon to join their moment, slumping him between her and Nien. They closed their eyes, treasuring the warm embrace for a few seconds, before the tantalizing scent of food distracted them.
âAs you are now looking at our containers and deliveries on the table,â Yubin informed everyone. âYou girls better not worry about getting lunch, arasseo?â
As Xinyu noticed, their table was not scattered with their usual notes, books, and other devices. Instead, stainless metal containers of various foods are placed by the members. The Mad Money Club rarely got to eat together during class hours since they didnât want to spend their funds and allowances together at the same time, but todayâs an exception.
âI canât believe you managed to buy these,â she wondered, still in awe at the makeshift buffet on their table. âDid you have them delivered?â
âWe didn't order everything outside. Just the appetizers we usually order,â Seoyeon explained like she was a waiter impressing a bunch of customers. âLucky for us, Yubin and Junghoon volunteered to cook these main dishes, just to try out something new. Our maknae chefs.â
Xinyu looked at Yubin and Junghoonâgiving them a smile of genuine appreciation and gratitude, even though heâs more occupied with the rest of the girls in handing out their paper plates, disposable spoons, and chopsticks, as if they were having an actual party. She then looked at the four women, as her heart had slowly melted by their surprise.
About five minutes later, they heard a few knocks on the door. Xinyu almost panicked, but her suspicions overcame her fears when Junghoon had quickly opened it with little hesitation. She exchanged a few looks with Seoyeon and the rest. Seeing Yubin holding her grin, Seoyeon shaking her head with arms crossed, Dahyun moving her fingers like theyâre strings, and Nien scratching her head with a smileâher suspicions shifted into both annoyance and anticipation.
From outside the room, entered Hwihyeon, Yuki, Jihye, and Daeho, cheering âSurprise!â Their hands held an assortment of soda and fruit juices. Five bottles and a litter each.
âGirls?!â Xinyuâs eyes widened, her smile immediately returning. âHow did youâ?â
âA little birdy told us about a secret little party,â Jihye teased, making Dahyun giggle.
âWe canât miss out on the fun, hehe,â Hwihyeon added, her jumpy movement mirroring Seoyeonâs cheerful behavior all of the sudden. âIf you donât mind us being here, that is,â Yuki chimed in beside Daeho, who simply waved at her with a warm, supportive smile.
At this point, Xinyu couldnât care less about who told them. Now that theyâre here, her heart was yearning for them as much as she did her own club. âCome in!â she hollered, pulling them inside by their hands just before Junghoon closed the door shut. The Mad Money and Thespians Society huddled with cheers and enthusiasm. âThese dishes look amazing,â she added. âbut I donât even know if we can finish all of these by ourselves.â
As much as it ached for her to keep on thinking about the one that got away, she realized thereâs still a lot more things worth staying for here, while sheâs in college. Maybe sheâll meet someone new, but that matters the least to her right now, maybe for a long time.Â
Whoeverâs here, thatâs more than enough.

From the other side of the globe, it's still an hour before sunrise. In her autumn wear, Sohyun rested her crossed arms on the parapet with her earphones on, as the morning breeze blew off the orange and yellow leaves down the ground. From her distance, her peripherals caught the bridge, with its bundles of love locks. Shifting her gaze into the depths of the Seine river, she took a deep breath into the Western air. She checked the time on her watch, prompting her to take a stroll back to her dorm.
The door quickly unlocked with her key, which Sohyun slowly turned with caution. Without muttering a word, she took her shoes off and placed them on the doormat.
âOlivia? C'est toi ?â a new yet familiar voice mumbled to her. Her roommateâstill pulled into her slumberâwas awoken by the creak of the closing door. Crap⊠she thought, You shouldâve closed it slower. Still, she kept her voice lower in front of her.
âOui, c'est moi, Sylvie,â she hummed, taking off her jacket and placing it on the chair in front of her desk. âQui d'autre ?â
âAs-tu au moins dormi un peu?â she asked, right before letting out a yawn.
âOui, mais pas autant que tu as dormi,â Sohyun couldnât help but chuckle at her state.
The woman snortled as she sat down on her bed, rubbing off the rheum of both her eyes. âI see your French is getting better.â She changed her tongue to English with ease while retaining her native accent. Nevertheless, Sohyun has little more experience with this language. Sheâs got someone to thank that for.
Sohyun sat down on the chair. âMerci beaucoup. I, uh, I had a little time to study.â
âAt this hour?â Sylvie rested her right cheek on her knuckles, intrigued by her feat, even though she just caught the bags under her eyes. She had an urge to say and ask about it, but she thought they're not close enough to reach that level of conversation. Not yet.
Sohyun rummaged through her wardrobe. âJust wanted to wrinkle my brain a bit.â
âMon DieuâŠâ the French woman shook her head. âGirl, we gotta get you a new hobby!â
Sohyun pulled out a fresh set of clothes and a towel. âIâm flattered, but who needs them now when we have class in an hour?â
Sylvie sighed, making her pick up her phone on her nightstand. âYou just had to remind me that, donât you?â
âYou said you wanted me to have your back,â she countered, raising her hands in the air.
Sohyun might not be there to celebrate with them, nor could the members contact her as of this time being, but they commenced their feast in Korea, as, even in their unexpected farewell, all members wished the best to one of their own in her future endeavors. Hope clung on, maybe sheâll call them soon.
As much as it pains her, she has a new life now.
For now, only a thought ought to keep them going through this chapter. Wherever they were, wherever they would end up. Who knows what the future holds?
= = =
so that's it for this chapter. aside from apologizing again, I feel obliged to clarify that I'm also a soxinz shipper lol, but this is an au. it's all fiction. so yeah. plus, other writers have written their ship way better. some of them are available on this site too. also, apologies if I somehow offended any French readers lol, I only used a translator for that, so that's another clarification out of the way.
on another note, I'm still on a break from smut one-shots but the latest waterbomb has been really pushing me to write something, even if it's just a quickie smut or fluff, so maybe, maybe, not, I'll post something new, eventually. for now, I hope you liked this one, or not. I still appreciate the read. hope you have a nice day and 'til next time!

Yooyeonâs body makes a loud thud as sheâs thrown again onto the now-brittle road, her bones steadily crumbling just like the asphalt beneath her. The air she worked so hard to gather in her chest is forced out once more as her back meets the cold, hard surface, and it takes with it a generous amount of her blood. She clutches her sideâstruggling to keep her lungs in her ribcage, holding the hole in the side of her stomach closed, trying in vain to stop her liver from leaking any more bile.
Lying with her temple to the floor, her eyes dart back and forth all over the scene, trying to make sense of the immediate danger she could at least keep occupied just two seconds ago. The sounds are still somewhat clear in her head past the dull ringingâher ears still work, at leastâand she can still feel the heavy, rhythmic thuds through the ground coming from far away. Her nose stopped working the first time she got clocked in the head, and since then itâs all smelled like iron and gold.
Her vision blurs, darkness creeping in from the edges of her sight. The heat on her arms dissipates the fastest they've ever had, and she slowly starts to feel weightless, as if sinking into the icy depths of the ocean. Her eyelids get heavier with each labored breath she takes, and as the fuzz in front of her eyes get farther away, memories slowly replace themâŠ
She recalls the first time she entered the big house, how it felt pulling her luggage behind her walking up the cobble path to the door and fearing what awaits on the other side. Seoyeon comes out and takes her bagâclearly younger but she felt she had an air of responsibility about her. Then came another, and another, and another still to welcome her in. It wasnât much, but it was her new home.
She remembers the way it felt, burning for the first time. Panic flooded her nerves as her fingers gave off the beginnings of wisps of smoke, and it took Coach Jeon thirty minutes to help her realize that none of it hurt. She remembers how the petals on her guard glowed for the first time, how the steel of her new swordâs handle sapped her hands of the warmth that stuck to her like glue, and it was the moment Yooyeon had finally learned what cold felt like.
Sheâs brought back to when they welcomed the newest teaching aide: a shy girl from Japan this time. Director Jo realized the House was growing too quickly; three people to keep a close eye on the then-sixteen foundlings was much too muchâfour for the sixteen and counting would be heaps more manageable, and Sohyun and Xinyu would love the help more than Yooyeon herself.
A recent memory flashes back: Coordinator Im, younger and tinier than Yooyeon yet much wiser, had the bleakest look on her face. A search-and-rescue after Coaches Jeon, Kim, and Park went MIA in the field investigating a series of black box distress calls from a war-torn location that only seemed to pile up. Yooyeon told Seoyeon to stay behind and look after the kids, asked Jiwoo to supply the tough love Seoyeon could never muster, and Lynn to stay at the beacon on the field to make sure it stayed operational and ready for anyone to beam back anytime. It felt odd, picking who got the privilege to be deployed. She remembers Chaeyeon putting on a tough frontââUnnie, I can heal now, I can helpââ despite the quiver in her lip as she showed her hands glowing pink.
Just then a shriek rips through the air from somewhere behind her: âYooyeon, stay down! Iâll covâAAAAAHHHHH!â The shock sharpens her eyes to near 20/20 again, only to find Sohyun clutching her skull as she crumples to the floor. The way her friend folds in half before falling face-first into the gunk and junk of the tipped trashcan ignites her second, and maybe last, wind.
âArgh, stop!â Yooyeon struggles to her feet, her left hand still holding her organs in place, as she scrambles across the floor, picking up her rapier with the last bout of determination she can afford. She locks in on the summoner in front of her, the witchâs arm raised in Sohyunâs direction as wisps of blue smoke waft from her fingertips to Sohyunâs eyes and nostrils even as the latter thrashes back and forth on the pavement and waste. A white line reveals itself, extending from the tip of Yooyeonâs sword to her opponentâs neck, and it pulls on her arm, raring to get back to clashing and relieving Sohyun of the psionic torment.
Her blade glows, first into a deep scarlet before blazing into a blinding white. Her body grows lighter and the pain subsides as she picks up speed, one steady step after the other, she feels the asphalt beneath her feet melting into tar and sticking worthlessly onto the bottoms of her shoes. Faster and faster like the beating of her heart, she breaks into a sprint, and the witch raises her staff to guard against Yooyeonâs incoming charge. It doesnât matterâitâs just wood, and wood burns easyâas the same blue wisps of smoke surround her staff and arm, growing into a corporeal shroud of armor.
Initial contact sets off a small explosionâthe summoner is pushed back, her smoke falters, and Sohyun is given a moment of reprieve. She looks back to her friend and finds two more tending to her: Chaeyeonâs mana coats her hands in a pink glow as she brings them over Sohyunâs temples, and next to her Xinyu propped up against a wall beside Sohyun loads a bolt onto Chaeyeonâs crossbow and aims long past Yooyeonâs shoulder. She notes the lack of water golems surrounding them, in their place sat puddles of Chaeyeonâs pink sludge. No more time to think, Yooyeon rushes to follow the witch through the cloud of dirt. Her rapierâs white thread directs her through the dust wisps, and it takes no time at all to find the witch recovering from the explosion.
In the nick of time Xinyuâs bolt glowing with Chaeyeonâs pink mana buries itself into the witchâs shoulder, and Yooyeon drives her blade into the other one: the solid smoke dissipates from the staff as embers lifting from Yooyeonâs guard make contact with the wood, singeing it from the inside out. More sludge materializes from Xinyuâs bolt, filling the wound with a viscous goo that overflows and starts replacing the witchâs blood.
The witch howls in pain as she collapses backward, and Yooyeon pushes with desperation to pin her opponent to the ground. The asphalt around them bubbles as Yooyeonâs blade and body take on a righteous yellow glow, and before she knows it, the summoner is sunk and buried in the tar underneath them. Steam and noxious gas rises from the bubbles, the tar ripples with each dull thud growing progressively louder, and Yooyeon tugs her blade out of the ground and backs away breathless.
Her glow dies down gradually and the pain returns. She takes measly trudges back to her friends, her side throbbing with each shock of her foot meeting the floor, and finally collapses to her knees in front of Xinyu.
âUnnie, let me see,â Chaeyeon sobs, the pink mana dripping in excess from her trembling hands. She reaches for Yooyeonâs bloody waist, but is swatted away.
Yooyeon winces and reels, âIâm fine, Chaeyeon. Sohyun got a lot of that smoke in her headââ
âDonât fight this, Yooyeon. We donât have time,â Xinyu commands anyway, restraining her arms despite the heat still rising off of them. It singes her palms too, and Xinyu fails to hide the pain, yet holds on anyway.
âWhatâs gotten into you, Xinyu?! Sohyun isââ
âGone⊠Unnie, Sohyun is gone. Please,â and Chaeyeon is finally able to grab her elderâs waist. A tender warmth spreads from her fingertips throughout Yooyeonâs body as she feels her bones fusing back together and her organs righting themselves into place. The relief from the pain brings tears to her eyes, but her focus remains:
âOkay, Iâm feeling better now, Chae, now do Sohyunââ
âThereâs nothing left, Unnie. All her neurons are firingâno more thoughts in her head, just static. Sheâs goneâŠâ
Yooyeon canât believe her ears, her stomach turns and her heart sinks. âWhatâŠ? No, Chaeyeon, you have to try!â
Xinyu strikes Yooyeonâs cheek with an open palm, âWhat the fuck do you think we were doing here this entire time?! Chaeyeon did everything she can and it didnât bring her back!â Tears are streaming down Xinyuâs eyes now too, and Chaeyeon sobs quietly as she tries for Yooyeonâs legs. Relief washes over her knees, but it only stabs at her heart deeper. The flashing pain reduces to a numbing ache, and the tremors from the ground donât seem as heavy.
âListen, Yooyeon, we need you now more than ever, okay? Get back to the beacon and regroup with everyone.â Xinyu loads one last bolt into Chaeyeonâs crossbow. âIâm keeping this, Chae, Iâm sorry.â
âWhat do you mean?! Chaeyeon, take your crossbow back, and Xinyu, help me pick up Sohyun, the four of us can go together!â
âItâs⊠some sort of anesthetic,â Xinyu mutters through her scratchy throat. âHit the base of my spine. My legs donât work anymore, Yooyeon. I canât walk, I canât kick.â
Only then does it occur to Yooyeon the peculiar support Xinyu provided: where she should have rushed to Yooyeonâs side with her leg cocked and ready to unleash a roundhouse, instead she stayed sat against a wall next to their healer. She notices the socks Seoyeon gifted her are tied to her ankles instead, and her boots are nowhere to be found.
âYeah,â Xinyu spots Yooyeonâs eyes and confesses, wiping away more tears from her own cheeks, âI got rid of them. Chae here complained I got too heavy to carry,â she admits with a dry chuckle.
The ground rumbles once more, and as it gets steadily louder they canât ignore the consistent pattern any longer: footsteps of a march. Chaeyeon grows pale and shoots her eyes desperately to Yooyeon, âUnnie, we have to go.â
âXinyu, werenât you with Tone? Where is she?â
Xinyu announces with her eyes shut tight, âThe anesthetic was on some sword, and that summoner shouldâve gotten me while I had my back turned, but Kotone stepped in front of it.â She sobs another ugly sob before continuing, âRight through her shield and her gut, Unnie. And we were surrounded, didnât stand a chance.â
âNo⊠no, no, no! Whereâs Dahyun?! Yubin?!â
Chaeyeon chimes in, the little strength in her voice quickly fading, âI was heading back to the beacon, Jiyeon told me to go ahead, and I found Yubinâs head⊠or, half of it.â
Panic rises higher in Yooyeonâs chest, âWhatâŠ? W-where?â
Xinyu shrieks, âWe donât have time! Just go! Chaeyeon never should have even stopped for me!â
âNo! Chaeyeon, where is everyone else?!â
âDead, Yooyeon, all dead,â Xinyu interrupts, âjust like Tone, like Yubin, like me if you stay any longer!â The march has grown inexplicably louder, any moment and the army of reinforcements would be upon them. Xinyu shoves Yooyeon away, âJust go. I can buy you five⊠no, ten minutes, and one less golem at least. Just⊠leave me the crossbowâChae, Iâm so sorryâjust leave me here with Sohyun,â she casts her eyes towards Sohyun, slumping over if not for Xinyu holding her up. âPlease⊠go.â
Yooyeonâs heart breaks, seeing her fellow seniors so broken like this. Are they really losing? Are the girls really gone?
A tug on her sleeve snaps her out of it, âUnnie, please, Iâm scared. I want to go homeâŠâ Chaeyeon pleads, evidently running out of tears and mana as well. Itâs a wake up callâup until the last moment, Xinyu puts the girls first, even at the cost of herself. Sohyun was the same, always thinking she was the weakest, revealing her position to the enemy to give Yooyeon the best chance of surviving. Mayu, however she might be, must be keeping Lynn safe as they work the beacon even though they, she, could just go home herself.
Yooyeon's aching heart sways with Chaeyeon's words, and she attempts to rise. Her knees wobble underneath her, but Chaeyeon catches her and swings her arm over her shoulders. She steadies herself, mindful to cool down and make it easier for Chaeyeon to hold her, and they begin to trudge away.
Yooyeon takes one last look back towards her fellow aides as Chaeyeon drags her offâshe finds Xinyu sobbing, cuddled up to Sohyun, her face buried in her neck as Sohyunâs eyes remain open but empty.
The room is darkâ not pitch black but dark enough where outlines start to blur. You slide your shoes off, exhausted after a session of working carrying the workload of four people. It isnât until you place your bag down you notice the glow of a phone screen on the couch.Â
Xinyu was there, waiting. Silently.
You see the glint in her eyes find you at the door.
âYou forgot me.â Xinyu said. Soft. Fragile. The words paradoxically carried more weight than if she screamed.
But you hadnât. The facts lined up in your mind like a defense you werenât allowed to use: you texted her updates, told her when youâd be home, warned her youâd be late. You even offered to step out of the group project for a moment to call.
Still, the words clung to you. You forgot me.
They hollowed you out, making you doubt yourself. Had you? Somehow? In a way you couldnât see?
You wanted to be angry. You almost were. But the sadness in her voice was like a hand pressing against your throat, and the way her lips curved into that smileâ gentle, forgivingâ made you feel as though the argument was already over. Youâd already lost.
â
You woke up in a daze, stirred by the incessant cooing of pigeons outside your windows. Beside you lay the love of your lifeâ your girlfriend of half a decade, and possibly, your only need in the worldâ still drifting through her dreams. Her face soft, emanating a quiet serenity.
A careful peak of your phone revealed it to be 7:23 AM, roughly an hour before Xinyu would begin to stir. You cautiously slipped out from underneath the layers of blankets, and crept toward the door connecting your bedroom to the living room.Â
The door creaks while you pull it open, holding your breath the entire time. You glance toward your bed, noting two things: one, Xinyu is thankfully still asleep; and two, she is as gorgeous as you always have remembered her. Even now in this unkempt state, there is no flaw you could findâ nor dare seekâ about her being. Her disheveled hair, as messy it may be, outlined her features. Even from across the room, you could see a glistening trail of saliva down her cheek. You used to find that endearing. Now, it just feels⊠too much. Like something youâre supposed to adore.
You slipped past the door, still eyeing your girlfriend as she grasped at your spot for something to fill her slender hands. The couch greets you just as it did so many times, your reprieve from Xinyu. Pictures and videos streamed through your screenâ your daily doomscroll session. Amidst the flashing lights and snappy contentâ noting how oddly frequent spinning kitchen utensils showed upâ you couldn't help but think about your girlfriend. Specifically how lucky you were to have her. Whether it be your personality, the way you treasured her, or the four previous rejections, you had her. Even if itâs only because she feels bad.
In your mind, those four confessions didnât count as true admissions of romantic feelings. You were wasted, nothing else needs to be saidâbut she never let you live it down.
She would playfully mock you, âXinweâŠ.. I-â punctuating every word with exaggerated slurs. âI- I- I weaaaaaaally want to go out with you⊠Pweeeeeeaseeeeeeee-âÂ
You cringed just thinking about it. A true confession or not, your feelings were true, just not conveyed the way you would have liked it to.
Your endless stream of dopamine was interrupted by a text from Kotone. Â
Tone~ đ¶

1pm if you wanna drop by
weâll just be studying and reviewing for the exam
comin up
You sit up and hesitate before thinking. You could go but you donât know how Xinyu would feel about it. You know Kotone well but the other two are acquaintances by virtue of the aforementioned class. Xinyu and Kotone are also friends, so surely she wouldnât mind it, right?Â
You
hmm, maybe. Iâll lyk around 12 if Iâm comin or not
Another peek at the corner of your phone, 8:02 AM, only a matter of time before she would wake. You could try something that had worked before: they need your help, mainly Nakyoung that is, or you could mention the exam coming up just this week.Â
For better or for worse, this has become a sort of unspoken rule in your relationship. Xinyu loved spending time with youâ maybe a little too muchâ but the way she lit up made it worth it. Or at least thatâs what you told yourself.
If she didnât get her way, you paid for it with the silent treatment. Guilt filled your lungs like thick smoke at these times. Her silence was suffocating. Silenceâ more often than notâ was all she needed. But it came at your expense.
Your way? A rare occurrence. An urban legend. You missed nights out with your friends. Skipped study sessions when you desperately need that time. Abandoned hobbies that kept you sane.Â
Every skipped plan, every silence swallowedâ it was all for her.
You told yourself that the sacrifices were worth it. You loved her. She loved you. Eventually everything would work out and this would only be a minor bumpâ something youâd both look on fondly, laughing at how trivial it was. Thatâs what was supposed to happen, what you clung to, even as a malignant, insidious thought burrowed into your mind.
The time you spent together, you cherished it. She would light up your world like nobody else could. It made your sacrifices small in comparison to how she made you feel. Itâd make you forget what you gave up.Â
But a gnawing, incessant thought would always resurface: What about me?Â
That thought stung. It stung because it was the truth. And it stung more than any of Xinyuâs silences could.
You buried that thought. Buried it beneath six feet of dirt and tamped it down with the weight of love and false assurances. But it came back. Over and over and over. No matter what and how many times you tried. It would always resurface, and youâd hopelessly bury it all the same every time.
You did it because you loved her. It was the right thing to doâ Right?
Before you can put much more thought into what youâd tell her, you heard Xinyu stirring around in bed. It wasnât much her movement, but rather the guttural groan that emanated from your bedroom which alerted you.Â
Dismayed, but left without choice, you reluctantly returned to your room.Â
The view gate kept by your door was immaculateâ something that you wouldnât trade the world for. Xinyu lay starfished half-covered in blankets, hair a gorgeous mess, half-lidded eyes directed toward youâ all made even more perfect by a saccharine smile that turned your brain into mush.
In an instant youâre at her side, softly brushing strands of hair off her face. Up close, sheâs breathtaking. She doesnât have to try.Â
âGood morning, baobei,â you whispered, softly planting a kiss on her forehead. She hums warmly in response, her lips thinning as she smiles wider than moments ago. You gently caress her now rosy cheek with your thumb. Xinyu meets your gaze with those stunning, brown-oceans of eyes nuzzling into your touch.
This womanâ Sheâs overpowered.Â
âMorning~â Xinyu replied in a syrupy voice. A toothy smile spreads across your face; She has youâ completely.Â
One look. One sound. Itâs all it takes.
Xinyuâs done nothing but lie there, stillâ youâre under her influence.
It feels like everything you are belongs to her.
Before your mind can register it, your lips are on hers. Her slender figure wraps around you; one hand threading through your hair, the other pulling you in by your waist. Xinyu deepens the kissâ her lips desperately trying to memorize yours. Your hand trails down her waistâher breath hitching slightlyâ your body lightly pressing against her to share her warmth. You break the kiss, hovering your lips just above hers. Her breath is shakyâ almost as if sheâs trying to keep herself calm.
âYou were gone,â she stammers, voice still raspy. âI reached out and you werenât there.â
âI was just outside,â you say, lightly rubbing her waist.Â
She doesnât reply right away. You feel her grasp on your waist tighten.
âI hate waking up alone,â Xinyu whispers, punctuating it with an exasperated sigh.
A pang of guilt strikes you. You knew that.
You swallow hard. Guilt thick in your throat. âIâm here now.â Though, in the back of your mind you were somewhere else.
Xinyu kisses you, hard, hungry for more of you. Like sheâs trying to leave an imprint of herself on you thatâll never fade.Â
Blankets are forced away. She flips you over, straddling your waistâ never breaking the kiss. Her hands find their way underneath your shirt, fingers tracing your clavicle. She smiles into the kiss, your brain numbing by the millisecond.
Everything becomes a blur.
The only thing that exists is Xinyu. Her touch, her warmth, her breath catching as your hands explore her skin. Suddenly the room is warmer, blankets and pillows laid astray, limbs becoming more and more tangled.
Xinyu separates her lips from yours. She whispers in your ear, âStay with me today. Just us.â Â
You pauseâthe words hit you like a freight train. You stare absently into the pillow. Your lips part, intending to say something. But then, your lips are on her neckâleaving your markâdrawing her closer, your body betraying your mind.
You remember Kotoneâs text, The study sessionâ and you bury it all.Â
Because she asked. But is that enough?
Xinyu leans into you, intoxicated by your attentionâ thriving because of it. She straightens herself, tugging at the hem of your shirt. You oblige, and your torso is exposed in an instant. Xinyu guides your hands toward the hem of her shirt, beckoning you to do the same.
Moment by moment, the sun risesâ illuminating the room in golden stripes through the blinds.
And thenâ
âââ
Itâs 10 AMâ at least, you thinkâ when you finally come to. Xinyuâs soft breath warms your bare chest, steady, unhurried. Your fingers are laced with hers, your thumb tracing the back of her hand in a quiet reassurance.
Moments like thisâ silence that doesnât threatenâ you savor them. You wish it could last: an undemanding quiet. Your gaze follows the seam where ceiling meets wall, your mind already drifting.
But even with her warmth seeping in, a gnawing ache tightens in your chest. Subtle at firstâ you distract yourself with the memory of spinning kitchen utensils from earlierâ but it swells. The thought youâve tried to bury surfaces: what youâre giving up, and who youâre becoming.
Your thumb keeps tracing her handâ a futile anchor to where you are, who youâre with. That this should be enough.
You picture yourself there, tucked in a corner booth with your laptop, earphones half-in. The company is nice, but itâs the simplicity you craveâ the chance to exist without carrying so much weight.
Out there, you could just be a student. Your own person. Someone who never had to shrink to fit anotherâs moldâ who could take up space without always measuring it against Xinyuâs needs.
Your vision blurs. The room drifts away, the ceiling gathering into a heavy bank of nimbus clouds, ready to break.
Xinyu stirs against you again, her hand tightening around yours as if she can somehow sense you drifting away. Her hand reels you back. Back to the bed and back to this moment. Back to this world youâve built around her.
Maybe thatâs the problem. Youâve made Xinyu your world. And you donât know where she ends and where you begin anymore.Â
Your eyes shift from her face, her nose scrunching every so often, to the ebb and flow of her chest. She looks safe. Peaceful. And in that stillness, guilt floods you for wanting more.
But the thought returnâ heavier, more suffocating than before:
What about what you want?
Your phone buzzes faintly on your nightstand. Itâs Kotone, you know it. You donât even need to check.
You take a shaky breath, trying to calm the storm in your mind as you glance at Xinyu, still lost in sleep. You want to go. You want to stay. You weigh the choices, but both promise some level of anguishâ guilt or suffocation.
You love Xinyu. Youâve said it so many times, itâs an unconscious truth, a reflex.Â
But if the cost is youâ your voice, your space, your very selfâ is that still love?
You jolt in surprise as Xinyu nudges you, her blinking eyes looking at you expectantly. You must have woken her up while you were lost in thought, your own mind too loud for her quiet. Thereâs no point in figuring out how long sheâs been awake or looking at you. âDid you want breakfast?â you stammer in a hushed whisper.
She shrugs, âIf you want,â she says, reclaiming your chest as her pillow.
âArenât you a little hungry?â you ask, trying to bridge the void.Â
âOnly a little, but Iâm comfy like this,â she replies in a hoarse voice, sleep still clinging to her tone. You hum in response, already acknowledging that you wonât be eating until much later.
Not because you want to. But because itâs easier than watching her vanish behind that silence again.
âââ
You stare at your screen hoping it was a glitch. A behind-the-scenes error. A mistyped number. Anything but what it was.

Maybe Professor Parkâs TA entered it wrong. Confusing 6 for a 9. Simple mistake, right?. Your screen dimmedâ the auto-sleep. The universeâs way of cushioning the blow before it hits. You refresh the page, but nopeâ62%.Â
Just a room away, Xinyu humsâ off in her own worldâ stirring something in a pot. The scent of mushrooms, soy sauce, and spices you couldnât name based on the smell alone floats into the room. It should be comforting.
Instead, it makes your stomach turn.
You glance at the grade again. Yepâ still a 62. As if checking would somehow change it.
You stifle a chuckle. None of this is funny, but it feels inevitable. You tried--paid attention in class. Jotted down everything Park and her TA emphasized. The material was just dense. Thatâs why you and Kotone started studying together. Thatâs why you got solid marks before.Â
Maybe if youâd gone to the study session⊠but you stayed. With her. You convinced yourself it was your decision to stay. You chose her. But stillâ maybe if you went.
A beat passedâ long enough to feel the crushing weight of it all.
âEverything okay?â Xinyu calls from the kitchen, voice light, oblivious.
You tense up, âYeah⊠just got the results from Parkâs exam.â
âOh? Howâd you do?â she asked, a little too brightly. âYou did well before, right?â
You hesitate. Not wanting to break the calm with the reality of what youâre avoiding.
The letters scramble in your mind, syllables stuck in your throat. âGot a⊠uh⊠73,â you cough, clearing your throat, but it doesnât sound like the truth. âCouldâve been worse.âÂ
A beat of stillness passes, long enough that it feels like hours, making you wish youâd never answered.
âYouâre right, itâs not too bad,â Xinyu replied, voice thinner now, a trace of something unreadable behind it. âI know youâll do better next time.âÂ
You nodded, but the words cling to your skin. Only if it were that simple.
Xinyu walks into the room, holding two bowlsâ steam curling from each one. She hands you one with a gentle smile. Hot and sour soup. Of course. Your favorite.Â
She playfully nudges your shoulder, her voice light, âStill proud of you, you know,â her eyes smiling too, but you can see the edge in them.
You return it, your smile automatic. âThanks.âÂ
You take the bowl with both hands, grateful for something to steady them, but the warmth of the soup feels distant. The soup looks perfectâ ribbons of eggs swirled around, mushrooms cut just how you like them, the vinegar stinging your nose, but it does little to calm the tension inside you.
You stir it absently, watching the broth swirl.Â
âI think Iâll study with Kotone again tomorrow,â your tone kept deliberately casual, but thereâs a sharpness in your chest. âBefore the next exam.â
You donât look at her, but you hear it: the sharp clink of ceramic as her bowl meets the table a little too quickly. The air grew thick, heavy with unspoken words.
âOh,â she said. Just that. Her voice doesnât crack or falter. It just⊠dulls. A subtle dimming.
She sits across from you. And there it isâ silence, thick and unruly.
That jagged, restless shroud is back, crawling into the space between you. It dares you to speak, but you know nothing good would comeâ a wolf in sheepâs clothing.
She doesnât look up. Her lips are pressed tight, her eyes fixed on the steam rising from her soup. Her shoulders tense, just the slightest movementâ a warning you canât ignore.
It should have been a simple statement. Just a heads-up. Nothing more. But itâs never simple, not with Xinyu. The smallest things come loaded. Saying something even slightly off could trigger something youâd never see coming.
You watch her, spoon still circling your untouched bowl. You open your mouth to say something, anythingâ to explain, to smooth it over. But your voice is snagged in your throat, caught between guilt, frustration, and something darkerâ boiling inside of you.
You tell yourself it doesnât matter. Rounding a 62 to a 73 was just a white lieâ a little something to keep the peace. You didnât want to lie, but telling the truth felt like asking for permission.
You want to say more: that you needed the study group. That the content is getting harder. That you canât afford to fall behind. But the words twist in your chest, half-formed, impossible to release.
But you already know what silence feels like with her. How it can stretch for weeks, how it consumes your mind, how it makes you feel like you donât belong in your own bed.
Everyone is in hoodies and sweats, slouched in their seats. You glance at Kotone, who is sitting beside you, frantically scribbling notes. Her bun unraveling by the word. Nakyoung, across from Kotone, seems more focused on curating the perfect study playlist than studying itself. Jiyeon, who sits across from you, was locked inâ typing up a storm, whiteboarding, and reviewing videos. But youâ youâre hoping the knowledge would enter your brain through osmosis, because at this point, youâre barely keeping your eyes openâ let alone processing anything.
You skim the slides and texts, but nothing sticks. Nerve pathways mesh, names and connections knot together. What innervates what, where impulses travelâ it all slid through like sand through a sieve.
Your mind drifts from anatomy to the messages you hadnât opened. Four from Xinyuâ two sent over an hour ago.
You didnât have to read the messages to know: she wanted you home. Her words were always wrapped in a veil of neediness, soft but insistent. Youâd only been here two hours, but the material already felt like gibberishâ a puzzle with missing pieces.
You want to go home. Be with Xinyu. Ease the tension.
But you need to save your grade and this is one of the last chances to pull everything together before it all comes crashing down. Opening her messages would ruin your focusâ pull you into guilt and worry. You can already picture them: clipped lines, halfway between guilt and affection.
You sink in a spiraling dread until Kotone pulls you out, calling your name.
âHey,â she whispersâ soft but directâ cutting through the fog. âYou doing alright? Youâve been staring at that thing too long.â She nods toward the confusing diagram of the solar plexus, gaze soft but knowing.
You blink, caught between Xinyuâs unread messages and Kotoneâs steady gaze.Â
âYeah...â you mutter, raking your hand through your hair. âI just canât figure out which branch goes where.â A hollow excuse, but easier than the truth.
Kotone nods, not pressing. Her eyes flick toward your hand, still guarding your phone. Her expression softens, and she gives you a lookâ quiet, knowing, one that speaks volumes about what you havenât said.
âTrouble with the solar plexus?â Jiyeon asks from across the table, pep in her voice.
You nod lightly after a beat, your voice sheepish. âAll the branches keep blurring together.â
Jiyeonâs smile softens as she leans back, letting out a knowing sigh. âI get youâ I didnât get it at first either.â She slides a napkin between you two and begins sketching a network of lines. âI like to think of it as a tree,â Jiyeon says with a smile, voice easy and confident. âEverything starts from the celiac trunkâŠâÂ
She keeps talking, but her enthusiastic words fade into the background like a distant hum. The diagram swells with labels; branches overlapping, connections tangling. âDid you get that?â Jiyeonâs voice cutting through the noise.
You blink hard, forcing focus, before meeting Jiyeonâs expectant gaze. âIâd love to say yes⊠I liked how you explained it.â The words teetering between honesty and safety.
As Jiyeon prepares to launch into another explanationâ one that would have flown over your headâ your phone buzzes again. Your eyes dart toward your phone, your hand instinctively tightening your grip around itâ a practiced subtlety.Â
Maybe Jiyeon or Kotone notice:â youâre not sureâ but Nakyoung speaks first. âCan we take a break?â she groans, head in her hands. âWhatever Jiyeon just said killed my motivation.â She sinks lower in her chair.
Jiyeon pouts.Â
Cute
âIâm down for a break,â Kotone sighs, stretching. âAny more studying and I think Iâll end up like Naky.â
Nakyoung huffs, amused and exasperated. âYouâre already halfway there, Tone~.â
You and Jiyeon laugh beneath your breath.
âYou guys can take a break⊠Iâll keep studying,â Jiyeon says, flipping to a fresh page.
Nakyoung shoves her shoulder. âCool off. Weâve been going for, like, four hours.â
âTwo,â you correct. âBut my brainâs leaking out my ears and nose, so yeahâ break time.â You close your laptop; Kotone and Nakyoung follow suit.
The others turn to their phones. You fidget with your sleeves, watching rain streak down the window as if it might tell you something.
Your phone buzzes again. You keep your eyes on the rain, tracing its erratic pathsâ anything to avoid Xinyuâs messages. Even studying sounded better.
Kotone nudges your leg, nodding at your phone.
You donât want to answer Xinyu. But if Kotoneâs checking in⊠youâll look.

Relief and guilt hit at once. Kotone always knows when somethingâs up with you and Xinyu. You consider brushing it off, but sheâd get it out of you eventually.
You

You
i guess
alive, just tired
barely talked last night or this morning
sheâs been texting me though
Your mind drifts to last night, after you told her youâd be studying. You tried to say something, but she left before you could finish. Locked herself in your room. You could hear the videos she was watching through your doorâ proof she was awake, just refusing to acknowledge you.
This morning, she stayed holed up. Door locked. Quiet. You knew she was awake from the message on your phone: have fun. The curt reply sent doubt through you.
Tone~ đ¶
whatâs she been saying?
You
the usual prob
trying not to look
Tone~ đ¶
fair, donât take it to heart
you didnât do anything wrong
You
she thinks i did
Tone~ đ¶
well sheâs wrong
nothing wrong with you studying
especially after last exam
want me to talk to her?
Your chest tightens. You hate to admit it, but Kotoneâs right. Some part of you knows this isnât okayâ but itâs the smaller part, drowned by all of your faulty rationalizations.
You
itâs fine
thatâs just how she is
iâll just smooth it over
take her somewhere nice
Tone~ đ¶
idk how you put up with that
well iâm always here if you need to talk alright
You
you were the one that introduced me to her đ
thanks Tone
You feel a little lighter, though still weighed down by Xinyuâ and the mountain of content you havenât touched. Thanks to Kotone, youâre finally bring yourself to check Xinyuâs messages.

Frustration wells inside of you. Why care now? Why does it matter who youâre with? Youâre studyingâ thatâs all that fucking matters.
Your eyes narrow, rereading Xinyuâs messagesâ maybe the tone of the texts will magically change. You read between each text in the notification preview, itâs still the same: Clingy, accusatory, and controlling.Â
Your finger hovers over the texts. You could reply, smooth it over. But fuck, a resentment you never realized was boiling inside of you.Â
Your breath quickens, heat rising in your face. Streams of texts, fueled by years of pent up enmity, flashes through your mindâ your truth. You imagine firing backâ confessing the truth of her subtle manipulations, how much youâve had to sacrifice for her sake, how fed up you are with her bullshit, and tell her about everything youâve buried.Â
Like that night she sat in the dark, waiting for you after a group project.
Her words were a searing blow to your mental. âYou forgot me,â she had said, sadness dripping from her voice.
You hadnât. You texted her updates. Told her when youâd get home. That youâd be late. You even offered to step out of the group for a moment to call her.
When she said those three words, you were livid. But the way she said it, so softly, so sadly, you believed you did forget her. Then, she smiled. The kind of smile that makes you feel like youâve already lostâ even though you did nothing wrong. You spent days making it up to her, but she never let you forget.
You think about how often thatâs happened. The soft hurt in her voice. The subtle rewrites in your memory. The way she makes you question your own intentionsâ had you forgotten her? Had you been selfish? You never really knew.
You still donât.
You exhale, jaw aching from how hard youâd clenched it. The edge of your anger dulls into something else. Something heavier.
You donât know when it happened, but your phone died.Â
At first, you stare at the black screen, thumb hovering like it still expects to scroll.
But the calm doesnât last long. Your mind catches up.Â
Sheâs going to think Iâm ignoring her
That I did this on purposeÂ
Sheâs probably already upsetâ thinking I chose studying over her
You wait for the panicâ that familiar ache in your chest. It never comes. And maybe, for once, thatâs okay.
You tuck your phone in your bag and for a while you pretend to study. Underlining a phrase youâve read over 12 times by now. It still hasnât stuck.Â
âââ
Hours pass. The sun is about to fall below the horizon, illuminating the clouds in a dusky orange. Itâs still raining. More of a drizzle now, but stillâ itâs raining.
As always, Nakyoung is the first to speak, âCall it here?âÂ
Kotone stretches her arms above her head, letting out a soft groan that draws a half-smile from Jiyeon. âI think my brain is officially fried,â Kotone says, her voice light but exhaustion evident.Â
Jiyeon closes her notebook with more caution than necessary. âWe did good today,â she murmurs.
You nod, though your eyes wander toward the window. You trace the streaks of the drizzle that blurs the headlights of cars passing by. You imagine yourself out thereâ walking, basking in the rain, moisture clinging to your hair and clothes.Â
Nakyoung is already packing her things, efficient as ever. âBefore it gets dark, yeah?â she suggests, but waits for the others to move first.
Neither Kotone or Jiyeon get up. An awkward pause persists. Thereâs comfort in this pause. A fleeting pocket of normalcy you didnât realize you were craving.Â
Kotone leans toward you, her shoulder brushing against yours. âGlad you found your focus,â she comments warmly. âThink youâre cooked?âÂ
âMe too.â you reply. âHopefully not. Everything started to kinda make sense toward the end.â You turn toward Jiyeon, âThanks by the way, for explaining everything.â
Your comment elicits a gummy smile from Jiyeon. She ducks her head, almost embarrassed, and busies herself tucking stray stationary back into her case.
Kotone lets out a breathy laugh, her voice carrying a cadence that makes everything sound lighter. âHonestly, Iâd be lost without Jiyeon too.â
âSame,â Nakyoung chimes in, slinging her bag over her shoulder. âButâ I didnât say that.âÂ
That earns a ripple of laughterâ delicate, tired, but real. The kind of laughter that feels unforced, like a stitch pulling something frayed back together, even if it's just for a moment. You savor it.
âBus stop?â Jiyeon finally suggests breaking the lull.
The group stirs, Kotone and Nakyoung slide out from the booth. You and Jiyeon follow in tow.Â
Nakyoung and Jiyeon head toward the door while you and Kotone trail behind them, several paces behind. âIâm glad you made it. Seems like you needed this.â
âââ
The lock clicks, and youâre inside.
The air inside is thick, heavyâ like the drizzle still clinging to your clothes from the sandwich store. You close the door behind you as you step in, the petrichor from the outside still fresh on your nose.Â
Xinyuâs voice cuts through the darkness. âWhere were you?â
You hold up the paper bag. âI was getting some food for us,â you say quietly, setting it on the counter.âFrom that sandwich place you like.â Even as you speak, it feels performative something youâre supposed to do.
She doesnât pay any mind to it. âI didnât ask what you brought. I asked where you were.âÂ
Xinyuâs eyes narrow, staring daggers into you. âThen why didnât you answer me? Do you know how many times I called? Texted?â
You inhale slowly, bracing for the words to collapse as they leave your mouth. âMy phone died,â is all youâre able to muster.Â
It's the truth.
Silence hangs. Then she lets out a dry laugh. âConvenient. So convenient.â Xinyu scoffs again, sharper this time. âYou expect me to believe that your phone was dead⊠all afternoon?â
âItâs the truth,â you blurt out with more of an edge than intended. âIt just happened⊠Iâm sorry.âÂ
You feel yourself crumble under her gaze. The stillness itself accusing you. Sheâs studying youâ parsing every word, deciphering the meaning only she could find, and how to weaponize it.
âSoâ youâre telling me that your phone dies. And you didnât think to charge it?âÂ
You delay your response, lips parting but no words come out. Your answer doesnât matter, itâs just fuel to the fire.
Her eyes glint in the faint glow of her phone, tilting her head. âWhat kind of person just lets their phone die?â she presses. âItâs not hard, plug it in. Text me back. Keep me from worrying.â
That last word doesnât land right. Its meaning warped, twisted to fit her definition.
âI didnât have my charger,â you admit reluctantly. You set your belongings on one of your chairs. âI wasnât trying to ignore you.â
The couch cushions rustle as Xinyu leans back, her eyes leaving you briefly to check her phone. She lets the silence drag again, suffocating. You wish she would yellâ at least then you'd have a reason to retaliate.
âAnd Kotone, Jiyeon, and NakyoungâŠâ she spits their names like curses, clicking her tongue after each one. âI bet they kept you busy enough to forget I existed.â
A heat rises in your face. The room muffles around you, sound dampening, blurring around the edges.
Xinyu says more, her tone sharp, but the words bleed togetherâ static, unintelligible noise that refuses to resolve into meaning. You catch fragments, parts of syllables that dissolve before you comprehend them.
You try to listen, but your ears ring. Your throat tightens, then relaxes. Somehow words leave your mouthâ meaning lost on you. The words donât feel like yours.
Whatever you said, itâs enough. Through the blur you watch Xinyu lean back, her expression softening.Â
The pattern repeats: Xinyu speaks, her words dissolve into noise, a voice that isnât yours replies, and Xinyu likes it.
Amidst your muddled mind, one thought surfaces: This isnât fair.Â
None of this is fair. These one-sided âcompromises.â How Xinyu comes first. Fair would be a simple conversation: you go out to study, nothing more. No push back. Never this.
A crippling cloud of silence looms over you two, deliberate and thick. Xinyu sets her phone down on the couch beside her. AÂ click.Â
The lamp in the corner floods the room with dusky orangeâ false sunlight, like the after-storm glow you want to believe in.Â
The silence stretches, stranding you with your thoughts on a sinking ship. You imagine yourself out there: soaked in rain, walking, following the streetlights. The thought soothes youâ for a moment
Xinyu shifts in the couchâ her posture straightening slightly, brushing hair from her face. Her eyes meet yours. âI missed you~â she coos with a saccharine smile.
The sharpness recedes as if it never existed. She pats the cushion beside her, âCome here, you had a long day.âÂ
Your body doesnât move at first, still wandering through fictional downpours. The paper bag still sits on the counter, the scent of fresh bread and vinegar somehow sharper in the orange light. You think about leaving it there. Leaving this.Â
âDonât be difficult,â she teases. âI just missed you, thatâs all,â as if thatâs a good enough excuse.
Xinyu extends her hand toward you, and for a moment the dusky light lands just right, the softness of her features catching you off guard. Sheâs ethereal, otherworldlyâ a world you donât belong in. Youâre supposed to perform: Admire, submit, forgive.
And so you do, just like all the times before.
You hate that you do.
You resign yourself to sink into the cushion beside Xinyu. Immediately, she rests her head on your shoulder, her fingers weaving with yours, like itâs meant to be there.Â
âI missed you too, baobei,â you reply, the words slitting your tongue on the way out..Â
âYou smell like rain,â she murmurs. Her breath brushing against your collarbone. âI like it on you.â
You can only hum in response.
Xinyu keeps talkingâ likely about her dayâ but the words skim past you.
Eventually, she lays her head on your lap, her breathing evening into sleep.
Your gaze roams around the room: tracing the ceiling, counting books, cataloguing anything to distract yourself from the crushing silence.
A clock ticks faintly from another room. The fridge continues to drone on. Rain taps on the window in uneven rhythms. Time continues as you remain rooted in place.
The orange lamplight stains everything in false warmth. The table frozen in time, a bowl of cold hot and sour soup left untouched. The paper bag leaking the sharp tang of vinegar.Â
Silence thickens all around it all, oppressive, and crushing. You take each breath with caution, weary that you might wake Xinyu up.Â
You sit there, drowning in silence, measuring your breaths, while the rest of the world whizzes by.Â
